    Radical thought here – does internet gossip run rife again?

    Does anyone know for certain that RAFM or IWM is not getting one? :confused:

    NAM was forced to issue its statement last October due to internet chatter, hence the careful wording, which still stands!

    Having briefly met her a couple of times when she was involved in setting up the Galleries of Justice in Nottingham (a very child friendly venue) and through AIMs (Association of Independent Museums); I would venture to suggest that her words were carefully considered and had a specific point to make!

    Children must be encouraged to use museums, but in the right way!

    Perhaps the sign-off on J Boyle’s posts covers it well – “There are two sides to every story. The truth is usually somewhere between the two”.

    Yes – that’s what everyone thinks at Newark!

    To reiterate another earlier post:

    “However a large ‘airliner style’ airframe has been on the museum acquisition target list for the last 15 years – on the basis of the museum purchasing the item and not taking another airframe on loan.

    There is also a growing sub-theme relating to reconnaissance at the museum and hence the interest in a Nimrod, which would fulfil two aims.”

    As the museum website is still down I’ll re-post the original (and still valid) statement that was issued last October.

    Nimrod R1

    Possible acquisition ……..

    Following reports on some web fora and various direct communications to the museum – the museum trustees would like to confirm that they are in negotiations over the possible acquisition of a Nimrod R1 airframe.

    The museum trustees made the following additional details available at 1430 hours on 28 October, 2009.

    “Newark Air Museum has been given to understand that a Nimrod R1 aircraft will be retired from operational service sometime before the end of this financial year and then potentially dismantled to be sold as scrap. Eager to see this historic and prestigious aircraft preserved instead, initial enquiries have already been made to the RAF into the possible acquisition of this aircraft for display in the Museum, once it has been officially deemed surplus to requirements. It is still too early for the MOD to make any commitment at this time and the exact cost has yet to be established, but we are confidently aspiring to purchase the complete aircraft sometime in 2010.” 😀

    How will the ones for Newark and Elvington be delivered? Are the existing runways suitable for landing a Nimrod?

    If acquired the plan would be for NAM’s to be delivered by road! 😀

    Update 26.03.10

    Sorry for the interruption to service on the museum’s website this is due to small technical hitch whilst transferring the site to a new server. Hopefully being resolved as this is typed!

    Following today’s flurry of Nimrod related news I can confirm that that NAM’s situation still hasn’t changed! 😉

    Tribute to the V-Force

    Earlier this year the museum contacted a variety of media outlets in our quest to contact former V-Force personnel from across the UK to participate in a reunion event that is taking place at Newark Air Museum on Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th April 2010. This campaign has proved to be a great success in many parts of the UK, except that areas closest to home – Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and South Yorks.

    So if you know anyone who was based at …

    RAF Scampton
    RAF Waddington
    RAF Wittering

    Newark’s got lots of airframes to ‘fuss over continuously’ but I’m not so certain about the scantily clad women!!

    The only time that happens is on the occasional ‘Photo Club’ or ‘Product Promotion’ closed door photography sessions – strange thing they don’t struggle for volunteers for any of those events!! 😀

    … The fantastic efforts by the folks at Newark and the East Midlands Aero Park show what can be done with a good team but a large aircraft left outside is going to deteriorate unless fussed over continuously by loving carers….

    “Fussed over continuously!” – that sounds like an excellent motto or perhaps even a ‘mission statement’! 😀
