Enthusiast Tours
I’d agree entirely – I think there would be quite a lot of interest in an opportunity to look around such places without the non-aviation fraternity getting in the way, making a noise, and generally being annoying – that would be worth paying for! Problem is of course, you’d have to suffer the gaggles of anoraks instead… you can’t win!
I fondly remember the sheer pleasure of walking around Hendon one night, entirely on my own… you could hear a pin drop… bliss!:D
😀 I wish I could say this was just for you but I can’t; neither can I say there won’t be other people around as the museum is open as normal!
Perhaps if NAM gets the R1 that it’s hoping and planning for, you could discuss the finer points of Nimrod landing profiles with the museum’s resident ‘former R1 driver!’
I don’t and I flew them for 13 years. Cosford has a LDA of 1141m which is a tad short to say the least. However I assume that you have had the manuals out and done the landing performance calculations?
No it isn’t. The figures from the manuals have to comply with the landing performance criteria. It is an objective decision.

I understand that similar calculations were made and discussions held in relation to Winthorpe.
Observer Corps Aircraft Recognition Competition
Only ten days left to run with NAM’s Observer Corps Aircraft Recognition Competition – still a chance to win one of the monthly prizes, details available on the News Page of the museum website!
Strange kind of viewpoint – refuse a Nimrod so that they can concentrate on a Beaufighter? Brilliant if you have any interest in Beaufighters, absurd if you don’t!
  .. depends if you like Nimrods!
I’d like to see one at Newark. However, they hoped to have a Victor from Marham in the past (I used to work at the museum), but never got it.
Sorry Dave but the Victor’s a new one on me! I’ve been involved at NAM pretty much on a continuous basis since 1973 and that’s the first time I’ve heard it mentioned that they were seriously trying for a Victor!
There might have been some chatter amongst the volunteers but I don’t believe a formal approach has ever been made for one to the MoD.
However a large ‘airliner style’ airframe has been on the museum acquisition target list for the last 15 years – on the basis of the museum purchasing the item and not taking another airframe on loan. There is also a growing sub-theme relating to reconnaissance at the museum and hence the interest in a Nimrod, which would fulfil two aims.
As for demilitarisation, my understanding is that a lot of the process is rather one of deactivation and removal of any potentially hazardous materials, chemicals etc rather than not allowing them to ‘operate in anger’ again. My understanding is that any major scrapping scheme for most current types is potentially an expensive option due to the recycling regulations and targets e.g. this was a significant factor in the Viggen disposals.
Yes – the very same!! 😀
They own the Wheelgate Park at Farnsfield where XS919 is located; there’s a plastic Hurricane on display as well!
This site was originally called White Post Wonderland and its former owner generously donated steelwork that helped refurbish NAM’s Argosy Procedures Trainer building – the contents of which are now functioning well! 🙂
Newark Air Museum
😀 Likewise for Newark Air Museum:
24 April – Tribute to the V-Force event (Dakota)
19 June – Cockpit-Fest (Hurricane & Spitfire)
20 June – Cockpit-Fest (Spitfire)
The Lyneham Comet has been discussed before …..

RE: XM573 Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha Nebraska..
As others will no doubt say, the plane is now a few miles away at the Strategic Aerospace Museum (new name for the SAC museum) and it’s indoors
and appearently in fine shape.
😮 Four inside!! 😀
XM594 – Newark Air Museum
I’ll kick you off Peter.
As a quick update I’ll add something that was posted somewhere around here earlier in the year.
XM594 will be the centrepiece of Newark’s Tribute to the V-Force event on April 24 & 25, 2010, which looks set to attract a diverse array of V-Force displays and veterans.
This event may slightly delay the much discussed repaint of XM594, which is still at the planning stage. I does however seem likely that some sort of scaffolding platforms will be utilised for the repaint. Ground running of the Rover still does occasionally take place and the aircraft is on loan from the Lincolnshire’s Lancaster Association.
Since that post work has been started on cleaning the airframe in preparation for the April event.
The previously talked about plans for a third hangar at Newark to house XM594 and two other heavies have been delayed due to the need to address other issues to help with the long-term development of the museum’s Southfield Site.
I wish BBMF would put the display dates list up soon on the site.
Cockpit-Fest has a BBMF Spitfire flypast booking confirmed for June 20th! 😀
😮 I forgot XL318, which was taken in to Hendon by road!! 😮
Heretic hat still on!
At least there are two Vulcans displayed under cover in the UK!
Should the need arise it would also take a lot of money to move all their other aircraft and artefacts.
Heretic hat on and wishing everyone involved with the Carlisle Group good luck – IF any gossip about Carlisle has any substance why just all the fuss about the Vulcan (merely to prove a point in a web-forum ‘debate’), what about the other exhibits and everyone involved?
