To be fair most NATO nations aren’t operating F-16s with CFTs, which ofc. come with their own compromises.

The fate of the 18 crew doesn’t appear to have been confirmed as yet, however it is likely they are all dead. A tragedy for the Indian Navy and the families of the crew; RIP.

If there was a carrier race then India won it fifty years ago with INS Vikrant.
On the other hand, there is little doubt that China’s carrier future is at least as bright as India’s, and probably brighter. China counters India’s greater experience and access to foreign technologies with much greater resources and generally more coherent and efficient processes.
But of course it isn’t a race anyway, so… :rolleyes:
they should just mimic India and do Flankers and Rafales.. at least that way they can share some training and equipment with them too.

That was better reading than I expected, although the SSBN point applies more to the United States than United Kingdom, which lacks the overwhelming conventional capabilities to offset the loss of nuclear weapons. If there is any nation in the world that can afford to relinquish nuclear weapons, it’s the United States. Not that I would actually advocate this, but a considerable reduction from current forces, including the elimination of the land-based leg of the triad, sure.
Like much of Europe (and now the United States), the “choose capability over capacity” mantra has been swallowed hook, line and sinker in the UK. I think deeply engrained in the minds of defense planners in the UK (particularly naval force planners) is the sense that if they just keep the basic architecture of a great fleet together, someday fortunes will change and they can simply add capacity to a vital, balanced fleet architecture.

Mind you, Mr. McGrath is ignoring the political utility of such forces: they allow nations to play at being important (or simply relevant, as in the case of Australia) on issues verging from the trivial to the minor. But if push ever comes to shove, the whole thing will collapse like a pack of cards and politicians and citizens alike will face the rudest of awakenings.

In the field of History there is much controversy over many of the various conceptual schemes that are employed, perhaps most famously the division between Ancient/Medieval/Modern periods of history. And yet even staunch critics of a particular conceptual scheme will often make use of it because it is widely understood. This is basically how things stand with the concept of aircraft generations as well. The best reason to continue using the existing nomenclature is that everyone knows more or less what it means and which aircraft are being referred to and excluded. And yet one doesn’t have to give the system much thought to realise how full of holes it is — e.g. three French aircraft, each well advanced over its predecessor, corresponding to only two American generations. Of course it is not actually surprising that a system designed to capture US acquisition patterns struggles to integrate developments elsewhere.
The important thing is to remember what the generational nomenclature is — an abstraction designed as an aid to the understanding that originated in a particular context — and what it is not: a feature of reality. And in this context we can observe that one of the chief effects of the current generational nomenclature is indeed to minimise the advances of the Eurocanards over the teen series and Fulcrum/Flanker, and further to suggest an equivalence between the Eurocans and reheated older aircraft (F/A-18E/F, Su-35, etc.) that does not exist. The truth is that the Eurocans are as great an advance over 4th generation a/c as 4th gen was over 3rd. And a further truth is that even if the Americans decide to make an even larger version of the F/A-18 with pylons skewed even further from true, it will still be a child of the 1970s.
Incidentally, I’m curious as to which generation Gripen E/F is supposed to belong to, according to those who think Hornet and Super Hornet belong to different generations: Gripen E/F bears exactly the same relation to earlier Gripens as Super Hornet does to earlier Hornets. Indeed, given that Gripen E/F is receiving updated avionics from the outset, it would seem to be a somewhat greater advance over Gripen C/D than F/A-18E/F Block I was over F/A-18C/D.
Here you are wrong again. The F-15,16,18 and Super Hornet are all 4th generation aircraft, as are the Eurocanards, Mig-29, Su-27, etc.
That’s a nice simple narrative that, like most American narratives, bears no useful relation to reality. A more considered analysis based upon embodied design principles rather than US acquisition patterns would note at least three eras within the so-called ‘4th generation’, with F-14 and F-15 belonging to the first, F-16/-18/Fulcrum/Flanker belonging to the second, and Gripen/Rafale/Typhoon/J-10 belonging to the third. And of course KF-X as currently conceived would appear to belong to a fourth era within the so-called 4th generation — the same niche as MiG MFI would’ve occupied.
Super Hornet is a warmed over design from the 70s, as MiG-35 and Su-35 are, and as H-6K is a warmed over design from the 50s.
Fighters belonging to the generation after Viper/Hornet/Fulcrum/Flanker can all be distinguished by their delta-canard configuration: Gripen, Rafale, Typhoon, Lavi, J-10, MiG MFI — and the F-2 as the Japanese originally conceived it.

As you should well know by now the Super Hornet is a contemporary to the Rafale and Typhoon with its first flight in late 1995.

It is a threat. But not nearly as great a threat to Indian carriers working in the Indian Ocean as it is to US carriers attempting an incursion into the South China Sea.
Except that India doesn’t have anything like the strategic objectives of the United States which are threatened by anti-access tools such as DF-21D. If anything India vs. China is a reversal of China vs. US with India seeking the ability to control access to the Indian ocean vs. Chinese attempts to secure access.
