It would be a shame if the Yak 130 was discarded for political reasons considering the deal we have made with Russia for the Mistrals. We can’t sign juicy contracts with Russia when it benefits us and shun them when it doesn’t.

Maybe France (Eurocopter) should get on board with the joint Russian-Chinese heavy lift helicopter program…
But on the topic, the An-70s relative cheapness to the A-400M wouldn’t really solve the fundemental issue – the operational budget.
Which is why a smaller aircraft would be more practical…
That’s why if you re-read my post a little more carefully, you will see that bit where I said many people in SA would like the UN to go stuff themselves.
Why deploy when the government won’t budget for it? And they won’t for reasons given above.
It’s just dangerous for the troops involved, with such idiocy.
Govt gives worthwhile operational budget, go for it.
They don’t, stuff it.
I agree. One step forward would be to separate the budget for external operations from the defence budget.
They can afford to, just not on the current budget.
They spend well below the average global GDP on defence, about 1,2%, or only about half of the global average.
Unless the military is planning a coup then those are the resources they should be planning around. The military serves the nation, not the other way around. And besides, 1.2% is a perfectly sensible figure for a developing nation with minimal threats to its security.
The U.S. Army will never get the A-10’s. The USAF would retire them first before they allow that to happen.
It’s probably for the best. If the Army got A-10s they’d eventually want replacements and you’d wind up with another joint cluster**** where the Super Hornet/F-15E/F-22 successor is required to have rough field STOL capability and stand up to 20mm cannon fire. :p
Then perhaps they should be more realistic about what their requirements are in light of their resources, lest they wind up in the Argentinean situation of spiralling towards zero capability whilst dreaming of aircraft carriers.
You’ll forgive me if I’m sceptical of a nation that can’t afford to operate a squadron of Gripens weighing the pros and cons of A400M vs. C-17.
A-10s have to stay as long as possible and they should be transferred to Army.
Sure; there you go — give them to the Army, they can make the necessary cuts to accommodate them. Everybody wins.
As the rumours regarding SAAF’s Gripens show, the acquisition cost is not the only problem. Perhaps they should be looking a step down at C-130J or perhaps KC-390 with their Brazilian friends.
The B-1Bs will eventually be replaced by LRS-B.
The A-10s will be replaced by nothing.
The A-10s should go.
Why not both PC-21 and M346?
Maybe talk to Germany and see if they’re interested in training their own pilots — joint M346 buy?
However, according to The Independent, PM Cameron has told Russia to join in or face isolation on Syria, despite sharing many common grounds.
Is Cameron really deluded enough to think that threatening Russia with ‘isolation’ is an effective strategy? It’s like he thinks he’s talking to Australia or some other follow-the-leader country.
The ‘astonishment’ is because the US has in recent years made a high-profile issue (in both public and diplomatic discourse) of Chinese espionage, painting America and American industry as victims of a deceitful, underhanded China. Intelligent folk have always known that this is just faux-outrage for the home crowd, that America hacks at least as much as it is hacked, but one can hardly blame China for pushing back on a subject that America has seen fit to drag into the open.
Incidentally, Foreign Policy magazine has a recent article on US cyber operations against China.
Maaarf considering that France itself did 2225 ground hits aka 35 % of the total, you are saying that RAF wasnt present? Noeither anyone else? Go to NATO site, more serious than a google sarch.
What? Nowhere did I suggest that only France and US were involved; I was merely comparing the spending of those two nations on the intervention. The article I linked has UK spending too, roughly the same level as France.
But this is getting off-topic. More interesting is rumour of Iran deploying 4000 Republican Guards to Syria!
Fell over themselves to get involved? How so? There was no major ramping up of forces from what I can recall. I think you’ll have to actually provide some evidence here. Either way America certainly weren’t leading anything in Libya, if anything they took a back seat!
Not sure why you need evidence when it is common knowledge that America did the heavy lifting in Libya, but a quick Google sez that the US out-spent France nearly 3:1. You are free to present evidence to the contrary.
Sorry to spoil it but the Libyian conflict ruined that theory a year or so ago but I guess one starts running out of valid material when every post simply must have a strong anti-US element to it.
Umm, Libya demonstrates the point. Once the French said they were going in the Americans fell over themselves to get involved. The same would happen if there was any hint of cooperative Arab/Turkic action on Syria.
