    Cheers guys

Mark, the restaurant is called the Crab & Anchor, it’s more like a pub but doesn’t cater for the drinkers etc, but it is a restaurant, the food is all home cooked and the menu is superb, not your average pub menu. You can find it if you make your way to the Ively roundabout by Farnborough Airport entrance, (the roundabout has the old jet on it), head north towards Reading and cross 2 roundabouts, then keep an out left and you’ll see Morrisions, and it’s at the back of there 😉 it’s about ¼ mile away from the airport.

Cheers for that, I know exactly where it is! I’ll try and check it out when I’m down at Christmas now I think 🙂

Great stuff Deano, thanks for taking the time and effort to write it all up!

Oh, and where on earth did you find a great restaurant in Farnborough? I’ve been looking for 20 years… :p

To be honest I’m glad they’re tendering bids like this.

No point paying XL more money if Omni can do it cheaper. We’re always the first to moan that money is being wasted. The more competition that can be injected into the public sector the better.

And off to General Discussion we go… 😉

The Sri Lankan will technically be at fault because it seemed to be the one taxiing at the time.

Nothing to do with ATC, they have long had a get out clause from holding point manouvering in the form of the ATIS message clearedtoland talks about.

The funniest quote by far in the BBC article was “thank god this happened on the ground and not in the air”!

“One could never imagine flying to europe in anything less than first. You must need a good wash afterwards! What twaddle not to use spiffing British Airways First Class. Rar Rar”

Aside from the fact Club is the highest class offered in Europe, the same IFE system sadly plays throughout the aircraft irrespective of class.

I have investigated what AVOD is. Am I getting one of these?. Sounds really exciting.

    No, you are not.

You are getting a small CRT monitor in the aisle that flickers on and off throughout the flight, accompanied by the worst analogue sound quality heard this side of the ’80s.

    Sorry. 🙁

The interior and IFE have recently been updated and there are a few teething troubles with the on demand T.V’s but the big tin bit that surround it Is fine!

LOL! AVOD to Athens. Not unless you are really really really lucky!

The interiors of the aircraft you will be flying have not been updated since purchase from the looks of things, and certainly not this millenium.

I’d wander around London for a few hours, grab some lunch, and then head down to LHR to hang out at Hatton Cross until it gets dark.

There aren’t any decent VIP Lounges you can pay into in T1 anyway, so don’t bother with that. If I were you (and had checked in online and had no bags to check) I’d try and get to the terminal no earlier than an hour before the flight, which should fit in nicely with you getting a 1930 bus or thereabouts back from Hatton Cross.

The BA 767s are in a bit of a state at the moment, the TV screens rarely work and half the interior is held together with gaffer tape. However the state of the interior and exterior are very different. Putting aside the

The UN doesn’t own any aircraft itself. Instead it charters aircraft based on specific needs for various fixed periods of time.

I’m not sure on the exact tender process, but it will be on the UN site somewhere!

There is no easy way of knowing how many or of what type are in use at any one time, in fact the UN themselves probably don’t even know. This is because the aircraft range from big fat IL76s that are operated by some of the bigger missions for years on end, scaling right down to a 5 day secondment of a Cessna Caravan in Ethiopia.

The UN are especially large users of Russian built aircraft (built like brick outhouses, so perfect for the type of work they are used for) but also other obvious types like Caravans and Dash 8/7/6s.

As for bases, again, take a quick look at where the UN are operating these days and you’ll have a good idea of where the aircraft are. East Timor, Congo, Sierra Leone etc.

I’m booked out to Milan for a weekend shortly after services commence. Got the tickets for about £30 each, out Friday night back Sunday night.

Bargain! May well pick up a couple of these £3.50 tickets now too!

Not a god day at T1 today.

First, major delays in the morning due to the awful fog in London this morning.

Now, what I believe is a power issue with some of the IT.

Alarmingly BAAs new owners seem to present no immediate prospect of a change of course and that ought to be a cause for concern for airlines and passengers alike.

Particularly as their UK Management Team are dropping like flys. At least before there was some attempt to manage the business side of things, now there doesn’t seem to be anyone managing the business or the operation. 🙁

For most of us, economy is the only option. I certainly have no problems travelling this way, as I am sure many others do not.

Sure, but that was one heck of a gruelling schedule, essentially living in an economy seat for 3 weeks!

You did all that in Y! 😮 Hope you got a decent amount of air miles to go somewhere next time in a bit more comfort!

Great report nevertheless, a part of the world I definitly need to haul myself over to a bit more. 🙂

Yes, but they had it painted in GSM livery in the full knowledge it wasn’t even going to do a GSM flight. So why bother, especially if we are to take the Air India example of a hybrid livery being applied ?

Space in the Paint Shop is booked some time in advance. The Air India deal was done very last minute (which is why GSM are getting paid a ****load of money for it) so I imagine the painting was arranged long before the AI contract.
