The He111 was successfully brought onto dry land about one hour ago with no apparent problems encountered during the process.

More recovery pics here – the He 111 arriving on the shore line and the lift beginning.

The original plan was to remove the wings prior to lifting but it would appear that permission to do this has not been approved because the lake is the drinking water supply for Trondheim and they are concerned about pollution. It is also reported that the paint, which looked in good condition when the a/c was first seen, is falling off now that it is above the water.

One engine is still on the bottom of the lake and the plan is to recover it. The other engine was removed by the Germans before the a/c sank.

    Hi Setter,

I don’t know if the exact plan for what is to happen to these aircraft is actually known for sure yet. It still seems there are several different opinions and various options.

What I have been led to understand regarding how they came to sink in the first place is that they were damaged a/c that were sitting on the ice and being used by the Germans for spare parts to keep some of their other machines flying. Therefore, some parts will most likely have been removed from them prior to them sinking when the ice melted. Therefore it is more than likely that they will not be complete a/c when they are recovered. We will just have to wait and see if this is indeed the case as the story continues to unfold.

It’s certainly all very interesting though.

Fantastic pictures on the link you posted Wingnut, great quality. Like you I have also heard that the Norwegians will get to pick parts that they require from the He111 to use for the one they already have at Gardermoen. The remains of the recovered He 111 will then go to Germany. As far as the Ju88 is concerned, it is said that Norway may be keeping the one that will be recovered and that they will give the one that was salvaged from the mountains at Namsos in the 80’s to the Germans. No doubt there will be other ideas about it all in the coming days.

The latest news I have re the recovery is that the Ju88 is still underwater. The He111 is now lying horizontally on the surface (although upside down) and was pulled to the shore this evening. I think the wings will be removed before they lift it out.

A few more bits and bobs……

I am told that the two aircraft were lost sometime between 16th and 18th April. They were sitting on the lake which was frozen at the time and were possibly damaged a/c being used for spare parts. It was common for frozen lakes to be used as landing strips etc in Norway during the war as much of the terrain there is mountainous so a frozen lake provided an ideal flat landing surface. In this case, when the thaw set in during April the aircraft went through the ice and sank to the bottom of the lake.

The pilot who watched his He 111 being recovered today was later shot down and spent the rest of the war as a POW.

Perfect sallyB, thanks for that – and your English is wonderful! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Well, it certainly seems that there is an ongoing debate as to where the a/c will end up.

    No images ??

    ?

Well done paulmcmillan. The paper hadn’t got those images up when I found the article, it was text only which is why I mentioned that in my posting. What an incredible experience it must have been for the pilot to watch his aircraft rise to the surface after all these years.

For anyone who can read Norwegian, there are two newspaper articles from yesterday and today which were published in a local Trondheim newspaper reporting on the two German aircraft. Text only, no images.

If anyone can read these can they give a brief run down of what is being reported for the benefit of those of us who can’t?! ๐Ÿ™‚

Do you know ho is doing the the recovery and for whom?

Any ideas of the final destination for these two?

The immediacy of you post, your name and location might suggest an RAF involvement?

    Mark

Sorry, I’m not RAF and as far as I’m aware they have no involvement in this operation. I’m getting news via contacts in Norway who have been to watch the recovery in progress.

The details I have at present are sketchy. The tail of the He111 broke the surface around lunchtime today. The German pilot witnessed the event from a small rowing boat.

As far as I’m led to believe the recovery is being financed by Germany so I suspect (although I don’t know) that the aircraft will be returned there.

If I learn any more I’ll post it here.

The stupidity of some airline passengers…

Incredible isn’t it? Some passengers even buy a ticket, check their luggage in and then expect both themselves and their luggage to be deposited at the same airport at the same time! How stupid can they be?! ๐Ÿ™‚

Have a look on your computer for a ‘Character Map’ – part of Windows. You might find some there, in which case make a note of the shortcut code for each letter. I have to write Norwegian names quite regularly and they have a few additional characters to the ones on our keyboards. For example ‘รฆ’ is made by holding the Alt key down and typing 0230 on the numerical keyboard. ‘ร˜’ is Alt + 0216, ‘รถ’ is Alt + 0246. Another slower method is to copy and paste characters from other posts that you are responding to!

One sh!t week, just refer to the Hysterical forum to see what news I got today.

To top that we had to have our poor old dog put to sleep last Saturday, 16 years we’d had her.

Already posted on Hysterical forum re the news you got today.

So, very, very sorry to hear the news about your dog. Had to do same thing three weeks ago with our beloved family dog who was 13. Still gutted, we had him since he was 12 weeks old and he has left a gaping hole in our family.
