So, who made it and who managed to meet up? Sorry I missed the meet, wasn’t in the right place at the right time and then didn’t know who to look out for later! How was your day?
We had a great day out. Weather wasn’t special, but at least the rain held off. It was the first air show my children have attended and they loved it, so did the other half……huge relief since I dragged them all there kicking and screaming ๐
What a pity the BBMF didn’t put in an appearance, I was really looking forward to seeing them.
Full marks to the organisers for their traffic management and marshalling in car parks etc. Worked a dream for us with minimum hold ups and only the expected amount of slow traffic inbound and outbound for a short period of time.
Ticket price for a family of 4 (could have taken an extra child for same price), purchased in advance was ยฃ30 which I would say was excellent value.
PS: Anyone manage to get any decent photo’s they can post? Have decided taking photo’s at air shows is not my forte ๐ฎ
Either going to Leuchars, a wedding reception, meeting my new niece (baby Hannah born this morning) or a birthday party with an attractive blonde female friend.
Heck, I’ll do ’em all !!!! ๐
Ren Frew, you’re an absolute natural ๐ you’ve got the hang of this weekend m’larky sussed nae bother ๐ Enjoy…………….. btw, there is one at the end of every week ๐
PS: congratulations on the new niece.
Start off by enjoying yourself at Leuchars tomorrow, I intend to ๐
Will be away on business for a couple of days and won’t be able to get to a pc to find out what is going on.
First pictures of the Ju88 on the surface are linked from this page with a note that more will be added as things progress http://home.no.net/jornaasl/jonsvatnet/ so it’s probably a good place to watch out. Also try http://f16.parsimony.net/forum28300/index.htm for news, they seem to be keeping a close eye on things.
I don’t remember where but I recall reading that both of these aircraft had their tail surfaces removed by the Germans before they sank. Can anyone confirm?
Quite possibly Chad, if you follow some of the links in the postings above you will see photos of the He 111 and what it looked like as it came out of the lake. I haven’t seen any photos of the Ju88 as yet.
Ju 88 now reported as being on the surface
Hi
Pardon the impatience but any news of the Ju88 yet
Kindest regards
John Parker
Hello yes, sorry, been out working at a motorbike convention all day! Right, word is that the Ju 88 is strapped and ready to lift, they hope to have it on the surface by this evening.
The He111 is almost ready for transportation to Germany having been partially dismantled. You can see some photographs of that which were taken today if you look here http://f16.parsimony.net/forum28300/index.htm and read the posts made by Morten Moe.
Surrounded by all these fancy characters no wonder I hide myself away in a dark castle. I am the only, lonely,………. Shrek ๐
Ah, you obviously haven’t seen Shrek II yet…………..won’t spoil the ending for you, but you’re no longer the only, lonely….. ๐
Thanks for posting the photos Clive and for spreading the word about this memorial. Many thanks and congratulations to the people who were responsible for organising it.
Some additional information from W R Chorley’s Bomber Command Losses 1942
Took off 2303 from Topcliffe on op to Saarbrรผcken. While crossing at 2344, the port outer engine caught fire and although the blaze was quelled, structural failure of the port wing followed and the order to bale out was given. At least two airmen fell into the sea and drowned, while the Halifax crashed 2358 at Chapel St. Leonards.

Well I am sorry I confused you !!!
No worries, that’s easy enough to do ๐
A couple of friends of mine are down at the lake this weekend so hopefully they will be able see what is being pulled out aside from the two aircraft. Might not get an update from them until early next week but will post anything of interest I learn.
Do you have a schedule of where you will be and when during your visit yet?
The Leuchars Airshow is on Saturday 11th http://www.airshow.co.uk/
Blimey John, I had to get the dictionary out to understand your posting!!! I have now educated myself as to what an empennage is ๐ and I don’t know if it was recovered or not. As far as I’m aware, both these aircraft were damaged and being used by the Germans for spares before they sank, so they surely will have bits that just aren’t there. The He 111 only has one engine apparently because the other was taken off before it sank. They are talking about recovering the engine.
Gee whillackers, too many Spidermans for comfort on this forum, particularly when one is an arachnaphobe ๐ฎ
A fabulous pic of the lift here http://home.no.net/kjellsor/jonsvatnet.html and a great close up of the viking logo painted on the a/c.
If you want to see some of the many other WW2 a/c wrecks that are scattered around in Norway then visit Kjells website which has some really excellent photographs http://home.no.net/kjellsor/
Now that the He111 is on dry land it is anticipated that the team will start to dismantle it. Recovery of the Ju 88 is next on the agenda but it may be Sunday before that starts. Will keep you posted.
Yip, I am ๐
