An irritating Ebay seller. He/she said that there would be no B-I-N price, and that the auction would run naturally. So I’m the high bidder with less than 48 hours to go, and he/she pulls the auction, stating that someone had bought it using B-I-N (which he/she said wouldn’t be an option). Grrrrrr.:mad::mad:
I’m not bidding on anything they have for sale ever again.
Suggest you report the seller to Ebay as I’m sure that is a breach of their selling rules, particularly if the auction was not a BIN and the auction had already attracted bids.
Whilst in Stavanger we visited the Eiganes Cemetery and the graves of the airmen and Paratroopers killed in Operation Freshman – a failed attempt to disrupt the German Heavy Water production facility. I’m not sure if much remains of the Halifax and gliders.
We visited these sites in February 2006 and there wasn’t a great deal remaining although enough to allow the sites to be identified. There is a plaque at the Horsa site and an information board marking the spot where the Halifax crew were originally buried at the other site. There was snow on the ground at the time which made finding wreckage a bit trickier than normal.

Hi Sven, If you use the map link on the Flyvrak site you can see where some crash sites are in the Bergen area – clicking on them takes you to the relevant page.
Some of the sites are easy to reach while others require many hours walking/biking and sometimes even use of a canoe to get in to them.
The majority of the wrecks on the Flyvrack site are concentrated from Mid Norway northwards with fewer in the south.
Hope that helps
What is the story behind this fascinating picture?
Jon
The story starts in 1942 Jon and an outline can be found here with links to information about the recovery of the aircraft etc http://www.archieraf.co.uk/archie/1048tls.html

An outstanding achievement Kev and one you should rightly be proud of. Congratulations and thank you for sharing your journey with the unfolding research on here.
I visited the crash site in 2006. Photograph of lake and memorial can be found here as well as some wreckage. http://ktsorens.tihlde.org/flyvrak/samsjoen.html
For my money we institute a programme to convert one of the outer Scottish islands as a penal colony – provision of the bare minimum of necessities only. Basic shelter, potable water supply, basic food provisions or facilities for the inhabitants to grow their own. If these creatures, child murderers and those of that level of crime against society, wish to exist outside of societies rules they can go and live without societies benefits…no medical care, no electricity, no fast food. If they cant hack that they are free to die of exposure or drowning at their convenience.
Err no thanks Jonesy, you can keep your flotsam and jetsam and leave the beautiful islands as they are for good folk to enjoy!

Nothing scientific from me to back things up I’m afraid, however, over the past ten years chatting to veteran Bomber Command aircrew I have been told quite a few times that it was easier to get out of a Halifax in a hurry than a Lancaster. Something about the amount of space inside and the positions of the escape hatches.
I’m sure others will have more to say on the matter.
Interesting question though so will enjoy reading the replies.

Well done for finding that Paul, I wasn’t able to locate it despite several search attempts as I was sure it would be there! The thread is a couple of years old though so new info may have filled the gap/new members on the forum etc so it’s still worth asking again.

You could try asking over on RAF Commands forum http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=1
There is a chap, Henk Welting, on there compiling data on all RAF losses so far unaccountable so he might have it in his data base.

Thanks GA, I’m able to see it again. It vanished for me earlier with a 404 not found error. I hadn’t been on for a while so wondered if it had gone away.

Anyone know where PPRune has vanished to? I can’t find it anymore.
Thanks
