I spotted this thread dead on 6pm, & turned the TV to BBC 2. The valuation is at the Corn Exchange in Bedford, but the bit in the middle where they visit a local antique related place may be the Shuttleworth visit.

Last take-off’ by Colin Cummings has the following.
14-Aug-52 WK657 Meteor F.8 92 Sqn Near RAF Coningsby
The pilot was practicing aerobatics culminating in a bunt to the inverted straight and level. He rolled out of the bunt before it was complete and began to lose height before striking the ground, killing some cattle, and then disintegrating against a river bank.
Sqn Ldr Jack Jagger 30
It would probably be worth ordering a copy of the AM1180 Accident Record Card for this incident from the RAF Museum at Hendon, as this may have information not included in the above re the cause of the accident. It will have other details such as no of hours flown on type etc. by Sqn/Ldr Jagger.
I’d also take a look at the 92 Sqn Operations Record Book at The National Archive, and also the ORBs for Linton-on-Ouse and also for Coningsby, for further information.

Guys,
Perhaps I can mention here the signing event at The Shoreham Aircraft Museum this Sunday (15th May) when we will have ten Battle of Britain veterans signing, with ALL money raised going to The Battle of Britain London Monument.
For details of the event see our website, or my separate thread on the signing, which reminds me it’s due a bump.
At last years events, plenty of people took the chance to shake the veterans by the hand and thank them for what they did, and of course we are very grateful that the veterans concerned accepted our invitation to be part of our fundraising efforts for the monument. To be in their company is a pleasure and an honour.
Geoff.
Just a little reminder to give you a chance to keep next Sunday (15th May) clear, or to start buttering up your other half 😀
By the way, our museum is open both tomorrow AND Sunday this weekend, as the village is having a VE Day event.
Geoff.
Roger,
You can display the newest post first by clicking on User CP (on blue bar at top of page, under thread title) and then on Edit opitions on left hand side of screen under Control panel. Scroll down to Thread display options and you will see a box called Thread display mode. Use the drop down list and click on Linear – newest first.
Hope this helps.

A few more from ’88
Why is it going on show there? They already have one Spitfire – Mk1 P9444.
Daz,
There’s going to be a special ‘Spitfire’ exhibition there from August which is due to run for eighteen months. Apparently the Spitfire will be displayed in ‘component form’ so you can see the interior construction.
Some of our museum’s Spitfire related exhibits will be part of this exhibition, which should be good publicity for us.

Fighter Meet ’87 part two.
Hover your cursor over the images for the aircraft ID (same with above post). Can anyone confirm the IDs for the GR3s & the Jag?
Geoff.
A selection of images from Fighter Meet ’87.
I’d be interested to know where the JPs, Gr3s, Phantom, and Jetstream are now.
I have loads more Fighter Meets images from the eighties, from which I will post a selection over the next few days – if you’d like to see them?
Geoff.
Blimey! I’d forgotten all about this thread.
Walter, many thanks for responding to the thread. Anything you have to say about this incident will be most welcome.
Do you ever get down to Duxford to see ‘your’ Lightning? I’m sure you would be most welcome at one of our occaisional forum meets, especially if it was at Duxford. Now wouldn’t that make a great group photo in front of XM135.
Geoff.
Keith,
‘The Blitz, then & now’ has ‘believed shot down by another aircraft of NJG2 during a night intruder sortie.’ It also mentions parts are held by the Humberside Aviation Society, who might be worth trying.
A book that might help you is ‘Intruders over Britain, the Luftwaffe’s nightfighter offensive over Britain 1940 – 1945’ by Simon Parry. Maybe someone on here has a copy they could check, or try Googling to find a copy.
I would also try posting this question over on ’12 O’clock high’ at http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/forumdisplay.php?f=8 as both Simon and Peter Cornwell, who did the losses for ‘The Blitz, then & now’ can be found there.
Geoff.
Cheers Colin.
I didn’t quite make it in 30 seconds though!
Geoff.
Colin,
I think this must be Spitfire N3068 of No 72 Sqn, flown by F/O Paul Davies-Cooke, which was shot down by a Bf109 over Sevenoaks at 9.40am on the 27th September 1940. It crashed into Nos 70 & 72 Queensway, West Wickham, Bromley. F/O Davies-Cooke baled out, but fell dead near Hayes Station. The only civilian casualty was Mrs Carpenter, from No 66 ‘injured in the shelter’, presumably belonging to either No 70 or 72.
‘The Battle of Britain, Then & Now Mk V’ has photos of the crash site on P797.
Geoff.
Ian,
According to ‘SAW 3’ MacDonnell baled out half way across the Channel.
P7784 was lost 9.4.41, at least acording to Air-Britain.
Geoff
Snaps – fancy meeting up somewhere at DX tomorrow, plus anyone else who will be there?
