Although we had Me-163s in 1944 too.
The Dutch operated Me-163s in 1944? Never heard about that, was that some kind of german colaberator squadron?
You can also run a win98 partition along with XP. I couldnt live without my 98 partition as quite alot of my favorite games are pre XP.
and you can say, ‘the PRC is crazy to invade taiwan’ as many times as you like and it wouldnt convice anyone if you dont back it up with any sound arguments.
The only way PRC can take Taiwan it too nuke it. How many troops do you think it would take just to hold a beachhead? Id estimate about 50,000 and thats just if they can get them in with in few hours. Do you think that Chineese navy can land that many troops just against the Taiwaneese navy alone? Do you think that a landing force can even get within 20 miles of the Taiwaneese coast? Your the one who is going to have to do some convincing.
Plawolf- If you had continued with the basic idea that China is only worried about its security in the region and didnt want Taiwan becoming a base for foriegn powers, I could accept that. But in the past youve tipped your hand by saying alot of stuff about how China should control Taiwan. But lets forget that and address what youre saying now:
“i have no problem accepting that taiwan is a de facto independent nation nor have i ever disputed it. even china accepts that, albert unofficially, as can be seen from the recent press releases stating that china was willing to allow taiwan ti have its own international living space. what i dispute is the belief that some here have that china will just stand by and let taiwan become a fully independent state.
currently, while taiwan is a de facto independent state, its government only have power to affect internal policies. once taiwan gains formal independence, it will be able to affect international policy, and that is what china cannot and will not accept.”
This is reasonable and I think something can be worked out if all thats at stake is regional security. You keep saying that its Taiwan thats at fault by wanting to declare independence and its not about reunification. Taiwan is clearly afraid of China and that is the sole purpose of its military. For you to try to throw the blame on Taiwan trying to become some kind of undermining mini power in the region just isnt going to work. Noone really cares if Taiwan calls themselves independent, their economy funtions just fine as though they were a independent nation. But for you to insist that “if Taiwan merely says the word independence, we will be at war with them” as some kind of face saving show of strength. Well the world looks apon Taiwan as a good citizen and neighbor. The fact that the Chineese say they are the same people ethnically does not justify that type of hostilitys. The whole world went to fight for one tiny nation of Kuwait to keep stability in that region, they could do the same in the far east. Were not living in the 1940s anymore, these are the rules the world plays by now. So if you think what Im saying is saber rattleing, there will be plenty of nations willing to watch you blink. And even though the world is heavily invested in China, the fact is China is replaceable. Chinas economy is still dependant on doing labor for foriegn companys, and has very little industry on which to stand on its own (Im sure that will change in the future though).
Plawolf- I really dont like coming off as a defender of US foriegn policy in past or present. Although there is some benefit to a US style world market place, Id say for the most part that the poor of this world are not benefiting and will stay poor. I aplaud Argentina for their socialist solutions to their economic problems, and their ability to stand up and say no to the world bank vultures. I personally have been screwed by the US and I encourage anyone who can offer an alternative to the F-18 hamburger type of over respect the US recieves. But to call a bafoon like Castro a cunning fox, well he is sort of a folk hero now, kind of like rich white kids who like wearing Che tee shirts. He has done nothing for his impoverished country, and I feel sorry for anyone who idolizes this feeble big mouth. And as for Castro using the “loaded gun” tactic, well he certainly would have, tyrants thoughout history have been willing to bring down the house as long as they could take their enemys with them. You had to have been there in that time, communist rhetoric is just a faint echo of what it once was.
As for the Taiwan issure, your attitude toward Taiwan comes off as alot of Maoist nationalism, and that just isnt going to fly in todays international politics. Like you say, noone wants war, things are moving along fine as they are. So threats only recieve yawns.
Plawolf- The USSR did not control Cuba. Castro was then and is now a hothead looking for any excuse possible to live up to his “imperialist smashing” ideals he trys to personify. It would have been possible for Castro to take the nukes by force, and noone in the US would put it past him. The USSR told the US in the UN that “we will bury you”, I dont think youre fully aware of the seriousness of the situation. China has nukes now, why dont you try stationing your nukes in underdeveloped allied nations and see what kind of reaction you get from the world.
Im not going to press the issue about Taiwans independence declarations because I think cool heads will prevail over this. But Taiwan is an independant nation and wont unify until treated as an equal.
Im having alot of trouble digging up old threads about Taiwan vs China with the new search utility despite its new advanced features, and even despite simply entering “china” or “taiwan” in the search box. But I know youve said the things Ive mentioned in the past.
“so, can you give some examples of my ‘crude remarks against Taiwan’? ”
“for example, when the USSR put a few SRBMs in cuba, they werent trying to do a first strike to wipe out the US and the US knew it (or at the every least the US president and his command staff knew it), they just wanted parity to counter the US SRBMs in turkey, yet the US was willing to put everything on the line to stop it. does that make sense based on you ‘logic’? “
“if taiwan declears independence, china will invade. pure and simple. if the US gets involved, china will fight the US, and there are no assurances that china will only fight with only conventional means.”
-Youve made countless remarks about how Taiwan is a “defeated people”, how they “have to be brought under control” ,about how they “have to pay for their crimes of the past”. That my not sound very crude to you, and I know your only trying to look out for “whats best for China”, but it comes off as very paranoid and backward to me and others here.
-The US wasnt worried about the USSR, it was worried about Castro. If the USSR had tried to give Khadafi nukes in Libya, the exact same thing would have happened.
-Taiwan is an independant nation, they have said so. Only the world wont accept it. And you say China will go to war, if the Taiwaneese president just utters the words “we are an indepenant nation”? I doubt it.
Well, imagine that – Beijing suddenly in favour of the democratic process!!! Does that include all ethnic Chinese worldwide, or just within the PRC and Taiwan?
Whatever the rhetoric from Beijing, they are de-facto two different countries with a shared language and culture but diametrically-opposed political systems.
IMHO, it is fear of the catastrophic loss of face that would result from failure, or even from costly victory, that holds the leadership of the PRC back from the highly risky step of invading Taiwan.
Couldnt have said it better myself. This post sums up the entire situation.
It seems like they’re not taking advantage of the huge canopy by sitting the pilots so low.
This “huge canopy” thing is going to far. First off the canopy is normal size and perportion, its the nose that is abnormally small and rear fuselage that is stubby that gives cockpit/canopy an oversized look. The pilots are not sitting low either unless you want their helmets touching the top of the canopy. Infact the rear pilot as excelent forward view, better than Ive seen on any other tandem trainer.
Both countries want to reunite but under a different regime.
No, definately not PRC policy on the situation. After hearing Plawolf and other mainland chineese members go off about how Taiwan is a renegade, breakaway province that has go come back under control of PRC, well it makes even less sense.
That senario just doesnt work. Russia is firmly footed on capitalism now, and capitalism isnt doing much for Africa. If this were to have taken place back in the 80s when communism was a uniting force, then that would be something to ponder. Most of the countrys in Africa were created by European colonialism and have little to do with native cultures of the peoples which is why I think its difficult for any of these countrys to form a stable political identity.
So since theyre building this jet trainer, does that mean they will no longer have a requirement to buy the Bae Hawk?
Excellent movie! Brad Pitt proved once again to be a great actor, capable of permorming all sorts of roles.
I cant understand why people say that about Brad Pitt, in all his past movies like River runs through it, Interview with a Vanpire and 7 deadly sins (or whatever its called) he just comes off as some kid trying to be grown up. So when I heard he was in this film along with Orlando Bloom who was very kid-like in Pirates of the Caribean, I thought for sure this movie was going to be total sap. This movie actually renewed confindence that Hollywood is still capable of making an epic picture (although it was directed by Wolfgang Peterson).
Id like to mention also that Greece was as a stark land back then as it is now, and the Greeks had to import alot of things like wood, grain, etc.
There is a British surf magazine, I dont remember the name of it. But this guy could be Austrialian and your son just thought he was British, in that case Australia has about 4 major surf mags and many more small ones as that is a major sport in oz.
hmmm, is there anyone here who sees this as kind of ironic? Flood annoyed by some kind of obsesive media barage? Dont like being indoctrinated on how to be a pussy wipped, insecure, conformist type??? 😉
