Which countries would be more likely to seel these weapons, France, the United States, Russia, China or Can I go shopping anywhere? As well, how many aircraft per squadron and if there a limit to the amount of money I could spend?

I guess the easiest way to put these arguments to rest would be to take a Rafale from the French Navy and a Typhoon from the RAF and pit them against one another under tight test parameters. Select pilots who are qualified to fly both (I realize there probably aren’t too many if any for that matter) and allow them to put these wonderful machines through the ringer.
On a serious note. There is no doubt in my mind that both aircraft can execute the missions to which they will be assigned with great ease. As far as the French are concerned, the Rafale is the best aircraft for their needs while the Eurofighter is the best tool for the needs of the RAF. In the end, during a conflict, it won’t be the numbers or how fast the aircraft can go when it carried such and such equipment but rather how well the pilots will be able to use the machines to the best of his abilities. Only the man behind the controls will make the difference.

This is great news for a program in its infancy. Congrats to Eurocopter for creating such a great helicopter.

I would just like to add this to my last post. You are right Bmused, this could come back and bite EADS in the rear end should the merger fail to generate the numbers mentioned by various financial news outlets. I guess time will tell if this will have been the right decision.

So let me get this right, you consider it fair to offer a cash incentive to an airline to order and stay exlusive to a particular manufacturer? As thats what you just said.

After all, this could only save thousands of jobs in the US

Yes, COULD. It is also possible this deal could worsen US Airway’s financial problems. Even with the collective cash injections, the US/HP merged airline will still have financial debts and this deal with airbus will sink them further into debt.

I don’t think EADS sees this US$250mil as a cash incentive but rather as an investment. And I think that it is only normal for US/HP to become an exclusive customer to Airbus otherwise the merger might not have become a reality and one of these two companies would have had very little chance of surviving. Of course another investor could have supplied US with the necessary funds to create this merger. However, I am sure that if Boeing had chosen to do something similar to what EADS did, then the US/HP fleet would have become an all Boeing fleet! Cheers!

Bmused, I would like you to explain how Airbus investing US$250mil in the US Airways and America West merger would is an unfair practise. I am sure that if Boeing was given the opportunity to the same, it might just do the same. As far as I see it, this is strictly an investment for EADS and if they should benefit by getting exclusive sales right with this airline, than why not! After all, this could only save thousands of jobs in the US. Conidering the state of American airlines in general, I am sure that no one will mind EADS doing what it is doing.

To bad the Indian Navy didn’t purchase the Rafale! The next question is will France ever find a export cusotmer for there canard fighter???

Singapor is carefully reviewing the offer made by Dassault for 20 Rafales and Saudi Arabia recently announced they werer thinking of contracting Dassault for 49 aircraft with forty more on options. I am sure that other countries are presently looking at the aircraft for future orders.

In this day and age, do we really need nuclear weapons? As SOC mentioned, if Iran had to give up their nuclear weapons than Israel should as well. I agree! But what about Pakistan and India? These two countries have activelly pursued nuclear programs and although many growled when they tested their first weapons in 1997, I believe it was, no one really began to threaten them with economic sanctions or show of force. In fact, every one is now rushing to Karashi and New Dheli to sell them more weapons they might one day need to do whatever, either fight each other or someone else in the region. In India’s case, they could end up in a large scale conflict with China. Could that ever happen, who knows but the possibility is still there.
But what about nations like France, England, the United States and Russia who all have sizeable nuclear arsenal? Why aren’t they disarming if they are alway telling the smaller nuclear powers to disarm? What gives them the right to keep their nuclear weapon?

The nest generation US CVN would be a good start. Apparently, if I remember correctly (I think I saw this on naval-technology.com) the rather large sail will be deleted from the design (Can’t remember where the bridge will be located). Then again, I saw this some time ago and the concept could have changed a million times by now! (Maybe I should quickly check my source for futher info!)

I was under the impression the Mirage 2000 that was shot down over Sarajavo was a Mirage 2000Nk. Could any one shed some light on this?

You can clearly see hinges along the top of the cargo hold which would point to this vehicle being a TEL. Would this mean the phased array radar it transports is retractable to ease the vehicle’s movements in the field? It is a very impressive beast to say the least!

I understand the French Navy pilots go through their flight training with the US Navy…….

I spoke with one a couple of years ago at the airshow hosted in London, southwestern Ontario. He seemed to enjoy his time in the US although this was still at a time when both the governments of France and the United States were still at each other’s throats over the Iraq issue. He said he had not suffered from any type of heckling from American aircrews in regards to this debacle.
At the time, the US Navy was still using the T-2 Buckeye and he was just about to move on to his next phase of training on the T-45. Once that part of his curriculum was to be completed, he was scheduled to return to France where, according to him, he was going to be funneled into the Rafale community. He had also mentioned that there was a French woman in his class and she was about to move on to her next phase of training as well. However, he failed to mention what type of jet she would be assigned to once her training would be complete.
In the mean time, I believe future French naval aviators will continue to go through their training in the United States for a long time to come.

OUTSTANDING pictures!!! Was wondering 2 things…..can the SuEs operate from US CVs ………and can the F-14 operate from CdG? Neat to think the F-18Es can fly from CdG….what sort of weapon load can they take off from her with?

I don’t believe the Super Etendards can operate from American aircraft carriers as they do not have the necessary compatible equipment to be launched from American catapults. As for the Tomcat, my reasoning remains the same, if they can recover a Hawkeye, CdG can recover and launch an F-14. Although, it seems we will never know!

If Ellsworth does close down once the review has been completed, where would it’s assigned Lancer’s be deployed from. Does Dyess have the infrastructure to support the entire B-1 fleet? Or is the Bone’s fleet about to take another massive cut to its strength?
