I didn’t know there was a Gauntlet flying anywhere. Lovely!

For the uneducated among us: what, apart from the firewall-forward, is “non-spec” about this restoration? I don’t know enough about the type to tell from the photos.

My vote is definitely for the TT.39. The “bull-nose” variants are nasty, but nothing quite ruins the Mossie’s lines like that!

To my understanding the FGR2 had to be sold after Mark died, the plans to Taxy her obviously came to naught

That I’m not so sure of…https://youtu.be/0on20KLGk4I

funny though that she was the only private operational F4 in the UK (albeit missing some boxes and bits) and possibly would still be if fate had not intervened.

I did always wonder though how they managed to buy a running F4 at a time that the RAF could not scrap them quick enough due to treaty obligations?

I can only think it was The Hanna Factor – Mark had served as a Phantom pilot which might have helped, and the OFMC was a considerable force at the time. I would love to know more about its acquisition, I read at the weekend she was flown directly into Duxford on retirement in November 1992.

It’s very sad to me – even as someone who’s never even seen a Phantom in the flesh! – that there’s not a taxiable example anywhere in the UK.

Back to the 2.111! Sorry, OP!

Very good news! I’m guessing the Reevers team has been in touch with Rob Greinert and the HARS team, and TFC to see if any parts could be useful to them for their Beaufighters?

Actually, not to mention the two Beaufort restoration projects in Oz, too! Wonderful news.

I think in NZ, as ErrolC alluded to, we are very lucky with our commentators. Classic Fighters in particular has a team who knows when to be silent, but shares historic anecdotes as well as some vital stats (I know this is a grammatical mess, excuse me!). There is a particular commentator, a former TV presenter, who makes a lot of sexist commentary which attracted a lot of flak on another forum but he seems to have been getting less and less work recently.

I have to confess that, even though the speaker boxes are set up all along the crowdline at Kiwi shows and generally at a fairly high volume, I don’t remember ever being upset with not being able to hear the aircraft.

Also – comments about people filming for their own private benefit are, in the age of YouTube, a little inaccurate. Folks like me are half a world away from Duxford, Oshkosh, La Ferte Alais etc, so I get a lot of pleasure from being able to watch privately filmed material from shows overseas on YouTube for free. I now know what a P-36 sounds like, what a sweet song the Blenheim makes as it flies by, and – albeit through headphones – experienced the Vulcan Howl. I for one am very grateful to people who video airshows, even with chatter from people nearby. It allows someone with no financial ability to attend to have a small slice of what it’s like.

Stephen Carr, the photos of your daughter building brought a big smile to my face! I love to see a new generation of builders at work! Likewise Propstrike, that’s great to see! I remember drawing taxiways and runways on my building desk and doing one-man airshows with my models.

I would have to say the kit in the OP is about the worst plastic Spitfire I’ve seen, somehow managing to be worse than the Starfix one: http://modelingmadness.com/review/allies/gb/moorespit.htm Kits like that make me see the reason behind the old US and (for a while) Airfix practice of having a photo of the completed model on the box, to show what you’d get. That’s just awful!!!

I feel the need to point out that anyone new to models – especially children – does not have to go straight to the normal Airfix or Revell kits, as good as they are (and new Airfix kits are absolutely brilliant). Hobby Boss does great “semi snap” kits which capture the outline of the subject matter – not just Spitfires, Hurricanes, Mustangs and 109s but also Texans, Yak-3s, P-39s, Dewoitines, all sorts – and don’t have many parts. They’re a great introduction to the hobby.

So the former OFMC machine is not the same one now owned by FHC/Paul Allen, which recently left Duxford?

Also, would the IWM have obtained the ex-OFMC machine around the same time as the Phantom FGR.2 XV474? If so, was it a sale or a donation? Just curious as I’ve recently been looking at that Phantom’s history and the OFMC>IWM transfer seems murky in my own, very limited, research.

Just lovely photos. Thanks a lot for sharing, gents.

Seeing the cockpit of the U-2 gave me a real thrill!

WOW! It really is a serious piece of kit.

Any chance those are Tempest or Typhoon blades on the floor?

Was this the company that, a year or two back, suggested they would be offering “Fly With A Mossie” experiences?

Lovely photos Brian, I really like the second-to-last with Sally B starting up.

That SPAD is a very nice example, I quite like the paint scheme and finish. How long has it been since it flew? I see from a brief Google search it has an IO-360 up front. Would be a very practical replica to own.

    Where ??
    Ken

I can see it in the link itself: “ww2-fighter-jet-jewish-gravestones-found-polish-river-drought_n_8041548.html”

And a caption is even worse  : “A Soviet WWI fighter-bomber plane”

Kudos to those who can identify anything in those photos, I could barely discern the engine remains. Hopefully they can identify the pilot and inform his/her family.

Greg’s Avian has quite the modern-day history, so fingers crossed it gets a home in the UK or Australia.

I’m stunned to see this collection go up for sale, it seemed Greg Herrick would show up at each Airventure in a different machine. What an amazing collection.

I too saw this on Facebook, excellent news for the Australian warbird scene! Congratulations to the new owner and to Pays for adding another machine to their “to do” list. Great stuff.
