RE: Airliners you’d love to fly on

I flew on a lot of Tristars (BA, Gulf Air & Cathay Pacific) regularly when I was a kid living in the middle east. But none of the airlines we used had DC-10s, which just got me intrigued I suppose.

Turboprops are different – there is usually very good acceleration on take off and they’re fun. The Dash 8 flights in/out of LCY are about the most fun you’ll have as a passenger (no funny comments please!). Maybe that’s why the Dash 7 seems so interesting. Oh, and delete the “shed” from this – no fun!!

RE: Firefighters strike – a review.

Well here in the Isle of Man, nearly all the firefighters have second jobs which they do in addition to being firemen.

We’ve all heard stories of “striking” fireman driving taxis!

Secondly, if the conditions are so bad, why is there such a big waiting list for new recruits?

Thirdly, they are public servants. This means they will always be badly paid – just like teachers, policemen, doctors….it was their choice to enter public service.

    RE: Airport landing charges

Don’t be fooled by the £8/£18 seat prices. This applies only to a proportion of the available seats!

The business models of locos are quite clever and “yield management” is the underlying philosophy. They generate revenue per flight which is not too far off the majors, which combines well with lower operating costs.

The rule of thumb is that if the revenue for a flight is enough to cover the “marginal cost” then the route will be flown. Marginal cost is basically the cost of flying the route as opposed to the cost of the aircrtaft sitting on the tarmac. Certain costs – lease payments, crew salaries, promotional costs etc.. will be incurred regardless of whether the aircraft flies or not. Other costs are marginal, such as fuel, landing fees, overtime/sector pay for staff and so on. As wysiwyg has pointed out, the accountants are taking over 🙂

    Dan330,

The 747-500 reference might mean the 747-400XQLR.

This is supposed to enter service in 2004 and is a quieter version of the 747-400ER with an additional 11,000lb payload and presumably, yet more range and less fuel consumption.

    And the question is 7×6

Although the question and answer are mutually exclusive, so neither makes sense on it’s own, but pre-knowledge of one of them prevents the other one being known!

I think so. My ears always used to pop after a flight in the “flying coffin” as it was called in the IOM.

Wysiwyg – one of the few aircraft with less appeal than a 1900D!

I bought a tie a few months ago, and the carry case was embossed with a quote from Oscar Wilde:
