RE: Music/Musician That You Can’t Stand?!?!

In no particular order, apart from the speed with which they came to mind:

    1. N-sync
    2. Westlife
    3. Atomic Kitten
    4. Any generic boy band or girl band
    5. Jazz
    6. Manufactured music
    7. Folk music
    8. Country & Western

    Denmark scare me a bit.

Stig Tofting is a human bulldozer, and the world’s most useless striker (Jon Dahl Tomasson) suddenly became good. Very good and very, very on form. Still, England have the best defence of all the group qualifiers and possibly the best defence at the WC, certainly after the Italians showed themselves up the other day against Mexico.

Can I try and redeem the aeronautical thread – by asking what preacuations have been taken in California against quakes affecting airports? Lots of fuel, lots of long thin bombs with wings, and lots of people all in close proximity…

    Correction accepted, Snowman.

    I apologise.

I would be disgusted if anyone considered me a xenophobe, but that is what my post essentially marked me out as. My excuse is that I am mentally fatigued from some of the most demanding exams (Tax Planning, Financial Reporting) of my life!

Once again, apoligies to Keltic and indeed to any Argies reading.

RE: Same old anti – US Crap

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-06-02 AT 01:03 AM (GMT)]Europeans couldn’t give two hoots about freedom or democracy where trade is concerned. The Brits supplied weaponry for use against the population of East Timor, we arm the Saudi regime. The list goes on…

Freedom and democracy are nice to encourage, but not at the expense of trade relations. Every country (especially the UK) which has chosen an “ethical foreign policy” has ended up with egg on their faces for, essentially, the above reason.

    But…

The US is exactly the same.

Maybe more so, because it cooperated with “evil” (spot the not so subtle irony) regimes not just for trade (as with Europe) but also for strategic geo-political purposes.

Do you SERIOUSLY think that US support of Taiwan is purely because of a spring of concern for the people of Taiwan!? I don’t think anyone would believe that genuine concern was 100% of the reason. Even to consider that it was say, 75%, of the reason would still be ludicrously naive.

I might just add that the US take on Israel/Palestine suffers likewise (trade + geo-political ambition) Maybe there is more genuine sympathy (let’s keep the voters happy) – but Palestine is heardly a big trade bloc is it.

    GD1,

The Great British Weather is what defines us! Why else would so many Brits emigrate to hotter climes? The rest of the world has the British weather to thank for having to put up with us all!

Besides, I don’t think I would personally like Californian weather all year round. Being of an occassional feeble mind, the Earthquake threat would perturbe me as well.I think the weather up in Sweden is perfect; quite hot (well, occassionally up to 30) in the summer and cold (crisp cold, not wet cold like the UK) the rest of the year.

In fact, nearly everyone I speak to has positive vibes about Sweden (and not just because of Sven-Goran!!). All round, about as close to Utopia as I have ever experienced, anyway.

Sorry – this has absolutely nothing to do with commercial aviation. I’m just in a pro-Swedish mood right now for some reason.

Okay – you’re all about to think that I am an intectually retarded imbecile…..

When I was about 5, I was flying LHR-Bahrain with BA, on one of their old Tristars.

Somewhere over about Egypt I think (maybe skirting round Libya) we got an escort of F-14’s.

At the time, I had a plastic model jet figther (F-4 I think) and I put it by the window, wondering if the F-14 pilots could see it.

After a while, the F-14s peeled away and I got scared out of my little wits. I though they HAD seen my F-4 toy but they thought it was a real F-4 being flown by enemies, so they went to try and shoot it down.

I was on the verge of blurting it out to my Mum, when the Captain announced that due to a technical issue we would be diverting to Cairo. I was so, so scared!

I don’t think the Argies will laugh at us.

In 1982 we kicked their arse
In 2001 we literally kicked their arse

And our country hasn’t gone bankrupt either. Nor did we base our post-WW2 strategy on providing a home for Nazis.

    Snowman,

Just to clarify – what I meant was that the factors I outlined were applicable when looking at any team OTHER than your own.

    RE: Argentina

If I follow a particular foreign team at a tournament, I do so because of the football they play. That is why so many neutrals have a soft spot for Brazil, Holland and even Spain.

You are perfectly correct when you say that the arrogance is on the part of the players, not the supporters. The same applies to France. But having seen this arrogance, I want them to go home. The passion of football is about 11 men vs. 11 men, and the consequences at home for the losing team don’t bother me. It isn’t my fault that Argentina’s economy is in a mess!

No one “deserves” anything in football, irrespective of their domestic situation. That would be like hoping that Senegal beat Denmark just because the average person in Senegal is poor by comparison to the average Dane. I want the best team to win – the team that is better to watch.

    RE: Hate particular Airline/ Aircraft?

I heard a funny anecdote about Aeroflot. Some passengers were waiting at Moscow about 16 hours for their delayed flight to LHR. Finally, they boarded the aircraft.

After some more delay, the Captain announced that the cabin crew would be having a collection in the cabin. They needed a spare part, but they didn’t have any money.

Not sure if it was just urban myth or reality!
