RE: Guidelines for World Cup commentators in the U
Yes, the “British sense of humour” is great.
Here on the Isle of Man, we collectively entered a yacht in the BT Global Challenge yacht race last year. All sorts of local firms sponsored our entry and had their logos painted on the sides.
The best bit though, is that our firm (I am assured this is true)…had their logo painted on the bottom of the yacht! They assumed it would capsize because it was British!
RE: First points..
France are in trouble.
IF they get 3 points against the Danes, that only puts them on 4 points. Senegal have that much already!
In my opinion, it will all come down to goal difference. Which means France will need to score a hatfull. Denmark are no pushover, and you can effectively rule out Zidane – even if he plays, he will be short of match fitness.
France have 2 big, big weaknesses. Lebouef is an absolute liability and France will only get away with his defending if Desailly plays well, which he hasn’t been.
The other problem is central midfield. Vieira looks to be imporving, but Petit has been mediocre to say the least. Micoud looks a useful replacement for Zidane, but I don’t think he’s quite good enough to make up for it if the rest of the team plays badly!
Does anyone else find the whole thing really surreal?
In 1998, everyone was saying that France were a really good team apart from not having any good strikers.
In 2002, everyone is saying that France are a really good team apart from their defence!
RE: Going On Holiday?
I will be going to Melbourne and Tasmania for 5 days at the end of this month to see my fiancee.
My little brother graduates from University in late July, so we might spend a few days over in Amsterdam.
Over Christmas, I am supposed to be meeting my parents in Cape Town if I can wrangle some time off work!
And tomorrow (England v. Argentina) I was very close to devloping a very infectious cold…(!)…until I realised that it is a public holiday here anyway! (Senior Race Day, for the TT Motor Bike race).
Hopefully I can get down to London for some R&R weekends this year too. The journey’s great – I never get tired of sitting in a window seat approaching LCY!
And then sometime in 2003 I will open my credit card statements!!!
RE: Indian Civil Aviation Disaster!
Kabir
What about Virgin?
Don’t worry – they’ll all be back, as long as India and Pakistan don’t nuke each other.
RE: Swiss in ONEWORLD?
I suppose we have a different point of view greekdude!
From my perspective, BA is acting rationally. Heathrow is a blot on the UK economy, yet BA is stuck with it. It isn’t their fault that slots are so contstrained.
Also, BA are “morally” correct to oppose Swiss. BA is about the only airline in Europe that hasn’t been bailed out or subsidised by the state. Can you say the same about Swiss?
RE: Mobile Phones
Okay, point proved!
There is nothing as irritating as idiots who are unable to keep quiet for a few hours and like penis-substitute ring tones – oh look, mine’s better than yours!
RE: How will England get on at the World Cup? Plac
We have every chance on taking 6 points from the Argentina and Nigeria games. Don’t forget the Argies are probably more scared of Owen than we are of Batistuta or Crespo.
We also have a better defence, and over a one off match, an energetic midfield (Butt, Dyer, Hargreaves) can match a more skilfull one.
RE: QUEENS AMAZING FLYPAST!!!
Agree about the camerawork.
2 seconds of the Typhoon, 5 seconds of the underneath of a BAE 146 and missed the BAE 125 completely.
RE: Sheffield Airport.
I’m not so sure about the gloomy prospects.
Humberside – a million miles from anywhere in the middle of a field.
Leeds – middle of nowhere. I remember when I used to live in Hull, the journey time to Manchester was about the same as Leeds, because Leeds/Bradford is at the end of small and confusing roads.
Sheffield – a lot easier to get to!
Having said that, the idea of a STOLport seems silly to me – these things are only economic with high volumes (ie London City).
RE: SPAIN
I’m not sure what your point is. Is 3 new airports good or bad?
It is more than the UK.
I think you will need to accept the fact that if airports are in government ownership, they will always be underinvested. Nearly all airports are privately owned in the UK. Some are really nice, but others are horrible. At least competition means that there is a good choice of airports around the country, though Heathrow is nasty and too dominant.
RE: Onboard Air Quality?
All I can say is that when I get off a long flight these days, I feel much worse than I was when I got on the aircraft!
Some of that is due to lack of sleep, some of it is due to horrible seats. But a good portion is also due to poor air quality.
Are some aircraft worse than others? I remember the BAE 146 had a terrible reputation, for being nearly lethal in this respect. What are your opinions?
BA
My choice is BA.
They have very good connections and they fly nearly everywhere from London.
Biz and First class are very, very good. Some people will compare it unfavourably to SIA or Emirates, but BA is very nearly at the same level. Good for a big airline.
Also…they fly Concorde. That makes them win by default!
RE: QUEENS AMAZING FLYPAST!!!
It was amazing.
Must be one of the best aerial sights I can remember – Concorde leading the red arrows, which were trailing red, white and blue smoke.
RE: Mobile Phones
Cost?
Surely new aircraft (A330/340, B777) could be cell phone friendly? Why block the signal?
My take is that the avionics lack any kind of shielding from cell phone signals. All you would have to do is “harden” things a little. That can’t be expensive -I would have thought a sotware solution would be adequate.
I’m just guessing with the technology – but I find it hard to believe that it cannot be done for a fairly small amount of money.
RE: Virgin Red-New US low cost airline
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-06-02 AT 12:52 PM (GMT)]>Wait a minute! You are barking up the wrong tree when you
>claim US protectionism will prevent low cost carriers from
>the UK getting established in the US. Do you see any low
>cost US carriers in Europe? I don’t think so
Okay, the set up cost is rather a large barrier to entry. But so is US protectionism. Do you think (hypothetically) that say, Singapore Airlines, Shell, or Vodafone would ever be allowed to buy Southwest?
The point is that they are not US companies.
One more point too:
I have never flown with either Southwest or Jet Blue. But, I imagine Jet Blue is nicer?
Ii I had to pay a few dollars extra – no problem. Also, what degree of route overlap is there between them??
