Dhfan – First past the post vs. Proportional representation, eh?
Both have their weaknesses; America has quasi-PR which resulted in the President having less popular votes than the runner up. They got a lot of criticism for that (mostly unwarranted).
The UN are as usual making a mockery of the word “democracy”.
5 tests my ar*e! You can’t reduce a noble concept down to something as simple as meeting 5 criteria. Plenty of countries meet those criteria, but are less democratic than the UK. Can I name Zimbabwe as an example? Or South Africa?.
By contrast the UK has a Monarch and we haven’t really got any freedom of information. But on balance, we are one of the better democracies around! Shss…don’t tell His Toniness though, he might get annoyed with us, his children, and try to take our powers away from us. Referenda? Bah, not for you kids!

Welcome and good luck!
That doesn’t seem wise – two thirds of the aircraft are small (all the MD-80’s, 734’s and A320s). Surely it would be better for MAN to insist on widebodies only?
The reason for the overreaction was China. Their authourities lied, cheated and concealed and generally understated the SARS cases. They compounded it the other day by talking about executions; I think people over here felt we were in for Tiannanmen Square version 2.
It was therefore prudent to assume it was far worse than officially recongnised. That’s had a bad effect on the tavel industry, particularly in Hong Kong.
But when SARS fears halt (which they will – Singapore for instance, is just about cleared by the WHO) there will be a recovery.
The trouble is – (a) how long will the SARS crisis last (weeks? months?) and (b) will the recovery be instant or drawn out over a year or so.
I’ve had version 5 for a few days now.
At the moment, it is full of bugs – I actually find it unusable.
However one of the features of the software is that there is a very active user group and the developers listen to them – updates are released every week or so, so bugs get ironed out quickly. You can use your order no. to register with their user forum, which is just lots of people talking about the software and how to use it to best effect. It’s like “Championship Manager” on speed!
The price is quite low for what you get – a very good value purchase. I downloaded my upgrade – it’s only 100Mb which is 15 or 20 mins on an average broadband connection.
The old version 4.3 was dodgy at first, but after 2 or 3 weeks most of the bugs had been sorted out and I expect the same to apply to the new version 5 also.
It’s even more dangerous to have a camera there than it is in Greece – that’s one brave snapper!
Ink, you probably read the New York Times too much!

That depends on whether they have the right to do so – it isn’t a given, for non-EU airlines.
Generally, they will get that right, but they can’t sell the tickets to the public as such. Eg. If i want to travel ROM to ATH, I probably couldn’t do so on Thai unless I started off in BKK.
SIA do the same: SIN-MAN-AMS, but the MAN-AMS portion is not on sale on a standalone basis.
Lufthansa could do exactly that.
In theory, the EU has full and unrestricted open skies by virtue of the Common Market – free movement of capital, free trade, no tarrifs. It is happening to a certain extent – Deutsche BA, VLM, Ryanair and Buzz all did this, with Buzz having a French domestic network in addtion to its main hub operations from London. VLM fly domestically in the UK, eg. MAN to LCY.
In practice, the EU is still basically protectionist thanks to the beaurocrats going against the spirit of EU law.
I flew on a Challenger once. It was in a shuttle configuration; just like a small CRJ-200. This was the early 1990’s, and the aircraft was one of 2 owned by the Zambian government. It used to sub for the regular Beech 1900C in Copperbelt flights from time to time. The Government had a 2nd Challenger, but it was in full VIP config and I never got near it!
When I was 14, I did a fortnights’ work experience at BAE Systems, at their Hawk factory in Brough. I did small jobs under supervision, but it was fun. I got to eat my lunch in the cockpit of a US Navy Goshawk, or an Abu Dhabi AF Hawk 200! On the last day, the site manager offered all the work experience kids (4 of us) a short flight in the corporate J31. It was set up for about 8 or 9 seats, which was really comfy. The pilot was a cheeky sort, and flew us over our houses, like a taxi driver!
Not sure
I disagree, it would be rash to say Air Kenya ae not at risk also. The terrorists would probably think a BA 747 would be “look better” but a message can still be put across on an Air Kenya plane.
Same applies to charter flights. It is not logical to presume to know the modus operandi of these people – if we did, there presumably wouldn’t be a threat in the first place.
In particular, Al’Qaeda are well known for being cunning and unpredictable!
How about Qantas?
They are getting the A330 and the A380; will the big Boeings be phased out?
Wonder if they want any wingwalkers?
