RE: Pic of the Day-My favourite large turboprop

Are there any airlines still using the Il-18 for passenger services?

That is very unprofessional of Boeing. Shame on them.

I can think of several high profile long haul airlines which chose the A340 over the 777 – Iberia, Virgin Atlantic, South African and that’s not all…

For a large aircraft it doesn’t have many windows!

Would the ICTZ be the thing that makes African flights really bumpy in the middle of the night? Whenever I’ve done the LHR-JNB or LHR-LUN/HRE runs, we get noticeable turbulence mid-flight, so maybe around the equator area. Then again, maybe it is the Sahara air?

No, it was a fair point – whatever I do, the fare is over £1000 in economy class!

Yes, BA fly MAN-GLA and so do BMI.

Types are usually either an ATP or EMB-145 (or 135 sometimes with BMI).

Yes, they had to fly around the coast of Africa, because they were banned from overflying black Africa. Other airlines (like BA) served JNB and CPT with B742’s – maybe they were not subject to the same restrictions.

BA do have spare aircraft though.

BA have never charged for soft drinks. Neither do Euromanx.

For long haul, I have never been on an airline that charges for anything inflight, except for phonecalls and duty free purchases.

    Just checked on expedia…

£330-ish for LHR-KEF if you both leave and return midweek. Add a weekend and the price goes up to £822.

    Ridiculous!!!

    To an extent.

Airports often use platitudes and exaggeration to bolster the ego of newcomers, and existing carriers realise this and take it for what it is (ie a large pinch of salt). I think the praise to Flybe for serving the IOM from LCY, NCL, BRS and BHD was fairly gushing too – so Flybe know what it’s all about.

LPL was the same – Ryanair served LPL-DUB for years and years then along comes Easyjet…

You better believe it, Iceland is a high-demand destination.

I’ve wanted to go for ages…but Icelandair (who seem to get quite bad reports) charge a fortune – £500 rtn for LHR-KEF and that is even with staying over a Saturday and going midweek!

Go did OK running STN-KEF but pulled out because:

    1. Summer was OK, but in the winter they needed to buy a helluva lot of de-icing fluid. I think it would also be fair to suggest the de-icing company at KEF might favour Icelandair for some reason!

    2. It’s a fairly long flight – maybe only 2 trips a day in each direction. It is probably more profitable to fly 4 times a day to somewhere nearer. That would also be less risky from a revenue point of view.

    3. For some odd reason, Go’s flights either left or returned to STN at about 2 in the morning!!

So they can collect a £10 booking fee I suppose!

I do not understand the “security” notion, which says only the person travelling is alowed to pay for the ticket.

    1. What about minors – are parents banned from paying now? Does that mean your 16 or 17 year old sprog gets a free flight (as airlines will not accept payment)?

    2. Loads of my colleagues have taken business trips in the last month or so. They have flown with BA, SAA, DL and AC. On all occasions, our dept. secretary booked the flights using a corporate credit card in HER name. How come this was allowed?

    3. Exactly how, does this enhance security?
