Because the mixture can only be admitted to the cylinders from the crankcase through ports in the cylinder itself. Most two strokes use the suction from the descending piston to admit the mixture into the combustion chamber. This can be controlled by reed or disc valves in the case of a normally aspirated two stroke engine. For forced induction (supercharging for the ignorant)two strokes, the admission of mixture into the cylinder must be more positively controlled. Thats where the sleeve valve comed into play. Voila.

Rolls Royce also experimented with a V12 sleeve valve engine in the form of the Crecy. This engine was a sleeve valve two stroke which made, by all accounts, a gorgeous sound.

Other way around, I would rather ask about what is so special about the Typhoon that everyone rates is as second best after the Raptor. I personally cannot find anything on EF2000 that would make the bird so unbeatable.

Could it be the component that sits on the ejection seat?

I don’t believe the John Derry DH110 accident stopped mach 1 dives at airshows because this continued in my memory into the mid sixties. Also the DH110 at Farnborough was at a much lower speed when the rolling pull manouvre caused the fracture in the starboard wing which triggered the rapid break up of the aircraft. It did not take skill to dive an aircraft like the hunter or DH110 through mach 1. Just lower the nose at full power at a height which guaranteed exceeding mach 1 before increasing air temp put it out of reach. The hunter handled well at supersonic speed if trimmed correctly. The only significant transonic effect was to tighten up in turns or pull-outs risking a G overshoot and overstress. This was cured on later aircraft with the saw tooth leading edge.

I thought that the X1 exceeded Mach 1, not in level flight, but in a climb. This would make sense because with decreasing temperature (increasing altitude), the speed of sound also decreases. Big rocket bolted to backside – Voila.

Miles M52 should have been allowed to do it with a jet engine of course.

A Bridge Too Far aka A Film Too Long.

More appreciated these days than when it was made.

As far as I remember, a number of mock up Horsas were built for the film but only one was capable of being ground towed by a Dak to simulate take off. I believe that a couple of genuine non-airworthy WACO Hadrians were also used. The only complete example of a Horsa will be the new-build MK1 presently 2/3 complete at Shawbury.
