There is a good history of the 262 written by Mano Zeigler called Hitlers Jet Plane – he also wrote Rocket Fighter. Cracking read. It certainly dispels the myth that the delay to the 262 was all Adolfs fault. Also I have just finished reading Fire in the Sky by Amos Amir. This is the autobiography of an Israeli fighter pilot flying the Mirage during the major campaigns of the 60s and 70s and ended up as a Major General flying F16s – superb.

If you like jet combat books have you read Feet Wet by Admiral(ret) Paul Gilgrist or Thud Ridge by Jack Broughton. Both give you the feeling of living with the authors in the cockpit. Brilliant.

Airframe limitations are not just about straight G. Aircraft have max manoevring speeds defined as Vman. This speed is defined as the limit to which maximum control deflection can be used by the pilot up to the max straight G limitation. Above Vman only a third of control deflection is allowed, and in some aircraft such as VX770 the straight G limit was much lower. This restriction of allowable control deflection particularly applied to aileron control because of the twisting forces applied to the wing. In the case of VX770, the pilot was limited to 1.75G and 360kts for the planned rolling/pull manoevre. What he actually did was to perform the manoevre at 420kts with a substantial aileron deflection way above Vman. The twisting force on the starboard wing caused a failure of the leading edge structure which then caused the skin to peel back ‘like a sardine tin’. All this occured with a G loading estimated at less than 2G.
The production B1 had a redesigned wing planform and leading edge structure which meant the operational limits were higher than VX770 – but not by much.

If he’d have known what would happen to the development aircraft flown by a Rolls Royce test pilot at the RAF Syerston display a few years later he probably wouldn’t have rolled it. The aircraft came apart at less than 2G rolling into a right bank.

Serious question. What sort of combat record does the MIG 23 have?
I have heard it shot down the odd hostile civilian 747 but beside killing quite a few of its own pilots did it do much else?

What year were you at 633VGS?
I flew an SG38, which was the German built Grasshopper, a few years ago at Bicester. In my one minute sortie I discovered that it was certainly affected by the 5 knot gusting wind and required huge control deflections to get any sort of response. Felt pretty exposed too sitting on a two inch wide fuselage. Hats off to those earlier cadets although of course everythings relative – that’s all they had then. When the T21 was introduced it must have been like dying and going to heaven – two proper seats inside the fuselage, one for the instructor who actually came flying with you instead of yelling from the ground through a megaphone, and a flight time measured in minutes rather than seconds!
