I had a go on a mate’s Canon 350D for the first time today, and I discovered a rather curious ergonomic issue that affects people who use their left eye to look through the viewfinder – or maybe it’s just me.
My nose kept pressing the two control buttons to the right of the viewfinder – which became quite annoying after a while.
Apart from that it’s a nice camera, though.
You can get a viewfinder extension for those problems….I get away with it just by the particular way that I hold/use the camera.
Great improvement there Matt, did you get the new memory card?
Excellent stuff, the 350D’s very nice eh? Can’t get enough of mine, since I got it a few weeks back. Did you do aviation photography before you brought it, or are these your first attempts?
Excellent stuff Mark, you jammy git with those free flights!
Ah sorry CB, I see you mentioned ‘DLR’ in your last post. Didn’t register at first that is what you meant, now I know! 🙂
Well I have a 2 or 3 differnt lenses – these were all taken using the Canon 75-300 USM AF lens, which whilst not top notch seems to be working OK for me so far.
As for location I went to “Royal Albert” on the DLR and just walked down to the north side of the dock roughly abeam the 10 threshold. No-one else about for the hour or so I was there. Great views of the apron etc. – and the 10 approach – I guess it wouldn’t be quite so good if they’re on 28, but still worth a go. But I wouldn’t take a car – just do it via public transport then you’ve no parking hassles.
Thanks for that, I’ll have to try it when I get some chance soon. I’ve always been told it’s not worth it apart from in the morning rush because of the traffic, but it looks quite busy around 4pm? If I got the Docklands Light railway from inner London to the airport, how would you recommend that I get to those spots (bus?).
Be aware – the Tall Ships race is leaving Newcastle on 28th July and around 1 million people are expected along the Tyne to watch (my family included). Don’t know enough about the approach or departure paths at NCL, but the potential is there for some awesome views out of the aircraft if you’re lucky. 🙂
Sounds excellent! Is this a globally recognised event? Because 1 million people sounds like a lot….potentially some chartered movements at NCL on the day?
CB, excellent stuff. What lense are you using there with 300D? I live 25 miles from LCY and have always wanted to try it, but I’ve never been able to find out any definite places for photography (always being told about police moving you on etc.). Would you have any suggestions, and a best time/day of week to go up? That looks like a pretty good selection for 4pm!
Very nice Tom, excellent stuff. Flybe Q400 wins it for me. I look forward to visiting BHX in the summer.
LOL, just a bit! 😀
6 flights in just over a week, including 2 types you’ve never flown before, you lucky guy!
You’ll be the FlyBe ‘expert’ flying them 4 times in 2 days!
Lol indeed, I very much look forward to it. Hopefully gonna fit a holiday in between the BLK and BFS flights, so there’ll be lots of shots to enjoy!
Cant wait for the 146. I was booked to fly on a Buzz one from STN-AMS a few years back, but FR took over the month before and cancelled the flights 🙁
Cheers, guys, I look forward to flying over.
Hope you have a great time Dan, cant wait for you to tell me about the Q400, i fly on one myself 5 days later!
Hehe well there should be a huge influx of photo reports over those few days, if you look at my flight plans for the 2 days leading upto it! 😮
I agree about last months EZY feature, very interesting. And the one in the previous month, about the EK pilot. I didn’t realise they could choose their routes they want!
I’ve bought every AW since the first issue. And I still maintain that the first issue was the best one! About 10 pages with photos of all the BA World Tails, explaining the background and meaning of each tail.
Cheers NCLRULES, the nature reserve looks good. And even better that the Arriva bus operates in that direction, as I can use it for free 😀
Me and Mark L are booked up now for the 28th July, so if anyone feels like coming along feel free.
Well done Stuart, definitely much improved. Looks like you can pretty close to the climb out’s at EDI….might have to see about making my way up there at some point (climb out shots are my fav! 😀 ).
As most know (I hardly kept quiet about it!) I now own a Canon 350D after reaching the best that my old camera could produce me. A DSLR is not essential, and even if you can afford it, you shouldn’t just buy one for the sake of it. I think in the long run it makes you a much better photographer if you have to work with worse equipment and build yourself up, and then when you make the transition to DSLR it will be much more rewarding (and you’ll know what you’re doing too).
I’m very happy with the 350D, but by the end of the year I’d like to improve my lense. The 100mm-400mm IS looks pretty sweet, but I’m no too sure on 100 as a starting point. My current lense starts at 75mm and that is too much in some situations (as Mark L heard numerous times on our Shannon trip “I can’t fit the b@stard in the frame!”)
and remember the excellent pictures that young Dan posted on here before he got his current pride and joy.
Why, thank you 😮
