The 170-500 would be good to have, but only if you can afford something good (as Andy says) in the 28-135mm range along side it. 170mm could be quite restrictive at some airports, and I can think of many places (around UK airports) where it’d be far too much zoom to do what you want.
I agree with what bring_it_on says about looking for second hand cameras/lenses if it means you’ll be able to get a much better set-up, but if you couldn’t afford it then you shouldn’t be too convinced about getting the 20D for “u can get a much better photography” as opposed to the 350D.
The 350D is pretty much a stripped down version of the 20D, just as the 300D was of the 10D. There are certain draw-backs of both the 300D and 350D from the cameras they derive from, but the quality of photography is going to be very similar.
As for lenses, again it depends on your budget. If you can find a good second hand deal, then by all means go for the Sigma 50-500 (I’m considering this lense as an upgrade from mine). But if you’re on a tight budet and you just want a good quality set-up, then you can always look at something like the Canon 75-300 USM, or the IS version. Both would get you excellent results, and many peope (including me) use the lense as a good starting point.
Thanks everyone, always encouraging to hear feedback. Makes it worth spending about 5 hours editing them etc!
Great pics Dan, shall we be seeing them on JP.net soon? 🙂
Indeed you will. I’m just working towards my 500th now, should have it on there by next week when the current batch are screened 🙂
Cheers everyone, glad you like them! 😀
SNN looks well worth a visit, that MD11 looks so classy 🙂
We were talking about that yesterday, looks very retro, 1970’s.
Sorry I couldn’t get a full frame shot, I had too much zoom! (my lense starts at 75mm, which was too much to fit the MD-11 into).
And just to finish it off 🙂

And just a few wing views ‘cos I know you like them! first is looking down the runway at SNN. Next is a reflection of the sunset in the wing.
Also got an overview of the airport on departure, and a cabin view from our outbound flight.

Also some airlines slash their fares and add the rest onto the taxes and charges to make the actual fare look a little better.
Surely that’s illegal, making ‘fake’ taxes?
Well done on the shots Elgan. How about the Fokker cockpit then, small eh? I got in one after my flight on a Malaysia Airlines one last year, and could hardly fit through the door (I’m a skinny b@stard too!).
Wannabe , How sharp you are !! Yeah, iv recently purchased a canon 300d. They were trying to sell them off cheap as they had a batch of 350’s in. Just experimenting at the moment trying to get pics right. Practice makes perfect and all that !!
Kaplan, Im afraid I dont know where the Air Atlantic was off to. Sorry.
G.
What lense you got with it, 75-300 III USM?
Indeed practice does make perfect, if you haven’t already then try and get learning the manual features of the DSLR as soon as you can.
Great stuff Graham, you seem to have changed camera since the last time you posted?
Cheers guys, I appreciate it. Glad you liked ’em, if I get a chance I’ll look into editing a few more.
In answer to Q3:
I’m 16, currently doing GCSE’s. I’ve wanted to be an airline pilot since my first flight at 5 years old, but it’s always very touch-and-go due to the ups and downs of the industry. I have currently come to the decision that I shouldn’t worry too much until I’ve finished 6th form, because most routes I take will favour A-level students (although this isn’t always the case, as seen with Martin_EGTK). Upon completing 6th form, I’ll be able to make the best decision, taking into factors such as price of courses, state of industry etc.
These will revolve around:
a) Looking for a sponsorship, to gain all licenses and experience needed (PPL, CPL, ATPL, night rating, instrument rating, etc) to become an airline pilot. At the moment they are few and far between, but I’m hoping that within the next couple of years they may be back as common as they were before September 11th.
b) Find a way of doing everything myself, which would probably mean paying for a full course to take me from no hours, all the way to owning a frozen ATPL. These kind of courses exist around the World….the most famous one in the UK being at Oxford. It would probably mean finding some kind of loan.
I’m not gonna give up easily! If everything along those routes fails, then Air Traffic Control appeals to me. I did my work experience in the Stansted tower, and it’s a fantastic job. But I’m not sure if I’d particularly enjoy being in an indoor control centre, and this is where a majority of new recruits would go.
Another option would be professional photography (preferably aviation) although I’ve yet to find out anything in much depth about that.
Cheers, Flex and Tom 🙂
