The story with the B-52 was it was being used to test the stresses of low level flight with a full external load (note the Hound Dog missiles) to see what needed to be re-enforced for the low altitude penetrator mission. It turned out the main spar of the rudder and fuselage bulkhead it joins to needed to be re-enforced.
I wonder how they figured that one out. 😀

That is not true, however, no F-15 has been lost in air to air combat. 😉
Considering the first Strike Eagles are now almost 20 years old and theres no replacement in sight, 16’000 hours wasnt a bad idea.
The problem with the gear is not its weakness (F-15 is no F-16 😀 ) but the very high ground pressure esp for the front gear. The main gears have larger tyres and thus bulged doors, but i believe there was no space left for a larger front tyre.
Anything else but a concrete runway is a no-go for an Eagle.
Those would be F-15Cs, they would need a fair bit of work to give them the sort of capability that the E models have and are rather older to boot.

To date, those would be F-15A I think, the Cs went to the ANG or to Nellis.
Wouldnt make much sense, they are really old (and A/A only). You might aswell keep the F-111 a little longer instead.
Thats what I would do anyway. The extra cost of a new airframe as a stop gap should be higher than keeping the F-111 until F-35 is ready.

I know that, but so far I have seen Swiss Mirage pics with one Falcon only. I wondered why the missile was not exactly on the centerline, assumed it was because of the SEPR rocket. Now I know better. 😀
PII, I dont think the centerline tank plus missiles would fit. The centerline tank wasnt an operational option anyway since its subsonic afaik.
The SEPR rocket however is the sime size as the rear fuselage fuel tank so thats possible. No guns with the rocket though, as that space is used for rocket fuel.

sorry but they didnot say it is equiped either. and the manufacturer figures are the only figures. the rest are just secondary sources. even it is against the logic that fighter with 1 ton heavier engines and larger structure with traditional materials have only 1 ton weight difference.
the is true for Su-27 vs Su-30. Su-30 is 2 ton heavier than Su-27 but in every website range is mentioned the same as 3000 KM. but in manufacturer site Su-27 has 3530 KM range vs 3000KM for Su-30.

Also remember the SH is no small aircraft, pretty close to an F-15, and its a carrier fighter.
Oh, and the Boeing website says “Maximum combat radius without refueling: over 1,000 nautical miles”.
I thought the F119 has a lower bypass ratio than the F-135? Since Turbojets (or leaky turbojets like the F119) perform better at high altitude than true turbofans like the F100 ot F110, it’s more suited to the Raptor’s likely flight envelope.

Could you post the range figures you have on the Strike Eagle, SH, JSF, and Raptor??
I havent seen reliable date for the SH, but its said to have less range than planned. I have read 11% more than a legacy Hornet which is far less than the requirement was (40% more I think). Wikipedia currently says 350sm.
For the Strike Eagle i honestly dont know, but you can be sure it has the longest legs of all US fighters – with CFTs.

The F-35 is said to have a “600+nm” radius, taken from JSF program brief at jsf.mil. Actually, I have also seen much less than 600 miles for the Raptor which is no wonder. It carries not much more fuel but has two engines with higher bypass ratio compared to the smaller single engined F-35 with lower bypass ratio.
you are comparing a fan site with official manufacture site. there is no F-15C on boeing site.
F-18E extensively use advance materials in construction and has lighter avionics , radar and twin engines are lighter by whole 1000 KG than F-15E and hence need lighter airframe to support it. accordingly F-18E is expensive than F-15E. Boeing cleary has land version of F-18 on its website.
Sorry, but the empty weight of the F-15 is no secret. Nowhere in your link does it say empty anyway.
Fact is: the SH is almost as heavy as a Strike Eagle (without CFTs). Also theres no dedicated land based version except maybe on paper. Could be done of course if youre willing to invest.
Now this is not a completely clear recollection but isn’t the RCS reduction tech of the Raptor a generation behind that of the Lightning and therefore still requiring significant maintenance to its integrity. Would the RAAF not just be trading one hangar queen for another.
The Raptor is designed to require less maintenance than the Eagle. So it shouldnt be bad i.e. less time for airframe/avionics/engine but more for its stealth features. Besides, the F-35 RCS stuff may find its way to the Raptor.
F-15E has over 20 ton empty weight with 36 ton MTOW. it is 5 ton heavier than F-18E and is likely to consume alot fuel just because of weight and frontal area. and non afterburning thrust of F414 is alot closer to the larger engine. and thats what matters.

Thats not F-15Es empty weight but take-off weight of an F-15C 😉
Its about 14,6 tons without and 16,5 tons with CFTs. Thats operating weight as can be found here: http://www.f-15estrikeeagle.com.
The Super Hornet with 13,8 is only 800kg short of the F-15E and thats for the single seater. Add a few hundred kg of weight and subtract a few hundred kg of fuel for the F.
Dry thrust is combarable for both engines.
Very important for Australia is range. Here the F-15E is clearly the winner. Unfortunately, the F-111 has never seen a real successor. Maybe the FB-22/23 or something like that will be one, but for now the F-15E is closest. Second is the F-35 and third F-22. The Lightning actually outranges the Raptor.
Last option is the Super Hornet of course. 🙂
