Has this copycat idea ever been confirmed ? To me it seems like the MiG-25 was the first design in this category.
I tink it was operational before the Tomcat flew ?Reducing yaw and drag by intergrating the engines in the fuselage seems like a obvious idea for a jet twin anyway, no need to copy anyone.
I think only the British got it wrong 😉
It seems like you mixed that up. The F-14/MiG-29/Su-27 have podded engines compared to the A-5/MiG-25/F-15 and also F-22 line with engines integrated in a boxy fuselage.
F/A-18s are going to the Navy and Marines, not the Air Force.
If youre talking about Super Hornets, the Marines dont want any of those. 🙂
F-15E and F-16 are still in production, but only for foreign customers.
Very impressive…… just wondering… each time he seems to roll to the left just a little before pulling up….
Probably to avoid crashing into his wingman in case something goes wrong. Like in the nice video DTJJ has posted.
Cool !!
Does it mean that aircrafts like the Mirage III or the F106 would also be able to do that ?
Or what is special in the Draken (aerodynamic, engine, air duct) ?
I dont know about the F-106, but I think the Mirage 3 can do it. Must be somewhere on this forum. 🙂
I wonder why the F-15 Aggressor is carrying two external fuel tanks? Maybe one centerline……….
I wondered that myself. Agressor Vipers usually fly without external fuel.
Perhaps its done to degrade the F-15s performance to a level blue forces can handle 😀
Hi eagle,
BEAUTY! Thank you very much for the pic. 😀
Well I only posted the link. 😀
Here’s one from airliners.net:

And the same jet in 1982 🙂

Heres one of the grey/blue aggressor Eagles, taken from the same link:

Looks absolutely awesome. And its true, the Eagles look almost factory fresh at probably around 25 years 🙂
They can always buy the 777, which trounces a 330 design! Or they can buy a combination of 777 and 737 tankers, if they so wanted. Either way, protecting the interests of US companies is exactly why this contract should go to Boeing. American company, American jobs. Sorry, but don’t tell me about Northrop partnering with Airbus.
So how much of a B767 is actually made in the USA? Remember the whining of Sikorsky when they lost the chopper deal. The American president should fly in an American chopper etc etc when in fact the European EH101 has more workshare in the US than the Sikorsy helo. 😀
Isn’t it funny how all MiG-23s that allegedly killed F-16s got shot down themselves?
F-18 is NAVY…
The USAF doesn’t Tornados, Jaguars or A-6s does it? :diablo:
USAF does however, operate the AWACs which tallys the losses/kills…
USAF, USN or other coalition air force doesnt matter, they were all on the same team.
Do you think that if an F-15 was shot down over Iraq by a MiG-21bis, the USAF would openly admit such a loss, stripping the veil of unbeatability off their premier fighter? Given the rumor F-15 has built over the last 30 years, that would be one stupid thing to do, effectively damaging the PR picture of US Armed Forces..
If I were on charge in Pentagon, after such incident I would immediately order a small ‘correction’ in AWACS data and ‘confirmed’ the lost F-15 as shot down by SAM. US tech fans would have their joy, US pilots would feel safe, combat morale would stay on desirable level.. Where is the problem?
Same could be said about the F-18 or any other fighter. And it was an F-15E, hardly a premier fighter.
Of course, what you suggest could be theoretically true. Then I suggest all ~40 planes lost were in fact shot down by rusty MiG-21, PC-7, Mi-24 and some even with a farmers rifle… 😀
I dont have any sources for that though 😉
I cannot really go on with this conversation. We seem to disagree on very fundamental things. You are assuming that Boeing is keen on to present his fighter as it really is, ergo vulnerable, because it is TRUTH. I say, Boeing will try to cover up anything that could damage its name and the name of its products. And if it means to potentially cover up a combat loss due to A-A in order to still call the F-15 ‘unbeaten’, then they will do anything what is necessary. To bribe a few officers in order to replace the ‘A-A’ with ‘SAM’ really ain’t that hard. It is definitely the most logical thing to do..
I am not assuming that this must really have happened. But I think it would happen if that was the case.
Boeing didnt build fighter planes in 1991 :diablo:
And they will stop building fighters when the last F-15 rolls off the line, but thats slightly off topic.
Now, why didnt they cover up the loss of the F-18, shot down by a MiG-25. That would make much more sense, since the F-18 was/is the newer design and had more sales potential than the older F-15. The F-18 was also unbeaten till that day.
I forgot: both are made by the same company. 😉
If the F-15 loss was faked, what about losses of other planes like Tornado, Jaguar, A-6, A-7 (just examples, I dont know if they all had losses)? You’d think those are much more likely to get shot down by enemy fighters than an F-15.
Is Mach 2.5 fast enough to intercept a MiG-25 flying at Mach 2.8?
What’s the point of designing the F-15 to fly at Mach 2.5, if it’s still possibly not fast enough to catch a MiG-25R on a recce mission (which I presume was the target they had in mind when they designed the F-15 to fly so fast in the first place?)?
Its not fast enough to catch one in a tail chase, but more than enough to intercept it. Armed with missiles, something like Mach 2.3 is maximum speed anyway.
18.01.91 F-15E 88-1689 coded SJ from 4th TFW, piloted by Major Thomas F. Koritz, WSO Major Donnie R. Holland shot down 16miles SW of Basrah. Both aviators KIA. Combat loss officially confirmed by USAF, reason assumed AAA. Show me one single proof, Sens, that this aircraft was not hit by an Iraqi fighter instead.
I think I have read a report from another Eagle driver flying this mission. He said there was flak all over the place and no enemy air activity.
And the Syrian claims you posted: If the plane makes it back to base, it hardly counts as a kill. We all know it takes an Eagle to kill an Eagle as in the case of a Japanese pilot who accidentally shot down another F-15 with a sidewinder (pilot ok) 😉
I was probably in second grade. Cant remember anything, the first war I remember was Yugoslavia in 95.
MKopack, interesting stuff, thanks for your stories. I have one question though: why are you called the ‘Forgotten 1000’?
The F-15 goes Mach 2.5 because that was a requirement, namely to counter the MiG-25. Without that, the Eagle would most likely be a ~M2.3 fighter too.
And while Mach 2.5 was not useful for combat, speeds of more than Mach 2 were actually reached quite often.
