What could “Personally” be sad about her flying?
I really cannot for the life of me understand the mentality of some people? What could be better than 1 flying lancaster? Two flying lancasters?
There are several in museums dotted around the country and the rest of the world.
Imho when you own an aircraft, its your choice as to what you do with it, wether you want to let the public play in it or not is your choice.
Any aviation enthusiast would be over the bloody moon that we will be graced by the presence of another lancaster over UK skies.
People astound me sometimes
Hi
Likewise when people have an opinion it’s THEIR right to express THEIR opinion.
people astound me…..
that they always want to risk flying old un-replaceable aircraft.

Hi
A shame it is not going to be restored, hopefully in the future a german or norwegian museum will find one then we will get a fully restored example.

Hi
Could be my imagination, but in the video, on the tail of the aircraft, it appears the libyan air force markings have been painted out.

as dave allan used to say

Hi Gerry,
Many thanks for the reply and info.
To impose one last time, does he mention when he flew the spitfire, or was it an un-official flight, also his replacement log book, does he have any hours on any other twin in 40/41,( blenheim/oxford ?).
It was a great shame the way that his original logbook was lost, I recall he was still annoyed at them.
cheers
Jerry
Hi Jerry,
Thanks for your reply.
His logbook shows his whirlwind hours as 68. However this is only from the period August 1940 to March 11th 1941 when he had a bad accident.
Frustratingly our interests are almost the opposite. I was interested in his time with B Flight during the Battle of Britain.
I will see if I can get the total after March 1941 and let you know.
Cheers
Gerry
Hi Gerry,
If I remember rightly, there should be no more whirlwind hours,I will definitely be intrested if he had any,as I recall he told me he went (I think) as an instructor to an OTU. ( was it blenheims or beaufighters ? )
cheers
Jerry
Hi
Found one of my notes, he mentioned hurricanes in aug/sep, but no combats……
……. later post 263 Sqn mentions flying spitfires, but I never found anything out about those then,( my interest was whirlwinds) and I can’t find out anything now.
Does his replacement log quote his whirlwind hours ?
I just realised it was almost 70 yrs to the date of his whirlwind crash 11 mar 41
Cheers
Jerry
Hi
I spoke with him many years ago,a great guy, i will try to find my notes, and see if there is anything there.
cheers
Jerry
The second prototype crashed only a mile from my house, little chance of a rebuild there as it cartwheeled over the field and hoovered up by the RAF recovery crew .
Hi
There used to be parts that were recovered from this and were on display in a small museum.
cheers
Jerry
……there where from memory 11 of them ….
Hi
To be historically correct there were at least 22 recorded presentation aircraft, research at the NA, etc, will provide the documentation that proves this number.
cheers
Jerry
Alternatively, anyone know any wealthy Argentinians?
Hi
Or one from bolivia or Uruguay, or Columbia, or Fiji, or the other fellowships there were many bellows whirlwinds.
It is also possible that there may have been a pride of yeovil II & III.
In total there were at least 22 presentation whirlwinds,( from my research )
cheers
Jerry
Hi
I think from memory, at the time of the incident they were flying typhoons, not whirlwinds.
The replica (263) HE one side and (137) SF on the other sounds good.
But to me, it should be just roundels & fin flash, to remember all the units who flew & all who worked on the whirlwind.
cheers
Jerry
I was thinking it looked a bit out of proportion did not twig it was Welkin
the old age thing must be catching
Hi
Yeah sorry, mouse trouble, the drawing is actually of a cross between the whirlwind and the welkin, although it is actually neither,it was once speculated that it was the merlin whirlwind with extended wings and extended fuselage.
Because on the Welkin the cockpit is different, the tailplane is in a different position, tail is a different shape, fuselage is longer and engine nacelles are different, basically in this drawing, they are more like the whirlwind.
cheers
Jerry
Hi
Sorry added a wrong picture, the first welkin design ?, It actually gives a good idea of what the merlin whirlwind would have looked like, as the differences between it and the welkin are quite different
I will try to upload the actual picture I was going to tonight, old age creeping on..
cheers
Jerry;)
