    Hi
When we moved into the house, I found a couple of ali 5’x3’x3′ plant troughs,’built aircraft style’, I still haven’t got around to trying to identify them more, seemed to be some sort of stamp visible when I first looked at them.
The other half has agreed to me moving the plants out sometime, and then I can identify the metal further.
    Cheers

    Hi
Wish I could find the link, the guy in the USA used to build them in his yard & driveway, as a hobby, then donate them to museums, He did not use moulds, but scaled up modelling plans, and they were a one off each time.
    cheers

    Hi
Nowhere for me to put one, although there is plenty of wood here..
But I must admitt I did toy with the idea of one of those 1:1 fibreglass models, that that guy did in the US for those museums, think one was a 163 comet, can’t recall the other ones.
Maybe someone here remebers who did them ?
    cheers

    Hi
I am still thinking it would be a good idea for someone to finish ray’s work and complete a wooden whirlwind.
The experience gained might be very valuable before someone started cutting metal, and maybe a project that could be easily achieved.
    cheers

    Hi

I have now had it confirmed by a couple of different sources including one at Westlands apparantly circa 1960 the aircraft remains got dug up and scrapped localy.

Strangely they must have been the only company in the 60’s that worried about enviromental issues…

Apparantly one engine was used for some sort of test purposes .

I was told it was a blade test rig for a helicopter, apparently the engine was in store a one time.

Just a random but have you tried a request in the local yeovil newspaper, they were very helpful to me many years ago.
    Cheers

    Hi
I unfortunately never knew which one it was, in those days I didn’t know about serials…
In later research I assumed it was either a spare from westlands ( due to the helicopter link between RN and westlands) or one from the dartmoor pair.
Unfortunately both RNEC Manadon at Plymouth and my relative are both long gone..
    cheers

    Hi Stu,
I will try to find the notes for the one guy I can quote.
The other I can’t quote fully at the moment, as it was part of the deal of him telling me, maybe sometime in the future, after he has taken his last flight…..
    Cheers

    …….
So are all those Whirlwind pilot’s stories about the Whirly being a “Gentlemens Aeroplane” untrue ……..

    Hi
I must admitt, amongst the whirlwind pilots I spoke to, two said it was a b***** dangerous aircraft to fly and they were glad when they had stopped flying them.

    Hi
I always heard different stories, but all involved it being buried, the photo of the aircraft after engine removal for a rotor blade test rig, shows the aircraft in a sad state, but pretty much intact.
The most likely one I heard was that it is near a stream and westlands don’t want it touched as it was their dumping ground and would cause enviromental issues.
Good luck, I would suggest a google earth search first for likely spots before approaching them.
    cheers
