Hi
Just my thoughts…
Perhaps in the days now of PC and with the UK no longer being ‘an island’ and being part of the EU.
A small addition should be made to the memorial.
So it not only remembers those of bomber command killed & missing, but also all those killed during the campaign.
After all there were a lot of civilians killed in europe, and now in with the economic turmoils of europe it is time to join together not highlight past differences.
As it has been said often they gave their lives for our freedom, and the freedom of europe.

‘sits back and finds flak jacket…’
Hi
Sad end to a fine ship, but probably better than having her rotting away somewhere.
Pity she wasn’t being scrapped in the UK then some parts may have been saved for display.

The ID models were the product of a friend of mine and he did indeed produce all his own masters etc. When the owner retired he sold on the moulds to a third party (not Combat) who did virtually nothing with them . They have since been sold again and some are being updated and re-released. However it’s possible not all the old subjects will appear. I believe some were subject to unauthorised copying.
John.
Hi
As they say I stand corrected, apoligies to your friend.:o
So I now have to buy a combat models kit as it is different from the ID models one..

We have visited the area where the aircraft fell and its bloody dangerious bog land, so boogy infact we decided not to venture too deep, Got put off with the ground moving! had quite a few leads from a newspaper to their location. Most likely the reason why the pilots were posted missing for some time!
.
Hi
The pilots were missing for such a long time, because at the time they didn’t know where they crashed, the survivng pilot of the flight, didn’t really know where he was.( nice guy to talk with, great memory, not sure if he is still around )
First location was gained apparently when a horse rider found one of the pilots in march ’41 on the moor,(hence the a/c SOC dates),I personally never found any info on when they found the other pilot, both are buried at exeter cemetry.

dont get too carried away, first you have to locate the whirlwinds and i dont think anyone has actually found them otherwise there would have been a recovery attempted long ago. I know approximatly where they are but dont fancy the idea of walking accross a very soft peat bog
Hi
I know of at least two people who have located the main site, As I understand it there are three points of impact,(for the two aircraft), but I will be very suprised if either released any info.
Recovery has as i understand it, has not been done due to the terrain.
To give an example of the type terrain.
a recovery unit went into a site, using an american half track,it got stuck in the bog, they returned the next day with more help to dig it out , but it had sunk without a trace.
A different site… an MU located and dug out an engine, they returned the next day, and despite digging could not locate it.
Both these sites are in less boggy areas than the whirlwinds.
I remember originals plans for a reccie in the 70’s, snow shoes were on our equipment list as a method of getting to the location over the bog.

I quick Google search finds that a company call ID Models did produce a 1:32 vacuform model, once again any modeller have contact details ?
Paul
Hi
ID models is no longer in existence, the whirlwind moulds/dies were sold to combat model in USA.
As I understand it ID models did not produce the moulds/dies themselves, but purchased them from a modeller.

Even India has a ship to land theirs on
Hi
I wonder if they will take the opportunity to purchase some cheap ones, it might save a few from the scrapyard.

Hi
Well at least the spanish, italians and US still have their versions, so some can still be seen flying.

Hi
Nice screen, It reminds me, I was to late on one a few years back, and also that someone was doing a cockpit replica in metal.

Jerry
Hi
One problem you may find is that doors have been opened over the years for various research for quite a few whirlwind projects.
So now it might possibly be difficult to get the info, except from the main sources, i.e. RAFM,NA/PRO,etc.

Hi
Or why not bury a crate, those harley’s in devon were buried crated.
I personally think there would be plenty of empty hangars and nissan type huts everywhere, and a crate would be of little value.
One day,one of these buried a/c stories,on the law of averages will be true, but not probably this one.

And then some bright spark, not involved in the ten year build, would probably stall it in low level aerobatics on the airshow circuit , and we would have to start all over again anyway!
Did I say that:D
Guy
Hi
Well I am just waiting for the barrage of replies from fellow board members…….:dev2: then again if it was a mossie…

There is nothing whatever to say that the Mosquito, once restored, would not return to Canada in the future. Bruce
Hi
I personally think there would be a similar probability of me winning the lottery.
I think the canadian hurricane is still in the UK, as is the bolingbroke / blenheim, and i think wasn’t the old strathalan lanc a canadian.
