I thought that was a DH Hornet – equally as lamentable of course.
Hi
a relative of mine was at manadon at the time,
thought the hornet was down at the old civil defence building, stoke.

Pilots details was registered at Lynford when bodies found (this normally happens in the same locallity/registration district) … The Bovey Tracey location is based on what 3rd pilot reported.. But they were all lost at time descending through cloud and thats probably why they hit the ground…. So location was speculative even in 1940
Hi
Interesting the registration, does this give the date ?
bovey tracy and lynford are both well away from where I understood they crashed.

Bog + Magnesium alloy construction = no show at Legends :diablo:
The Whirly is a bit of a Holy Grail on this forum (with TSR-2 why/what ifs) but unless one pitches out of a (moisture controlled) barn somewhere, I think its going to be tiny bits and pieces.
Hi
personal theory only,
But my bet for a holy grail would be the florida area.
P6994 went to a scrappie there and the peregrines went into a speedboat, after the USN finished with it.
who knows it/they may still be around.
( for example last year I worked on two ex ww2 U boat engines being used a generators here in canada.)
But if the raf hadn’t turned down the one offered to them in the early 70’s, we would have one. ( burnt at an RNEC Manadon family day fire fighting demo)

What about the long discussed rumour about the dumping of G-AGOI (and other twin engined single seater Westland types) on the Westland Aerodrome at Yeovil following some fire training. The Pergrines were used for other purposes around the factory IIRC
Has anybody actually followed it up – or is it another of those aeroplane urban myths – like the Bristol Bombay in east Africa?
Hi
rumour has it a/c still there but would have enviro impact if dug.
engines used then went to atc unit then scrappies..

Are the sites war graves?
Hi
Nope both pilots buried exeter, but a pilot was not found for about three months, hence then location of a/c found.

Jerry
Hi
a delicate subject always,
but there does seem to be times when ‘ wargraves’ are recovered.
admittedly an old example ..
the mary rose
‘ the skeletons on the Mary Rose were exceptionally well preserved because the ship foundered in a thick layer of mud, which sealed the remains and preserved them in place.’
HMS Victory
‘Have any human remains been found on the site so far?
Yes, part of a skeleton, including a skull and other bones, were discovered while exploring the site. No human remains were recovered, and those exposed were carefully re-buried by the ROV. All operations at the site were then immediately halted until this discovery was reported to the Ministry of Defence. Investigation of the site was resumed only after the MOD agreed that further fieldwork was necessary to prove the identity of the wreck.’
Interestingly the victory is reported to have approximately 4 tons of gold on it.
this link has the references above and details of the sharing arrangement with the UK government

a ww2 example HMS edinburgh… gold

Jerry, do you know what else R-R have concerning Whirly material?
Stuart…
Hi Stuart,
just pulled out my R-R Stuff,
Battle mentioned by them was N2110 used from Oct ’39 to Oct ’40.
And Heinkel 70 G-ADZF, until grounded 3.3.39.
Interestingly, I had forgot that they refered to the peregrine MkI and four MkII engines, in the notes.
New lad at R-R ?
What happened to Peter Kirk ? he was very helpful.
Cheers

It is usually stated, I think, that the only aircraft other than the Westland Whirlwind to be fitted with the Pergrine was the He 70.
Hi
Also one other Gloster F9/37 peregrine engined.

I understand several Fairey Battles were used as engine test beds during the war, with-Fairey P.24, Napier Dagger VIII, Sabre, Bristol Taurus to name a few.
I’ve read somewhere that one was used as a test bed for the Whirlwind R-R Peregrine…
Truth or should I cut down on the medication…;)
Hi
Yes, a Battle was used, unfortunately R-R no longer has a photo, I have seen a scan of the HE-70 fit ( below), but none of the battle.
I think I recall an airfix magazine conversion many years ago.

jerry
there is an exe battle photo in flight archive but never had time to search more.

Hi All,
Many thanks for all the replies.

I’m no Beaufighter expert but I think the rear blister was modified with a framework when the gun was installed, and had a quite distinct profile from the non-gun blister.
Hi
In photos, the VIc used by 252 / 272 Sqn had modified canopies but no frame work can be seen in the canopy.
The mod was purely the rear perspex was cut away and a gun mounted in the rear to enable the gun to be operated, otherwise what appears to be a standard canopy,(not the later style type).

Beaufighter mk X had a .303 gun in the rear blister
Hi
Likewise some VIc carried them as well, they had a modified rear canopy.(i.e. 252 / 272 Sqn ).

An aviation-related forum may not necessarily be the best place to start your search.
Hi
Maybe, maybe not…..:D
But I now have a link to start searching with ….:D
Many thanks.

……I’ll see you on the other forum…..
Hi
Out of interest, other forum.
Any chance of a link, not in anyway stating I am leaving this one, but I tend to browse a few forums, or is the term ‘lurking’.
