I’ve not got a picture to hand but it does look very similar to an ‘Air Dryer’ as fitted in several British aircraft as part of the auto pilot and bomb aiming systems.

I’m a member of the Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre and it’s an area we are keen to learn more about too as there doesn’t seem to be much information regarding the unit. I’ve checked our archive and apart from the midair collision with Waddington based ‘Nick the Nazi neutraliser’ and Les Munro being the OC we have nothing.

Does Kew hold an Operations book for them?

I recently visited the Fleet Air Arm museum and the Bovington Tank museum and would put them both in the top 5 museums with Duxford and Hendon to visit while you are here. Number 5 would be HMS Belfast but the newly revamped IWM has truly dropped down the ratings since they ruined it.
