I have withdrawn with the parting opinion Nuke power in safe Brit hands is the sol.

I have withdrawn with the parting opinion – Nuke power in safe British hands is the solution with supplementary smaller scale alternative cost effective schemes for areas such as outlying islands, those with ideal South facing walls, etc

    Enjoy the continuing discussion.:D

Pre Auto Union there was the DKW, have even seen them race on an old airfield

Pre Auto Union there was the DKW, have even seen them race on an old airfield. My childhood neighbour had a brand new Auto Union as they owned the agency and he used to race it. They looked so unstable racing round corners in actual races. If I remember correctly it had a column shift.

Is it more expensive to create nearly straight underground

Is it more expensive to create nearly straight underground tracks than have twisting (avoiding beauty spots) slower tracks that make the project economically non-viable in contrast to leaving well alone?

It may also cause less environmental objections.

The project could go in phases. Geology experts help please:confused: e.g. maybe starting Aberdeen to Glasgow and or Edinburgh.

Question please: What is the total length of the entire London Underground if placed end to end, line by line? (Granted it began in Victorian times but it can be a benchmark for total track distance covered)

I am not knocking any of this but it’s not getting the large commercial backing

    But thats just my opinion.

There is so much we can do with rivers, and e.g. again in Europe – France, Germany, etc the canals and rivers are the main transport routes for low perishables and it works.I have rowed on the Moselle, Rhine, Meuse, etc and the size of the barges is great in tandem often. The bargee even has his car on board.
In Scotland they have the Falkirk wheel, all small scale great ideas and never get proliferated.
Look at how much fossil fuel we would save in road haulage costs and clear the congested motorways of many whacking great trucks.
With regards electricity generation and the use of rivers for transport so many environmental issues seem to get in the way the moment it comes up.
It’s not just your opinion and there are many including myself that share the same opinion but we are all in a minority and shall I put it “simply p..sing in the wind” as sadly the “heavies” don’t buy into these ideas.:(
You lucky man to have seen the Hoover Dam for real. Maybe someday for me too.:D
You are steam buff and I grew up in country with steam and then had a great thrill when in the mid 1980s I was on a special of the first re-run of the West Highland line operating steam all the way except in Glasgow where the overhead electric power lines were. It was mega to smell that coal and get some grit in ones hair – made me nostalgic for my childhood days. TV crews in helicopters buzzing the train all the way.

We all have seen or used small scale examples but…

I think they do a 12v version, for use when camping or caravaning next to a
    river.

    Some more at –
    http://www.therenewableenergycentre.co.uk/wave-and-tidal-power/

We all have seen or used small scale examples but when extrapolated they seem to get no further for large scale implementation.

    Waitrose Weekend 30 June 2011 quotes http://www.which.co.uk/solar
Feed in Tariff (FIT) 43.3p feed in tariff OR free solar panels from ‘rent a roof’ – use and sell excess.
Requirements – roof or wall that faces within 90 degrees of south not overshadowed by trees or buildings, strong roof and planning permission.

A couple quoted say they spent £11,000 on 11 solar panels with a RIE of 10% which means a pay back in 10 years. Expected saving 50% in electricity bills.

How many can afford this or have the location for it?

Case in point – at my Uni there is a massive external South facing wall, covered entirely (see attachment) with solar panels put in many years ago, but no one any longer even talks about it although there is a LED display panel near the reception counter which displays some numbers. It cannot have been a success as it hasn’t proliferated to the other local Universities who have plenty of South facing walls.

I have acknowledged that all of us will be looking in the dark for St Peter

Only if it makes the Moon vanish.

I have acknowledged that all of us will be looking in the dark for St Peter as not just the moon but a lot else catastrophic will have happened then and as the song goes “Knock Knock Knocking on heaven’s door”:D
