    1 and 2 real 3 fake

    Hi tenthije

    (1) Hamburg airport – ATC to blame for not requesting a holding pattern until airport cross wind runaway was opened. Scary stuff if the guys on the ground aren’t making it safe for pilots and pax. Hats off to the flight crew for doing their utmost and saving a catastrophe especially since the wingtip glanced the ground.
    Do you know when ?

    (2) Kai Tak with the famous striped marker that pilots have to aim to use to make the sharp turn to line up for finals.
I guess this is pre 1998 since they have an improved international airport at HK

    (3) Sounds as if MSN don’t screen or question the integrity of the video material they publish.

Does not say when exactly when the data was collated but the article is dated 06 December 2010.

Also it excludes the figures for Boeing 737-900 model series

    (3) My reason for posting – surely just on caption United can possibly sue MSN

    (3) My reason for posting – surely just on caption United can possibly sue MSN

If its deliberate camera tricks the damages could be severe if United took up the challenge of legal procedings against MSN.

Apart from the noise of camera shutters the only dialogue I can hear is the mention of similarity to Kai Tak

Aha! you hit it right on the head there Sandy:D

Hence my thread which opens with figures stating which are firm orders as opposed to MOUs-
A320NEO orders – anyone keeping an exact tally?” otherwise knowing the less informed or in reality ‘crap’ journalists who never dig below a marketing statement press release count and report on some of the same old MOU/promises of a few years back as if they were new orders. In fact some of these older MOUs haven’t even become firm as yet.

Here are some pre Paris Air Show facts

Here are some pre Paris Air Show facts and news report

    Fleet profile for AA
    http://www.aa.com/i18n/amrcorp/corporateInformation/facts/fleet.jsp

    Of their total fleet of 619, 124 are Boeing 757 and 247 are MD80 that makes 371 possibly for replacement/renewal/refurbishment (B 757s).
100 A320NEO s is less than a third of the total of 371 unless it excludes the replacement of Boeing 757s and purely are replacements for half the MD80s

An Inside Look at American Airline’s Fleet Renewal Plan
    http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/06/02/idUS124695115620110602

“…..American plans to retire at least 25 MD-80s in 2011 and it is not exactly known when all MD-80s will be out of service. American will receive an additional 54 Boeing 737s with Sky Interior over the next two years

“…The airline plans to upgrade their older 737s to have newer seating and larger bins. In May 2010, American began updating its existing fleet of Boeing 737s. The retrofit includes the installation of new seats, new cabin interiors, updated in-flight entertainment systems and more storage throughout the aircraft. The retrofit is slated for completion by the first quarter of 2013. ….”

“…is also in the process of updating all Boeing 757s …The 757 aircraft enhancements began in August 2010 and have a planned completion of December 2015. As of early May 2011, American has completed upgrades to ten 757s….”

Interesting A320NEOs projected date is 2015.

“…will also be increasing their fleet of Boeing 777s with the addition of five 777-300ERs with deliveries slated for 2012 and 2013….”

I personally have faith that like many airlines the move towards Airbus may either be to encourage better deal making towards AA by Boeing or simply wishing to go for a strategy of not ‘putting all their eggs in one basket’.

That does not make AA anti Boeing and I can wait for Q3 post 787 delivery announcements on Boeing’s take on a likely competitor or comeback on the A320NEO.

At present in a damp UK June (in Edinburgh anyway), we are simmering under the only ‘rays of sunshine’ from the Paris Air Show care of Airbus. Civil aviation profits hype alone doesn’t make Boeing survive but instead their diverse cash flow from multiple aerospace sectors. The civil aviation cash flow for Boeing should pick up in 2012 with post 787 deliveries commencing Q3 2011.

    Thanks for sharing

Le Bourget 2011 – Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose, or for those that don’t speak French: The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Thanks tenthije for sharing and even with the weather I wish I had been there. Farnborough 2012 and Paris 2013 to wait for.

Was there something special as a reason or did I miss something announced in the press previously as to why Boeing disappeared prior to the public days?

Are Boeing worried? Probably. I’d be more concerned if they were not!
Do Boeing have to respond? Yes, but the key question is when and what with.

I fully support what Sandy says. Any major manufacturer in any industry with any commercial ‘savy’ would be extremely foolish not keep up to date with it’s primary competitor’s proposed developments and not show concern within it’s own R&D teams.

The timing of the response from Boeing usually has always been when they have a fully fledged product to speak about.

They hope to announce some plans in Q1 2011 and that will be a full quarter after the ‘plastic pig’ is delivered to customers in Q3.

From all these sales figures have we got a final breakdown of firm orders

From all these sales figures have we got a final breakdown of firm orders

In my opening post I differentiated between firm and non firm orders.

Otherwise an MOU (or similar) in the future, can be simply ‘gone’ usually without too heavy a penalty (or none) especially if a carrier simply vanishes (financially – bust or change of trading name in some distant land, etc)

The other aspect to consider is what if any of these orders have a full or partial contra trading promissory built in formally or informally? By this I mean where part or whole assembly/manufacture are done in a none European location or a large proportion of materials guaranteed a purchase from a previously non supplying country. The socio economic shift for Europe can be severe primarily in loss of employment.

I am happier to wait for Farnborough 2012 and see if the figures remain the same or higher or if there will be a comeback from other manufacturers i.e. Boeing and Bombardier who may take back some of the high ground held by Airbus.

Otherwise in the meantime I do congratulate Airbus

I thought of the armed forces weekend prep

It might have been something for the Armed Forces weekend.
In the pics section there are the Red arrows, a single Black coloured Hawk along with the BBMF taken at Turnhouse on Saturday.

If it had been WNW of the location you gave, that would just about put it on a line with the old runway at Turnhouse, though that is pretty rarely used these days.

NNW takes you straight over Edinburgh castle.

I thought of the armed forces weekend prep. The runway rarely used/older 12/30 at EDI could have handled a Hawk and in fact it is a straight line from the location I described.

What is a mystery is on most Fridays at 19:00 hrs runway 06/24 at EDI is quite busy with civilian traffic.
I would have thought it risky to have a RAF hawk coming in on 12/30 instead of joining the finals on to 06/24. The flight line described on Friday 24 June meant it was most likely going for a landing on 12/30 as for it to join an approach for 06/24 it was way too low and heading in the wrong direction unless it banked sharply to port as it got near the runway 06/24 and landed further forward in comparison to a normal touchdown point for 06/24.

In making this manoeuvre it would have had to risk being very low over a very busy by-pass, roundabout and many key banking sector buildings in the Gyle business complexes.

It seems the likely events though.

Hawk possibly but wrong flight path for Leuchars or Lossie

My guess would be a hawk on the way to leuchars or Lossiemouth from valley although they would both bee NNE, unless they were going further west to avoid going over the firth or detouring around Edingburgh? they do have a habit of flying them extremely low. I remember the holidays i used to go to oasis holiday village and they would come screaming overhead a couple of hundred feet above the treeline.

also was at a gliding club in Lancashire once near warton and a typhoon flew directly over a tow line about 400 feet up as a glider was making ready for launch

Hawk possibly but wrong flight path for Leuchars or Lossie as it would take it smack low over EDI runway 06/24 which is a busy airport at 19:00 hrs on most Fridays.

As you say the flight path would ideally have been NNE not NNW for either RAF bases.

I wondered the same – routine QR ops would anyway be over the N’Sea

It would be unusual to be airborne 1900 hrs on a Friday!

I wondered the same – routine QR ops would anyway be over the N’Sea and at 19:00 hrs on Friday 24 June was extremely strange.

It was so low and the flight line from the change in sound was across the A702 and A701 (in that order) at Straiton in a NNW heading.

In 3 years it is the first time I have heard anything similar and a civillian would not fly at that speed and with that sound.

I think we can safely discount UFOs as I am sure by now the nesspapers would have been jumping.

Funeral for Florida plane crash siblings

Funeral for Florida plane crash siblings

    http://heritage.scotsman.com/scotland/Funeral-for-Florida-plane-crash.6790335.jp

“HUNDREDS of mourners gathered yesterday for the funeral of a brother and sister from Edinburgh who died in a plane crash in Florida.

Around 80 people, dressed in colourful clothes as requested by the family, lined the streets as the coffins arrived at Mortonhall Crematorium in Edinburgh, a short drive from where their parents Elaine and Thomas live.

Around 200 mourners attended the celebration of life service, which was led by humanist celebrant Anne Roberts.

In a tribute released ahead of the service by Buckinghamshire New University, in High Wycombe, Ms Beattie’s course co-ordinator Shari Peyami said: “Carly had an unbounded enthusiasm and dedication to becoming a pilot. Her lively personality and passion for flying made her popular with all of her colleagues and instructional staff.”
