The 4th video has some clear thoughts and messages –
“Did AF447 weather radar sensors fail to penetrate a small storm disguising a much more severe storm behind the small storm ?”
“Auto thrust down to 76 in auto pilot mode was very likely to help reduce stress to airframe in storm”
“Was supercooled water at 35,000 ft the cause of the pitot tubes freezing ?”
“When auto pilot disengaged during multiple warnings (airspeed errors, etc) on an A330 the problem is that there is no manual movement of throttle levers during auto thrust. In multiple automation failure and multiple alarms, the flight crew cannot visually recognise the approximate thrust/revs of the engines by glancing at the throttle levers. They have to take manual control and move the throttle levers. Pilots in many other incidents have been known to be slow to take full manual control including movement of the throttle levers.”
“Pilots are so used to the auto pilot being in control that they have little experience of extreme conditions in manual control. Extreme conditions cannot be simulated in most flight simulators.”
“The flight crew may have come close to saving the aircraft but may have stalled again at an altitude that could not prevent the aircraft hitting the water.”
These theories extolled in the videos were put together by a credible group of international experts prior to the FDR and CVR being retrieved. They used the wreckage retrieved in the first 5 days after the crash.
Remains of 104 of the 228 people killed have arrived in France
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-13792195
“Remains of 104 of the 228 people killed when an Air France jet crashed into the Atlantic in 2009, leaving no survivors, have arrived in France.
A ship carrying three containers of wreckage and a fourth bearing human remains from the ocean bed docked in the south-western port of Bayonne.
The harbour was closed off by the authorities out of respect for bereaved families and friends.”
That leaves just over the half the remains of those who died still unaccounted for and quite a lot of wreckage missing.
Yes as ornaments to a bygone era and safely as static displays only
Can’t they decide to keep these birds purely on looks? 🙂

In fact MO’L is suggesting every passenger have a optimum weight dress code
This is the new stewards uniform, less material means cost saving, as a passenger if you want them to cover up you have to pay extra
In fact MO’L is suggesting every passenger have an optimum weight dress code, in other words ideally fly wearing [a] underpants only for males, [b] bra and panties/thongs only for females and either [a] or [b] or a fig/clover leaf for those unsure of their gender.
In return the passenger can fly for 50p with an option to purchase suitable additional clothing on disembarking from Ryanair at 500% mark up. Well if supermarkets can do 4-500% mark up why not Ryanair?
That way MO’L can put in a few extra standing seats.
MO’L is paying the ‘Drag queenie’ on US Airways a huge premium to help with the marketing promotion at RyanAir. Dressed in RyanAir colurs of course. This includes unlimited free flights while wearing the ‘drag’ outfits.
I guess a Borat Mankini in lurid green may also be acceptable by US Airways.
Who is old enough to remember the title of a film called “Its a Mad Mad Mad Mad World” – this sums up most of the politically correct nonsense happening just now.
I have seen the hype on Airbus web site but how many are firm ?
I have seen the hype on the Airbus web site but how many are firm ?
30 reported firm in my opening of this thread with URL reference.
Are the other 42 firm or simply MOU a wish list at the Paris Air Show or marketing hype by Airbus.
This juggling of the numbers is something both Airbus and many of it’s Asian customers do for mutual publicity (it was challenged a few times on this very forum – see old threads)
Let’s see when 2015 comes and in the meantime there’s Boeing to announce what they plan to do in early 2012 and they ain’t beat by a long shot yet.
The accurate tally is best kept by categorising them as firm, MOU or ‘dreams’ of crazy marketing guys.
Not sure if BEA have made that conclusive a remark as yet but …
Have they said if there was any airframe break-up before impact?
Not sure if BEA have made that conclusive a remark as yet but … there are parts of the wreckage that have not been found along with approximately half the human remains. Salvage work now abandoned indefinitely.
Anything is possible to come out of the BEA investigation and we must wait for the Interim Report in a few weeks followed by an approximate 2 years wait for the final report if on schedule.
Has anyone heard if Honeywell are being proposed for an award
Has anyone heard if Honeywell are being proposed for an award?
Honeywell make/made the FDR and CVR involved in AF447 Airbus A300-200.
I am sure the designers at Honeywell never envisaged requirements of ruggedness of the level encountered by the wreckage of AF447 (including FDR & CVR) at 3900 metres below sea level, at ultra cold temperatures for 2 years in time.
Not sure of average temperature at 3900 metres below Atlantic at the precise location of the AF447 wreckage, but here’s a graph that may give a clue http://www.windows2universe.org/earth/Water/temp.html
In my opinion Honeywell deserve an award for consciously/unconsciously building/manufacturing a model of FDR and CVR that were/are so well ruggedised.
Keep up the excellent work chaps.
Hi benhongh
Sound sarcastic if you like it does not matter. I am used to heated brainstorming sessions in most of my working life and usually the team stayed professional and friends (unlike many politicians)
I have used it effectively and that is all that matters. It isn’t being proposed for military aircraft flying at supersonic speeds with massive after burn accelerations. It is being suggested as an absolute fail safe for a civil airliner in a crisis.
Please see my posts with diagrams 11th June 2011, 23:48 and 12th June 2011, 01:15 just preceding your post of 12th June 2011, 06:26
In my description of the pics in these two posts I have dealt with situations of the plumb line collapsing if the angle exceeds 90 degrees BUT this is very unlikely (China Airlines Boeing 747 which looped the loop a few times yet survived) and anyway if it did the plumb line would simply revert to pointing to the centre of the earth as soon as the angle is below 90 degrees.
Try it for yourself either for real in a cockpit (a piece of thread, a small key and some blu tac will not breach security) or simply build a little model ( a clear plastic fizzy drinks bottle, cut the bottom off, push a pin or needle through the side and attach a piece of short luminous fishing line on the end of which is a small weight. The string and nut should be inside the clear plastic bottle). Unless you propose that the civil airliner in a crisis will continue to accelerate the plumb line (in which case it’s a ‘gonner’) will recover very quickly in your model if you simply execute gentle manoeuvres (which is all a captain in full control independent of fly by wire of a stricken airliner will try to do to save his aircraft)
I used a plumb line in a tandem 2 seater trainer Chipmunk (tail wheeler) which had a carb. that permitted minimal aerobatic flying including inverted flying for short periods. The plumb line simply recovered after the instructor came out of inverted flying as a demo.
I found it a great help in tail wheel aircraft where one used to glance out over the side of the cockpit to gauge exact height above terra firma when into last few seconds of touching the ground with main undercarriage to avoid snapping/damaging the tail wheel.
The absolute fact is that the plumb always points to the centre of the earth if there is no massive acceleration involved and any gentle change of velocity (causing minimal acceleration) will not matter as the plumb line will shift in academic terms slightly but not technically of significance as it would still be pointing to the centre of the earth give or take a few degrees. In a stricken airliner in crisis these few degrees can be worried about once land is in sight and ground ATC/radar control takes fuller control.
Shall do just refining my improvised working model
Hi fah619
Yes I shall do, just refining my improvised working model. Got to try to obtain some luminous fishing line from a specialist fishing supplies shop. Also I wish to get a concise description together to support my improvisation.
At present I am up to my eyes with putting together suitable job applications [having just graduated with a BA (Hons) Accounting], interview preparation and trying to resolve where in UK to relocate to so that I can feed my ‘passions’ for rowing/sculling and airshows/aircraft while ‘chipping’ away at my professional accounting exams. In Scotland apart from RAF Leuchars there is no big airshow and it means an expensive journey each time by air to LHR to then connect with the big airshows in UK.
Thanks for the suggestion. I shall post and revert to you with a message when I do.

Extremely sad news
Extremely sad news.
Condolences to those bereaved and to those lost may you RIP.
Boeing are far from being beaten
Hi KabirT
Boeing are far from being beaten
Yes I agree and it’s good for the European economy but Boeing are far from beaten yet.
In a few weeks the ‘Plastic Pig’ goes to ANA, then there will be a resurgence of Boeing’s successes leading to as they say an announcement (likely early 2012) about their plans regarding a strong competitor to the A320Neo.
They may(more than likely) have an all new composite design in their labs and wait on the Dreamliner going safely into service as the starting gun to go public with it.
Its swings and roundabouts and Boeing are slower but also steady in the wake of the current economic situation. Good investors prefer stability rather than a roller coaster ride.
They will be both (Boeing and Airbus) in the frame for many years to come and there is room for both.
I wish I was in Paris right now (usually would be) but have just graduated as a ‘bean counter’ and must go back in to a full time job first.

“Strathclyde Police feed delayed Ryanair passengers”
“Police had to calm down air passengers stuck on the runway of Prestwick Airport by buying them water and chocolate.
The 168 people on board the Ryanair flight bound for Girona, Spain, became agitated after a six-hour wait…..”
Strathclyde Police are like most Scottish Police forces ‘genteel folk’ and they became Ryanair’s ‘water bearers’.
Interesting the Spanish connection then too.
And the Indian railways were streaks ahead of any LCC in India
Now defunct Indian carrier Damania from the early 90s was fined and eventually had to shut shop after an incident where 2 passengers were taken standing between BOM and DEL.
So they were clearly ahead of Ryanair. 😀
And the Indian railways were streaks ahead of any LCC in India just take a peek at these images http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=indian+commuters+on+trains&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1024&bih=477
I’d say a ‘moving sculpture’ of Indian railway commuters adorning trains. Sure beats washing the trains down on the outside, as the commuters garments will clean the carriages and engine.
In comparison what’s one, two or a ‘bakers dozen’ LCC passengers standing, maybe even on their heads, while the aircraft is in flight including take off and landing. All part of a busy day.
In fact I think MO’L drafted the press release for the Times of India
Standing passengers. Sounds good for Ryanair.
In fact I think MO’L drafted the press release for the Times of India.
It’s his style of nonsensical publicity.
