I recall reading that Hiroshima was chosen because it was relatively unscathed from the firebombing that had decimated other cities e.g. Tokyo.
Regards,
Dan
Just remembered the Tokyo firebombing as well while I was washing the dishes… that damage would of course have eliminated Tokyo’s ‘usefulness’ as a target. Another thought would be that to preserve Tokyo as (I think) the largest population centre and seat of power as well as the Emperor would aid greatly in ensuring a reasonable and efficient ceasfire and transition of power.
Hiroshima was a major Naval city (basing/industry) if I recall correctly, and again IIRC, Osaka was to be the target on the 9th but target visibility forced the alternate of Nagasaki.

Vigilante for SOC
Just cruising by the P.I. tonight on GE and finally found this baby. One RA-5 Vigilante (as per your placeholder on the runway at Cubi) and as a bonus, here’s a pic I took of her in 2000.

Canada (I think)
1945 – Meteor (4 for trials)
1948 – Vampire
1950 – Sabre
1951 – T-33
1953 – CF-100 Canuck
1953 – Comet
1955 – Banshee
Canada, yes 1945 – (only 3 Meteors in total) 2 F.3s (EE311) … 1 F.4 (RA421) added in 1948
by coincidence..
I’d like to just say thanks for the clarification of the markings…. by sheer coincidence I spotted the same markings on a camouflaged dHC Beaver in a book this morning and had been wondering whose it was.
thanks again
Unit Codes
Nothing definite here, but the following info may be of assistance somehow…
This is quoted from ‘The Eagles in the Nest – Part 1″ a special by Scale Aviation Modeller.
“… when the WL registrations were abolished in October 1939 in favour of the simjpler system which was to endure for the rest of the war. This consised of four letters running in alphabetical sequence form and gave an enormous number of potential combinations. Essentilly, the system ran in alphabetical progression i.e. AA+AA to AA+AZ, then AA+BA to AA+BZ, and so on. Both manufacturers and training units were allocated blocks of letters, amongst which were gaps for security purposes. …”
“In the early days, the first two letters sometimes served to identify units. For instance, PF+?? is believed to have identified aircraft based on the group of airfields to the west of Prague in Czechoslovakia. However, as new aircraft were delivered or transferred, codes became inevitably mixed. …”

I believe the best possible definition is… ‘kit-bashed’ while almost possibly maybe looking sorta like part of something that looks like a ‘Taifun’ or ‘some kinda Junkers’… my money’s on “how many bits from different kits can I use to make something that might look real” – hence the NU+TS codes

A nice collection (seven pages worth) of pics and line-art, including MAMs manufacturer’s model, some hypothetical profiles and a scratch built example. Also includes a 3 view G/A drawing of the HS.802 (681 with Nimrod wing)
HS.681
Just found a site with a couple 3D renderings… the second link also contains a 3-view and a shot of what looks to be a conceptual model on exhibition
I’m not sure that anything more than maybe a prototype GR.5 may have been finished in the ‘tradition’ scheme.
Here’s the back panel from italeri’s early GR.5 kit illustrating their view on the subject (unfortunately its not the full wrap-around green/grey).
…Released as “The Archie Bunker Story” or something similarly daft in the USA…
That might actually make a decent movie, since the Archie Bunker TV character (based on Alf Garnett on BBC’s ‘Til Death Do Us Part’) did serve in the USAAC in Italy during WWII.
“Wait!, We’ve got to go back, I forgot my light meter.”
or
“skipper, can you make another pass, the fellow in the dug-out blinked.”
well, I’m no expert, but my thoughts on this one are as follows…
I think we’re looking at a flight engineer’s position of a single engined type (only one space for a Plenum Chamber Temperature gauge). I’d hazard a guess to say that the Set 1/Set 2 are a ‘redundant’ warning system and there only appears to be one rudder (cover either half – odds or evens – of the ‘dolls eyes’ and you have a complete set of indicators.)
Perhaps a Gannet or something like that.
