just to add an extra descriptive…. having recently stood within 5 metres (without hearing protection) of a Mustang IV on final throttle push prior to shut down… the same ” trans-sonic snap” is quite evident to the attentive listener – albeit in the rather sexy form of a purrr … and I’m not talking about the sexy purr of a Merlin here. The Mustang IV (P-51D) with its considerably paddle-bladed prop – in flat pitch – on the ground, does generate the effect of which we type.

…Con: Mate that is ok but our lo-viz roundels are dark. And I think our planes are going to be delivered in an Olive Green like those C-130H’s and not the Grey like the C-130J’s.
Still not long now till they arrive!
Picky picky picky… with all due respect my friend, I have a sneaking suspicion ’em are gonna be light grey… factory grey is factory grey, and although overseas suppliers may be supplied with official specs… what they deem fit is thier choice… (our gorgeous CC-150 ‘shamu – as I call it) paint job only came along years after entry into servicekeep yer eye’s peeled…. those dark roundel may ‘show up’. The light roundel makes a nice contrast with the dark Southern Cross. Ultimate would be the came tactical camo of the ‘J’ Hercs… just imagine
JJ
Very nice – I’d seen the original Light Grey and Day-Glo, and the two-tone grey before but not that Glossy Grey and Day Glo – she’s beautiful!
Would you happen to have that photo?
This is what I have found.. The profile is from Czech PKR magazine.
As with Suriname, this PC-7 has been seen in the US shortly after being purchased from Surinam. It retains the original camouflage, I have been told. HTH
This is the camo one I have found… very similar to the artwork you posted
hellenic flame revisited??
I’m having another creative moment… there’s blue and white, and some red and maybe an F-16 involved… hmmm, I like it… stay tuned, I’ll be back
JJ
Fantastic! never expected to see them…
I can almost finish that project now – 40 + profiles of PC-7s – every military operator in just about every operational paint scheme.
Photo Wishlist:
PC-7 – Suriname – only 2 delivered and aparently rarely seen before being returned to Europe
PC-7 – Iraq – in Camouflage – only shot I’ve seen, the aircraft is in pieces and the markings are taped out.
Then I might be able to put this silly infatuation away.
and just because… I snapped these two of Richmond back in ’98… I counted 12 – maybe 13 – Hercs and 2 707s on the ramp that evening. and that doesn’t include the one doing touch ‘n goes.
Photos taken on ‘the fly’ – in some hurry to meet wife’s friends back in Sydney for dinner… priorities eh?

for Ja and Pale….
a generic Aussie C-17 with genuine Aussie landscape (I know – it looks like my maple leaf, but it really is a ‘Roo in the roundel)
JJ
Very nice… especially the early JP

Ah oui… le CC-177 ‘Maitre du monde’ avec les Forces canadiennes
I’m still giggling like a kid… and Trneton’s only about a 2 hour drive for me
You are a good man contrail 😀
ps if Australians are from Australia why aren’t Canadians from Canadia? :p
I don’t really know… I was in a shop in Grafton a few years ago and one of the locals told his buddy I was from Canadia…
I dont try to understand it… maybe we actually live in Canad… or maybe we’re Canadars, or Canadese… oh the joys of the ongoing hunt for a national identity
Realizing that the 177 is ‘out of sequence’ but the ’17 is just too popular to lose. – But what the hell, they kept the 18 with CF-188. Indeed the Falcon was the 117.
… any chance of an RAAF version? 😉
As the saying goes… ‘easy as pie’ I’ll even see if I can throw an Aussie background in, I think I’ve got a couple nice air-to-ground shots over the ‘Red Centre’… I’ll post it up on the Aussie Transport thread tomorrow sometime.
JJ
I just couldn’t help myself… a couple Photoshop minutes this afternoon and they’re here already…
yup, the shockwave on the advancing blade – most noticeable when the aircraft is approaching… the sound is considerably lessened in the rear aspect when say the aircraft if flying away from you. The intensity is lessed but still there in the 412 with the smaller diameter 4-bladed rotor… more of a whirring ‘plopping’ sound – I can still hear the Can Force Griffons coming for miles… even at altitude
I think its more to do with relative speed… I remember reading somewhere, of reports back in the 40s about the Tempest IIs… flying close to 500 and the prop tips going supersonic was the equivalent to hanging a brick wall on the nose of the aircraft…
I believe part of this is what eventually led to the broad chord clipped-tips we see on the B-26K, and T-28.. the broad chord at the tip acting in a similar manner as a swept wing, delaying the trans-sonic moment…
Thanks my understanding – I’d also like to know some more on this…
