How many S-75s were fired at the B-52 and how many failed to make contact due to the B-52s’ ECM?

If you don’t know the answer why you make any assumptions at all?

There is nothing ridiculous, without the related details. Around 6800 launched and over 8000 reported gives an error margin of ~25 %, what is not bad for wartime conditions.

My example was to show how credible some reports can be. In WW2 USA reported that it shot down more Bulgarian fighters than there were actually present.

Whatever you choose, NV was unable to prevent or even fend-off US-attacks with that SAM-systems at hand.

Which is just slight modifications of S-75 and that makes it one tier system with very low capabilities against low-flying targets. If there was S-125 fielded the casualties suffered can increase by a good margin.

    I sincerely doubt the figures.

Here the figures can be very different. USA sources give 190~205 kills to SAM’s, when the max can be 1185. I too think that 190 fugure is just too low.

The Vietnamese did fire thousands of S-75s during the war with America, around 5800 or so – how many US aircraft did it actually knock down? Bear in mind most US aircraft were not flying at Mach 3 or at 90,000 ft (more likely a bomb laden F-105 at 600 kts). During the course of the war S-75s had a success rate reduced to around 1% or less, US ECM technology had basically neutralised the GUIDELINE as a threat to normal combat aircraft (we won’t even talk about the “insane” ECM kit on SR-71s).

It’s easy to come to such conclusions when you miss all important details. First you forgot that more than 50% of the launches were salvo of 2 rockets and ~7% with 3, to increase the chance to destroy the target.
Flying at low altitudes and using ECM lead to the 10-12 rockets/aircraft ratio, but may i ask you which AA system of the same time-frame will have better results? And where this 1% figure came from? So please provide some figures to back up this ridiculous claim.

190 aircraft downed by SAMs acording to most US sources.

And reported more than 8000 rocket launches, when all missiles delivered to Vietnam was little more than 7600, and ~6800 were used.

There are unconfirmed reports, that because of this USA spy, they didn’t show the “big surprise”.

Anybody have a higher res version of this picture?

Sferrin do you still need that picture? I will search if you still want it.

The Giant missile is really Giant.

It’s one of the coolest thing around. And any launch of either S-300V or S-300P… is impressive…

They approach western shores and then whine because we send up fighters to intercept? Don’t like it then don’t come so close.

Exactly the answer i expected from you.I think that you even didn’t try to understand what he is trying to say. It’s just another opportunity to bash the evil commies.
Anyone can fly in international airspace. There is no problems with the Russians flying wherever they want to, and no problems with NATO or USA pilots intercepting them. But while everyone’s in international airspace and not breaching any laws pilots should behave with professionalism.

WTH are Orions and Gulfstreams going to do even if they let them in.

Are you serious? So why USA have problems with letting Tu-142 overfly a carrier?

I think we’d all like to see the evidence, maybe no footage exists of the incidents because they never happened though…

Yeah, the job of the pilots is to always have videocameras with them. Right….

for they paid for it with the totally justified Nuclear attack some years later

That was stupid. If americans died it is “horror”, but killing a lot more than 100 000 japanese civilians is “justified”.

Jon James did you missed the fact that your copy/paste figures are for 9 years of war against organized enemy supported by USA, China and many Arab countries?

How close do you have to be before you can visually discern the difference between an F-15 and F-22? Even 10km is impressive when you realize the F-22 has already killed you a couple times before you visually IDed him.

USAF & USN commonly use LITENING, Sniper XR and LANTIRN in the LWIR search role to simulate Russian and European IRSTs.

So all is just speculation. There is no data if any targeting pod is used, no data on distances or any hard data apart from “i hate this thing”. So who is the fanboy?

Now explain how a RF or IR missile will obtain a lock at BVR distances when they cannot do so at “pilot’s eyeball” distances?

And there is no word what distance that is. Is it 500m or 10km? And does F-15 use something like OLS-27?

Which brings up another question of mine. Wouldn’t the heat of that plasma present a BETTER target for an infrared missile? Something of an interesting trade-off I think.

It is not necessarily that the plasma must that hot. The ionized gas can be with temperature bellow zero and still counts as plasma. So this is only speculation.

The whole point is LO Materials will do the Flanker little good if it has to carry external stores and tanks!

    Flanker with external tanks?
