Ant, further to my brief translation above that the wreck was on a mission to attack an English convoy, here is a photo of the Italian bomber version with the machine gun, scanned from page 238 of “The Concise Guide to Axis Aircraft of World War II” by David Mondey, Chancellor Press 1996.
Thanks for the translation papa lima. I think we might need an italian speaker to go through the whole thing to see if there are any clues as to the origin of the photo.

Thanks for all that Al.
How would I know if it was from a Hawker? Is it possible to narrow it down at all?
That type was also used on the Westland Wapiti

[B]No problem if it was a case of haul it up, hose it down and stick a caption on it.
However complete it looks this will be a GIGANTIC undertaking and cost shed loads of money.
There is only so much money and time available for aircraft restoration.
A fair point Moggy – I’m afraid I’m just one of those people who can’t leave things alone 😉
It goes without saying that if it started to rot away then it would be a tragedy.
While we are on the subject of spade grips… I am desparately seeking an early AH2040 Hurricane spade gip – the type with ‘Dunlop patent’ embossed on it.
If anyone has one, or knows of one that may be bought or traded i’d be very pleased to hear from you )you will without a doubt make it onto my Christmas card list!) 😀
I would love to know which characters are behind this… Anyone know anything?

Hello Malcolm
Thank you very much for that information. I will see if I can get a copy of the aircrafts form 78 and actually see what it says.
Re: Maj Walter Nowotny Story !!!!
The whole thing is ridiculous – in fact an outrage. I hope to god he is left where he is.
Hmm I see.. well I know that the BAPC is drastically short staffed – I wonder if more people were able to take on positions of responsibility (me included!), then things would be a little different.
To the best of my knowledge, Gloster had nothing to do with Whitleys ever – i would have thought it more likely that some rather sentimental soul in the club had some wartime experience with the Whitley and decided by buy one for old times sake.
Anyhow, I am pretty sure that it only acted as a stay of execution for the poor old Whitley!
Still, if anyone knows anything i’ll be glad to hear from them
HI Ant
I didn’t realise the BAPC was in bad shape?
Its some sort of vacuum powered instrument – probably a gyroscope – but not a standard DI by the look of things.

They’re new builds, like the Yak-9 and FW-190’s aren’t they ?I know here in NZ we have (what I think) is the only original Mk1 potentially flyable one left. However they only fast taxi it ’cause of its value.
Here’s some info on it if you’re interested
http://www.nzfpm.co.nz/former/ki43i.htmI do agree, they are great looking aircraft.
Thanks turbo – that Oscar I is now in the US!
Lovely little aircraft… sigh.. i want one…
