We took the old girl for a cross-town truck ride yesterday poor old thing has been a doss-house for street kids in recent times and the interior is none too inviting! However overall she’s in better shape than many other aircraft restorations have started with.

Thanks for the inputs guys and it seems that the beast is G-AZBY as that id has now been found stenciled on a component. The maker’s plate has long since vanished unfortunately.

We’re in the market for parts so if you’ve leads please PM me.

    thanks again

It may be an antipodean thing that they were made of steel as we have a steel pair at Ferrymead plus one alloy one.

However something also says that that may not be true as the two steel ones came to us with the material from HR339 and she never saw service here in NZ so I’d expect them to be the tanks she flew out from the UK with…but who knows.

It must also be a local thing to make water vessels out of them as I had an uncle who made several into canoes/boats. The same guy made a Hudson into a horse float so he and I didn’t see eye to eye on a few things! 🙂

Her’e a couple of pix of NZ2328 (aka TE758) moving into her new workshop a few months back.

There’s still those last little things to finish off but the show is up and running and the Merlin men are into their task in their little corner of the new world.

ZK-BRF City of Christchurch. Sole survivor of the NAC five with some 36,000 hours up and over 32,000 takeoffs (and landings!) which we got in the mid 1970s to spare her the scrapyard. In 1993 she went to Air NZ Harewood and over the next few years gangs of old NAC retirees worked on her and then she came back to us. We’d got the hangar by then as a condition of the deal with Air NZ was that she came back to covered lodgings.

Now we’re doing the work the old guys couldn’t do. The undercarriages have been stripped out etc and that was just too hard for 70year old blokes.

She’s heading to be ready for April next year and the 60th anniversary of NAC.

The high nose attitude was to make access to the tail areas more convenient without having to use scaffolds etc, she’s sitting flat again now.

We recreated the Christchurch airport fence of the 1960s around our Viscount. We wanted people to take pix at the departure gates etc. The other week I went out to the hangar and there’s a guy on the other side. The damn thing’s above waist height…what do you do!

Oh well Dave you’ve forced me to post a pic. Here’s a few month’s old shot of the interior of the cockpit of NZ4112 as Dave Newman currently has it gutted and being done from the bottom up as you might say. A one man labour of love.

    Mikey,

    We’ve people on site Tues-Thurs and Sat-Sun.

The next building is the hangar for the helicopter collection but before then we’ve got to get the Viscount back together for the 60th anniversary of NAC next April. The celebrations are (tentatively) a national tour to some degree of hopefully a dominie, dak and friendly starting in CHC and launched with a champagne breakfast with ZK-BRF. Checkout Richard Waugh’s site for details as they unfold there.

Our finances have taken a hit recently (guess I can say this on a military focussed thread) with the return to NZ of the mortal remains of the ex-TEAL Lockheed Electra ZK-TEA which as we surf is in Hull UK awaiting her ship in the next few days. That gives us three of the four major 1960’s civil aircraft in the one place…just a friendly to go.

So Hudson hangars are a wee bit down the track…

Why thanks for the compliment first time I think I’ve been called a nice chap for a while feel free to revisit again 🙂

Since you guys were out we’ve begun the massive move of all the gear out of the storage it’s been in for years and here’s a one week old photo of NZ2328/TE758 and sundry materials filling up what we thought was a handsomely large workshop!

Just sticking my kiwi colonial oar in guys.

The earlier comment about the density of museums is obviously right but what was missed was the density of similarity. When I was in the UK the other year I’m sorry but I got bored with seeing all the same types in museum after museum. And all so accesible given your excellent rail system.

The other point I’d make is that if you look back over the other posts on the thread do you notice that all that’s mentioned is military aircraft and WW2 at that (Vulcans excepted).

Sorry guys but you’re missing the big picture..what about Hermes, Tudors and the like? How about concentrating on getting the Duxford airliners under cover before worrying about another WW2 type. While you’re focussing on wanting one of everyone of those bombers and fighters of 39-45 there’s another 61 years of aviation to be dealt with.

Is the idea aviation preservation or just WW2 preservation? Its 6 years versus over 100 we’re talking about here.

(ducks for cover grateful of southern hemisphere remoteness affording protection)
