I think it was just that it just wasn’t thought of in the same way as it is today. And that’s not just flying display’s, but everything including sport, the work place, thecars you drive etc. Don’t forget, these early photos of Don Bullock flying Sally B so low were only taken about 5 or 6 years after the wearing of crash helmet on a motorcycle had been made compulsary in the UK…

Very low flypast were the norm at displays in the UK and elsewhere ‘in the old days’.
There’s a famous photo of Hawkers test pilot, Bill Bedford, taken at a display in the 60’s, flying Hurricane PZ865 at cockpit height down between a static line-up of Lightnings and Shackletons…… 😮

I understand what you mean it was a different time and i wonder maybe we are wrong to compare it with todays flying, A lot of lessons were learned from those days i guess and we moved on.
I also agree with dees that low flying still goes on but you won’t see bombers or Aircraft of that size displayed so low these days and low flying these days is nowhere near the public so in general its far safer.

That Duxford shot is positively tame compared to the previous three. How times change. For the safer, I might add!

Some of these photo’s are unbelievable i have never seen anything like it, I agree with Steve that the Duxford one looks tame compared, In some of these photo’s you would think the Aircraft is doomed, I guess it was at a day and age where Warbird industry was new and there had not been many accidents.
I tend to agree he thought he was invinsible but he was proved wrong on that on at Biggin Hill 1980 , It was often said that the Invader crash was a landmark event in Airshow safety i thought it was just they stopped people flying as passengers on display flights, But i wonder if it it made other pilots think twice on how they display, In a fighter such low flying seems less dangerous and more acceptable fighters tend to react faster etc, In a bomber it looks plain scary.

I thought there was one in the UK and sure of one in NOrway and i believe there was a mark3 in the USA which was i believe at one point the oldest flying jet in the USA.

I was thinking that too, I was trying to think what date the picture could be, Its clearly Biggin Hill sadly the same place that the fatal Invader crash happened too.
I am Glad Sally B is not flown so low anymore, No room for error at that height, Still it makes a good photo.

Its intresting this retirement thing with Ray so often comes up, I feel he is Semi-retired but still enjoys to make a appearance when he can, He does not make so many show appearances now but i don’t think he is making a meal out of this retirement thing, Ray and MH434 have been on the scene a long time now and both have grown older gracefully and going by his display in September he is still the best in a Spitfire and nobody else comes close.

As to the box well plenty is due to make its debut on the scene this year including Curtis 75,Yak3 etc and i guess all will be revealed soon, It will be kind of funny if its just someones tool shed 😀 , But at least it got a thread going here whatever it is.

That’s not the point. It was and is behaviour unbecoming to this board and its members. I am disgusted that Steve has been made to feel such that he has left as he was is one of the good guys. Right or wrongs of the clip, it is irrelevant. It is old news, it is great TV, and it is not worth bad feeling.

I agree, I also feel there is nothing really wrong with this clip being shown, Yes it is old new and for me it dos not give the CAA anything they do not already know, Its a skillfully flown manouvre by a pilot by a pilot who knows a thing or two about low flying to say the least.
We should see it for what it is and that is great entertainment and a piece of very clever flying, Its sad that anyone has had to leave the forum for this.

Dear me Flood do you think this a Anti Elvis thread?, Its not the man is a Legend and i for one am glad to see him at number one, He still has a great fan base and always will.
The difference between the chart of these days and of Elvis’s era is when Elvis was in his Heyday you needed to sell a huge amount of records to be number one these days it don’t take much to get to number one and through Elvis fan base and his fan clubs people were able to put him back to number one, Now if Fan clubs etc can do that for one song what can the likes of Simon Cowell do?,Its easy to get a number one now is what i am saying as long as you got the right people in place.
