Some sort of defence for nest?

OK forget the price for a moment , I have been thinking about the reaction this photograph has caused both here and with friends I have asked in person. The first thing is very few people including myself get. So overall its something that apprieciated by the minority, so its appeal is limited but not in my view elitist, more obscure really.

For me the reason that is does not appeal is it does not hold the attention, involve you or give you any emotional response, For me even if I don’t like something by Dali, Picasso etc those artists managed to trigger an emotion of some sort and not one of total dismissal, So if this photo was meant to be a non emotional thing look at it and move on I sort of get it and lets be honest its created a lot of debate.

For me its the lift music of photos its there but you have no great urge to be involved in it.

One aspect about a photograph’s worth still puzzles me – surely it’s the negative or digital file which has value, since it could be used to produce any amount of exact copies of the photo?
Unless you happen to be the Great Elmyr, it’s virtually impossible to make an exact copy of a Renoir for example…

That ponders the question, who owns the rights to the photo? The photographer with the digital file or the buyer with the picture?
If I spent that sort of money I would want to own rights to the photo for sure.

Is it only the money that really bothers people about this photograph?

I suspect that it is; there are much worse photographs, and much worse art but if these are changing hands for £50, £500 or £5000 nobody bats-an-eyelid. Of course it is entirely natural to think so if £2.7million is a lot of money to you (or me) but I doubt that anybody would even be aware if the buyer had spent £2.7million on a second (or third) home or a (second or third) yacht!

With a human life worth about £5 all of us have wasted money ‘on meaningless and irrelevant crap’ haven’t we?

I would say for me it was the price that attracted me to start this thread and as to whether it is any good or not. If it had sold for something like £200 it would not have attracted any attention at all, unless somebody posted a copy of it here asking opinions.
Taste in art and photography is much like food really some like spicy and interesting others like bland and boring and many of fall in between the two.

To play devils advocate slightly we are all asuming he/she bought it as a piece of art they liked, however maybe it was purely a business type investment for somebody with loads of money who realises theres a lack of profit in yachts and houses lately, and saw art as a better bet.
