Wreckage is found, then it isn’t. We are told that there wasn’t a distress call…now we are told different.

    Now it didn’t change direction.

The EgyptAir flight that plunged into the Mediterranean Sea last week did not swerve before it went down, according to senior Egyptian officials, in a sharp contradiction of comments about “sudden swerves” made by the Greek defence minister.

And – get this! – a UFO was spotted in the same region on the same day!

The mystery of what caused EgyptAir flight MS804 to crash has continued to deepen – with new reports claiming an unidentified flying object (UFO) was spotted in the region where it went down.

    Goodby Cato…

Burt Kwouk, who was best known for playing Inspector Clouseau’s manservant Cato in the Pink Panther films, has died aged 85.
He appeared in seven Pink Panther films opposite Peter Sellers as Clouseau’s servant who regularly attacked his employer to keep him alert…

    Left hand, right hand…?

Mohamed Said Shoukair was believed to have lost contact with airspace operators, but French aviation sources today said he called in to say he was making ‘an emergency descent’ because of a fire.

The Airbus A320 flight MS804 plunged into the sea last Thursday while travelling from Paris to Cairo.

Sources in France said there was ‘conversation several minutes long’ between Captain Shoukair and the controllers, which amounted to ‘a distress call’.

M6, the French TV channel, reported that the pilot then initiated a ‘rapid descent’ aimed at putting out the fire on board, and clearing the smoke…

Official information should come from one investigating unit, who might then explain why there are variations over what had been said and what has suddenly come to light and give the official verdict on info from unofficial sources. In addition the media need to hold back on demanding information instantly and speculating to fill the gaps on their pages – and allowing rent-a-viewpoint nutters or know-nothing morons to push their political agenda into the limelight via the incident (I am looking at you Donald Trump) should be recognised as scraping the bottom of the cesspit and forbidden.

Found an add-on for the above obit:

…Mary Anne Noland isn’t the first to send a final political message in an obituary this year. Jeffrey Cohen, a Pittsburgh man who died in January at the age of 70, requested in his obituary that loved ones not vote for Trump. “Jeffrey would ask that in lieu of flowers, please do not vote for Donald Trump,” it read.

You won’t have heard of her, but you might have heard of her obituary…

NOLAND, Mary Anne Alfriend. Faced with the prospect of voting for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, Mary Anne Noland of Richmond chose, instead, to pass into the eternal love of God on Sunday, May 15, 2016, at the age of 68…

Feel free to add people, or to comment on those who have died. Sometimes I see names that have a vaguely familiar ring to them and other times they pass me by completely – doing my routine now and he still doesn’t come up, even a search on Google News using his name only brings up his comments on the passing of George Martin; in mitigation my app for The Guardian stopped working a few months ago and I haven’t got around to sorting it out yet.

Anyway… A former heavy metal drummer, lately jazz musician.

NICK MENZA, DRUMMER for the influential metal band Megadeth, has died after collapsing on stage during a performance of his progressive jazz trio in Southern California, a family spokesman said this afternoon.

Please feel free to add other obits to this thread. Ta.

I wonder which way the Daily Express is leaning…?

In the most extensive survey of its kind, almost 16 per cent of Turkish adults said they would consider re-locating to the UK once their country becomes a full member of the EU.

According to the poll, which saw more than 2,600 adults interviewed across all 27 provinces of Turkey, most of those keen to come to Britain are either unemployed or students, raising the prospect of a migrant influx which would place an unprecedented strain on the UK’s struggling public services, including the NHS.

The results come as separate figures expose the security risk posed to the UK by Turkey’s accession to the EU – an ambition previously supported by the Prime Minister.

Analysis by Vote Leave suggests Turkey’s membership in the EU would result in far higher numbers of criminals coming to the UK.

Figures released by the campaign group show the crime rate in Turkey far exceeds that of the UK, with the murder rate at least four times that of Britain.

There are also nine million privately-owned firearms registered to its citizens…

    http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/672563/Turkey-EU-Britain-exclusive-poll-crime-figures-Turks

An ‘exclusive’ poll for the Express and analysed by Vote Leave, suggesting that:

    • 16% of the population would consider coming to Britain
    • Students and the unemployed were the ones most keen to come here
    • There would be an ‘unprecedented’ strain on the NHS and other public services
    • ‘Far higher’ numbers of criminals would come to Britain, since Turkey has a crime rate that far exceeds Britain’s with four times as many murders
    • And arms smuggling would increase because there are nine million firearms registered to Turks and we shall all be murdered in our beds

So absolutely no chance of any bias in the questions or skewing the answers to suit their purpose, then?

Elsewhere in the Express… French smell of garlic, Germans have no sense of humour, the Dutch are all potheads and the Italians all carry a white flag just in case someone invades their country and they don’t have time to run away.

The ‘Queen of the Channel“, and the straight man to a talking horse…

Cindy Nicholas, one of the greats of marathon swimming who was once known as Queen of the Channel, has died from liver failure. She was 58.

The Toronto athlete, who became a lawyer and served as a Liberal member of the Ontario legislature from 1987 to 1990, was best known for her record-setting solo crossings of the English Channel in the 1970s and 1980s. Her daughter, Leahanne LeGrow, said Nicholas died Thursday.

In 1977, Nicholas became the first woman to complete a non-stop, two-way crossing of the 33-kilometre Channel. She finished in 19 hours 55 minutes, the quickest result at the time for any male or female swimmer.

Damned shame, that is a whole lot of potential museum exhibit that probably would have rotted away after prolonged exposure to air…

    Thank you anyway.

15-odd hours of no comments in the day after the crash is becoming not unusual here?

And as for restraint…leave it to Trump to spread his net and put the rest of us out of business.

The number of people who’ve played in The Beastie Boys diminishes once again…

John Berry, a founding member of New York City hip-hop group the Beastie Boys, has died. The pioneering guitarist passed away Thursday morning at a hospice in Danvers, Massachusetts, after suffering from frontal lobe dementia. He was 52.
