I don’t think the price of the food at Duxford is a direct concern of the museum itself. The staff no doubt have their own canteens,
    or get a substantial discount.
If the company now running the food concessions are seeing a fall in customer numbers, they will no doubt adjust their menus, or their prices.
They still have to pay the IWM, come rain or shine.

You are right about the museum not being concerned – they will have it all contracted out so that they are not connected and therefore cannot be held responsible if the caterer poisons visitors. I cannot imagine there is a staff canteen (usually one of the first targets in cutbacks) and the chances of there being a staff discount sorted out with the franchise holder/s is pretty remote.

But if the numbers fall the caterers might complain that there just isn’t enough to draw visitors in to the museum (used to happen a lot in department stores, complaints that the signage was hidden by sales signs or Xmas decorations, that sort of thing), although I’d guess that would be scraping the barrel. If the caterer cannot make enough to pay the site fees on top of food and staff costs, etc, at these prices then I suppose they might drop the price but they are usually finely tuned to provide x% profit to the shareholders or bank manager – and you know how they hate missing out.

Talking to the girl before I left, it transpired that they too were after a full English, at which she mentioned that she was going to see what could be done about reinstating it for Sunday. I wished her luck, and hope that on my next visit it has been re-instated.

Surprised the response wasn’t ‘we’re tired of telling people – there just isn’t any demand for it…’

And they probably discontinued it on health grounds, like many hospital restaurants.

Great – reduce this to a thread about McDonalds and fast food rather than prices at Duxford, why don’t you?

Yes, the food at Duxford is expensive. Yes, if there was a McDs, Burger King, KFC, whatever, there it would be cheaper – as long as Duxford didn’t insist on a minimum price policy (think the £1.50 a can of fizz at every outlet at airshows, as set by the organisers).

If Duxford wanted the price of their food to be affordable they could drop the price, and absorb the loss somewhere else, but they won’t: as far as they are concerned their target market can afford to pay £5 for what might well be an artisan construct, yet is still just a ham sandwich.

Excellent. Not much out there on the Fleet Air Arm Harvard so it is nice to see something like this – plus an image of it in service.

Known as the “silverback” he was the leader of the gorilla troop.
“Harry was a very gentle and calm gorilla and he will be greatly missed by everyone at Dublin Zoo,” the statement said.

Except that the SS were not fighting the Norfolks but the Royal Scots – and you don’t need to tell us twice.

Today – Saturday, 28th May, or what is left of it – is the 76th anniversary of another massacre, at Wormhoudt.

As part of the British Expeditionary Force’s (BEF) retreat to Dunkirk, the 144th Infantry Brigade of the 48th (South Midland) Infantry Division was holding the road that runs southward from Bergues through Wormhoudt, Cassel and Hazebrouck to delay the German advance.

British troops at Wormhoudt were overrun by advancing German forces. Having exhausted their ammunition supplies, the troops at this point surrendered assuming that they would be taken prisoner according to the Geneva Convention.

After their surrender, a large group of soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 4th Battalion Cheshire Regiment, and gunners of the Royal Artillery as well as French soldiers in charge of a military depot were taken to a barn in La Plaine au Bois near Wormhout and Esquelbecq on 28 May 1940. The Allied troops had become increasingly alarmed at the brutal conduct of the SS soldiers en route to the barn, which included the shooting of a number of wounded stragglers. On arrival at the barn the most senior British officer in the group, Captain James Lynn-Allen, protested but was immediately rebuked by an SS soldier.[1]

When there were nearly 100 men inside the small barn, soldiers from the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler, threw stick-grenades into the building killing many POWs. The grenades failed to kill everyone, largely due to the bravery of two British NCOs, Sergeant Stanley Moore and CSM Augustus Jennings, who hurled themselves on top of the grenades using their bodies to suppress the force of the explosion and shield their comrades from the blast.[2][3] Upon realising this, the SS called for two groups of five to come out. The men came out and were shot. Despite being shot, Gunner Brian Fahey survived, unknown to the SS men at the time. Concluding that these methods were too slow, the SS troopers simply fired into the barn with their weapons.[4]

Several British prisoners were able to escape, while a few others, like Fahey, were left for dead.[5] Captain Lynn-Allen died while trying to escape, although he enabled Private Bert Evans to escape; Evans was the last survivor of the massacre.[6][7] A total of 80 men were killed. After a couple of days, Fahey and several others were found by regular German Army medics and taken to hospital. Their wounds were treated before they were sent to prisoner of war camps in occupied Europe.[5]

The Waffen-SS division, Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler was under the overall command of Oberstgruppenführer Sepp Dietrich. It was alleged from post-war testimony that it was specifically soldiers of the 2nd Battalion under the command of then Hauptsturmführer Wilhelm Mohnke that carried out the atrocity. However, Mohnke never had to face a trial for any alleged part in the war crimes based on these hors de combat killings. Mohnke strongly denied the accusations against him, telling historian Thomas Fischer, “I issued no orders not to take English prisoners or to execute prisoners.”[8] Mohnke died in August 2001.

In 1947, a number of survivors of the massacre returned to the scene accompanied by officials from the War Crimes Interrogation Unit, following investigations undertaken by the office of the Judge Advocate General. It proved impossible to construct a sufficiently strong case to bring prosecutions. A number of alleged key witnesses were reported to have died on the Eastern Front, while others invoked the “SS Oath” and refused to talk.[2]

In 1988, after a campaign by British MP Jeff Rooker, the case was reopened but a German prosecutor came to the conclusion that there was insufficient evidence to bring charges.[5]

The incident was re-enacted in the 2004 BBC television docudrama Dunkirk.

Toxic Avenger Actor Joe Fleishaker has passed away at the age of 62. He passed away on Monday at the Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. His brother Haskel told THR that the cause of death was most likely congestive heart failure.

But not all obits were true:

This week, a viral report spread through Twitter that the comic book legend had kicked the bucket, but like nearly all celebrity death reports of late, it was actually just a hoax originating from a site intended to fool readers.
The reports of the Marvel Comic book writer came from a site called Cult of Buzz and was worded in a way to make readers think Lee had died.

‘“Legendary Marvel Comics Writer Stan Lee, 93, Dyes Peacefully In His West Hollywood Home
“In a press release from his wife Joan Clayton Babcock Lee, it has been confirmed that the dark streaks you see in Lee’s hair are not natural.
“‘Stan adores the public and loves all the fans. That being said he doesn’t like to discuss the fact that his hair is completely white now.’”

A group of British neo-Nazis have posed performing Hitler salutes in the “execution room” of a concentration camp in Germany.

Police are investigating the picture, which was posted on Twitter by the north-west branch of National Action with the caption: “Oy Vey, such horrors. Dem bois were recently on tour in Germania.”

The image showed two men raising their right arms in a Nazi salute and holding the group’s flag, while writing on the photo pointed to “meat hooks” on the wall, with a smiley face and National Action’s logo.
