Well, how on earth did he get there ?

He bought his way there, and therein lies the problem. He now wants the party to pay for his election campaign and yet he has alienated so many party members that he has suddenly got a problem – they are either reluctant or refusing point blank to pay for him.

    Someone must love him.

Someone must love him, true – maybe his wife, possibly a mistress or two. Some of the American population think he is the best thing since the last best thing, but the important people in his party don’t like him.

    Quite a lot of ‘someones’.

A bit like the winner of some reality show with the winner voted for by the public, yet a few years down the line no one can remember his name and what his ‘thing’ was. The main thing here is, as I mentioned above, he is not popular with the important people.

If success breeds success then Trump must be a winner !

And the ‘winner’ is helping to destroy his party! After Obama won last time the Republicans admitted they needed to reach out to the ethnic voters who hold a huge section of the majority who snubbed them; Trump is not appealing to them with his aggressive platform of nativism, xenophobia, crudeness, and misogyny. He is not appealing to the old republicans who favour economic and social conservatism, and he has turned off those who wonder how he will get any of his plans through when most of them are unthought through bluster.

Do you write the American form “gotten” because you are writing about an American subject?

Just to mess with your mind, Charlie.

Sorry to drag this thread back to the limelight…

‘To’ and ‘too’ – a problem our American cousins have lots of trouble differentiating between, with much annoyance (to me, anyway).

Another day, another demonstration that maybe they shouldn’t be allowed anything more potent than a water pistol…

A fired Texas trucking company worker bent on revenge returned to the office Wednesday and fatally shot a supervisor with a shotgun before he killed himself.

“You ruined my life,” the worker yelled as he opened fire, Ryan Sullivan, a spokesman for the Harris County Sheriff’s Department, told NBC News.

That blast killed the supervisor and wounded two other workers at Knight Transportation in the Houston suburb of Katy, Sheriff Ron Hickman said earlier. Then the disgruntled worker turned the weapon on himself.

An interesting chart which shows that the numbers killed by shooting in the workplace are falling, but 300 people is still nowhere near a satisfactory amount. Not giving nutters and morons weapons would be a start, but they’d rather arm everyone than let them fight it out with sticks and harsh words…

The ‘you’ was not you specifically. Sorry that you took the you to be you…

And I was just enlightening others, if not yourself, that there is more to opposition than the ‘official’ version.

    What opposition?

Despite what you may think, there is opposition to the government out there. There are numerous other political parties/groups/mindsets other than Labour, and despite the general line of thought on this forum there is a section of society who will never vote the way you will, a section who would rather vote for a freshly slaughtered pig in a tutu wearing rollerskates than a Tory – just as there is a section who would never consider voting for any party to the left of Boris Johnson.
