Thanks for the thought, Howard. A couple of helpful forumites have already been in touch with offers of help with photocopying. But if a copy of the sept/oct 2003 issue is available then yes maybe it would be nice to have my own copy 🙂

It was RAF Debden near Thaxted, Denis. The answer was confirmed to me on another forum.

Bump. Have none of our Essex based members heard anything about this one before??

Indeed, I drove past about half an hour ago and there is a big empty space where two of them once stood.

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

skyskooter – that is, or was, a seriously impressive model. Great shame it wasn’t looked after.

To anyone interested – its an Airfix Canberra B.2 that I’d like built in late sixties 231 OCU colours. If interested in helping then please email me using the address below. I’m not looking for show standard, but good enough to display in a museum !

I for one shall certainly miss its unmistakable smoky trail across the skies, and the gentle but dynamic way it was displayed. I just hope it receives as much care and respect back in the USA, and many more safe and smoky hours in the sky!

Possibly Tim, but the history of an aircraft I was reading up on describes there being colour photos of it in service on the back of the “british roundel” publication. Thats all I have to go on!

Beautiful! It was Stephen Grey that ignited my interest in the P-40 family.

Understandable. For me it was seeing the late John Crocker deliver the shark mouthed OFMC P-40 to Duxford during an airshow in I think ’84. The sight of Ray Hanna leaping up onto the wing in delight before the prop stopped turning is something I’ll never forget!

Presumably just the garden / area fenced off with it, which is still agood size. And of course the access drive off the main road. Its in a great position with a lovely view across the old airfield!

According to Cheffins estate agents the Little Walden control tower, now a private dwelling, has sold on again for £745,000 – STC. Extensively altered inside that seems a good price to achieve!

Great photos of the jets. Have to say my favourites are the Vampire and the silverJP Mk.4. Thank God for those who are prepared to put their hand in their pockets to keep these old jets flying.!

Does Southend get much in the way of historics, including airliners passing through? Perhaps you could start a Southend diary for us – ala Duxford and North Weald.
