    How the ruddy heck did that AN-2 manage to stay in the air today :eek:? That blinkin great biplane turned in heading west, and just sat there, and sat there, and sat there.. with practically zero noticeable forward airspeed. I was transfixed in awe, expecting it to simply fall out of the sky (which thankfully it didnt) :).

    Who says slow aircraft are boring? A remarkable aeroplane and even more remarkable display. Nice one.

    Back in the days of Gannet AEW.3 XL502 being airworthy and operated from Carlisle during the late eighties, one of her ground crew members (Tom Stodart i think) also owned the Vulcan there. At the time she was kept running and was still in very good condition, but as to her current condition i have no idea i’m afraid. Sorry.

    Thank you makes all the hard work worthwhile now who has pics of our three ship with lS326 and the rapide?

    Can’t help with pics i’m afraid, but the Rapide, AN-2, Swordfish trio was an excellent idea. Three big bi-planes but all completely different 🙂

    Personally i thought it was a cracking display. At last some sensible variety has been injected into Duxford’s display programme. Right from the 4 x F-15 flyby i thought it was all good. And the Vulcan’s return has been long overdue as well.

    Well done everyone at the IWM and to all the display crews involved.

    Nice write up James. I also can highly recommend Brian Rivas and Annie Bullens book on John Derry. I read it around twenty years ago and its still one of my favourite books, and a very sobering read.

    Below is a pic of WG236 remains (minus cockpit, engines etc) where she fell like a leaf on the perimeter of Farnborough airfield. The failure of the outer wings is quite clear.

    I take your point about relying on then and now photos, but its the position of the hangars and runway intersecton at Alconbury that caught my eye.

    99.9% sure its UK, as i have no recollection of dad ever mentioning an airshow or indeed a trip overseas during that sort of era.

    Good call Agcat. According to this photo Alconbury certainly had two hangars in the same approximate location.

    James – interesting suggestion. Unless someone else confirms otherwise i think thats our best bet to date. Although in the distance to the left there is what looks like a fin / fuselage of something else, possibly a KC-135 or 707. Is that possible?

    Pretty sure it was taken with the family box brownie. Just a shame though he never had a cine-camera.
