Dunno looks a but Wyvern shaped to me :dev2:
Hmmm… nice try JC.:p
Nice one Elliott.. thats the best suggestion so far. Will see if i have any close ups of TF.2 and S.4 tails. Now what about the other part.. the curved bakelite part has me stumped..
I always try to fly over the hedge at the end of my strip, regardless of what I’m flying.
…who said anything about a hedge.? We are talking about a pole apparently placed deliberately at the end of the runway.. and a pilot in a WW2 german fighter with minimal visibility at take off. When was the last time you flew a
‘109’ from this particular airfield.?
Will it be at Legends… :diablo:
A turboprop…? Definately not. Besides i can’t find the correct valve caps for the tyres.:p
Oh for crying out loud… don’t you think a pilot flying in a relatively ‘new to him’ aeroplane has enough to think about without having to worry about bl**dy poles at the end of the runway. Its hardly his local aerodrome is it.!!
I have a jolly good idea where the wooden ‘telegraph’ pole can be relocated to….
:D:D
Don’t be daft… hav’nt got a tyre for the tailwheel yet.:D
…and after giving the ‘fastener’ type piece an inspection sure enough there is the stamp WA4 44 080 A. The WA4 indicating Wyvern.
Thanks for the replies.
Elliott your absolutely right about numbers on the light fitting. Gave it a clean and sure enough there was RFE or RFF or REF5C/1257.
Is the accident in post #8 its arrival at the Strathallen Museum then?
The resulting u/c collapse was apparently due to a gust of wind just at touchdown making for a heavier than usual landing.. with the starboard gear digging in the grass. I’m led to believe that after travelling around 2000ft it ended up virtually outside the main display hangar before stopping.
…also not knowing the weather/ground conditions at the time, would it be possible that the plane wondered off its desired take off track during the roll/take off..?
Strathallen Comet.
One ex RAF Comet ferry flight that did’nt quite end as hoped. Starboard gear collapsed after heavier than hoped for landing. Taken from the superb airliners.net site.. copyright Michael Brazier.
Thanks for the reminder Pete.. i’m sure we’ll all spare a moment today to reflect.!
JR must surely have a guardian angel watching over him. Serious incidents with the Blenheim, B17, Lysander and now a ‘109’. A fine pilot and i’m just glad he’s ok.. but what a bl**dy stupid incident to put him at risk in the first place.!
Very interesting… would be great to see the photos of them if they are released.!
