There’s also a strong possibility of the Rockwell Bronco being brought back into production for the US Military

No idea, could be something to do with ‘Elf and safety, only allowed a certain number of tripods or something like that. I was never challenged anyway to produce it

I don’t think Jeeps would have been used by ground crew either, but have seen them used for getting flight crew around as austernj673 says (a green Jeep in 2TAF markings would look very nice).

For working on aircraft at dispersal points, i’ve seen photos of 15cwt trucks (Bedford, Fordson etc) with workshop body’s on the back, this was on Bomber Command bases but i’d imagine the same would be seen at Fighter ones

Which aviation museum dosen’t allow photography? And the last time I went to Hendon I wasn’t allowed to take a tripod in either!
The lighting is important generally, not just for people who ‘take pictures for employment’, I like to be able to get a good luck at the subject.
What I don’t get with Hendon is that there dosen’t seem to be a reason for the low light levels. Yeoviltons’ Carrier exhibit does it for a reason (like it or not).
You name one museum with lower light, what about the very many that don’t. Cosford strikes a perfect balance.

Kent Battle of Britain Museum doesn’t allow photography. Surprised about the tripod, any time i’ve been with a tripod i’ve simply asked for a tripod pass at reception and given one

Hendon does have faults – yes the lighting is rubbish in some areas, but at least they let you take cameras in! If you want peace and quiet, you’re in the wrong century.

    Rant over – I’m going for a lie down.

Good point – in the National Army Museum, photography is banned (as well as at least one other aviation museum), and you even have your bag taken off you. Plus you’re allowed tripods, unlike the Science Museum, and the lighting is much worse in the aviation hall there (very hard to spot the Antoinette in the darkness), as well as the arrangement of exhibits making viewing let alone photography difficult

Where is this Do24? I’ve certainly never seen one at Hendon or Cosford….

I think its a disgrace that no Transport Command aircraft are displayed. Is this the only major world museum without a Dak’?
Hendon should be somewhere we are proud off and above all should be there to celebrate the RAF and those that served, it does neather.

There is a Dakota, albeit just the nose. Last time I saw it, it was in the Bomber Command hall vertical, resting on the bulkhead

Real shame about the control tower and factory behind – it was originally to go to the RAFM but apparently it’s now to be turned into a bar/resturant

Great photos of a gorgeous aircraft – apart from Coningsby’s, are there any preserved Phantoms in grey/green camouflage? Suits it very well

Very nice, and well done. Does this mean some aircraft previously displayed inside will have be displayed outside instead?

I can highly reccomend a visit. I’ve only been once, but being able to see three Mossies in one place, especially the prototype, as well as other interesting aircraft such as the Horsa fuselage and Comet noses, is a great opportunity. Plus the refreshments in the shop are a lot cheaper than any motorway services, which is handy as it’s literally just off the m25!

Thanks Kev – i’m designing a couple of wooden painted signs to make before April and was hoping to include the Squadron badge on one of them. Me and a few others are doing a WW1 Royal Flying Corps display with the 22 Squadron Bristol F2b at RAFM Hendon on 4/5 April, wanted to make it as accurate as possible so won’t be using the proper Squadron badge.

I’d be interested in knowing where they were based between the 21st and 31st March 1918 if that’s possible.

Thanks for your help, regards, Rob

Concordes first flight was 3 months after the Tu144’s and it entered service 26 days after the Tupolev did. Clearly a case of BAC/Aerospatiale ripping off the Russians!

Actually, I thought the Russians found out about Concorde and designed to get one up on the West by beating them to it – I also heard a story of Bae ‘accidentally’ makiing sure some inaccurate drawings got into the Russians hands to bodge up their design

Ah, but the ‘e’ stands for Excellence, England, Europe and Entente (Cordiale).

Oh, and Ecosse, Extravagance and Escalation as well!

Seeming as no doubt these stamps are designed to appeal to the general public, surely it makes more sense to have a well known aircraft featured such as Concorde, as opposed to the VC10 or Lightning (or Harrier) which, although well known to aviation enthusiasts, won’t be as well known as Concorde to the general public
