Change of Auster – i’ve been given the Auster frame hanging from the roof of the hangar (above the T6) as it’s in better condition. This one is G-AJPZ. Here’s a couple of pics of her, her frames look a bit different from other J1’s as one of her previous owners decided to change the canopy to make her look like a WW2 Mk V (despite the difference in engine, windscreen and various other bits)

Ah cheers – unfortunately my garage is now full of stuff (old bed frames etc, plus i’ve set up my own little gym in there) so she’ll be staying at Bruntingthorpe, plus she won’t fit between the little path between the side of my house and the fence (for some reason our garage is at the bottom of the garden backing onto a narrow alleyway).
Might put something up to get her undercover and repaint the frames (If I cut up an old tent she should fit in there easily), might bike down to Brunty sometime this week and see what I can do. Anyone got a spare set of Auster wings? 😀
Nice Miles Gemini flew over me and a couple of other forumites at Brunty today
That’s mine? To be honest have no idea what reg mine is, apparently it’s reg was given to another Auster so mine may get the reg off one of Adrians other Austers. Apparently that way it only costs £40 to register it with the CAA, whereas to get a reg out of sequence is £200, which is a shame as I really wanted the currently available reg G-ROBL!
Edit – here’s some pictures of her/him/it (needs naming, i’ve got a couple of ideas though 😉 )

Did a quick google and apparently G-AJPZ was heavily damaged when she was overturned by a gale at Thruxton, will try and find out more
Cheers, Rob
When abouts you lot going to be working on 904 Andy? I’ll come over and say hi at some point after i’ve finished off the T6 cowling
I only ever bought one comic, back in London as a kid (sometime in the late 1990’s im guessing), got it because I liked the look of the plane on the front cover – it was called ‘Firing Zone’ by Commando Comics about an observer for the artillery, and ended up in an Auster III a fair few times (funny really, considering what became my favourite aircraft  ). There’s a picture of the front cover on the far left, eighth row down here

No idea what I did with the comic, haven’t seen it for years – cheers for reminding me about it, i’ll probably be up all night digging out the cupboards looking for it!
No problem Rob, always happy to encourage the younger generation, particularly those that show an interest in Vintage Aircraft.
Mind you when I say give you a ride, I actually expect you to do most of the flying when we are airborne. The Champ is great fun and very easy to fly once you get used to using your feet. I bet you even keep it in balance better than T6 flyer does, but that probably has something to do with the size of his feet!
Sounds great to me, was the same when I had a go in G-AMMS. Will any flight time in my logbook help go towards my PPL? Haven’t started doing it yet, but thinking of doing so in a year or so.
Cheers, Rob
Cheers for the pics, i’d love to take you up on the ride in the Aeronca if it’s no problem, looks like i’ll be spending most of the weekend in the air!
Strange, can’t find any mention on the Auster Club site under the “Events” calender.
Same here, it’s listed in an Auster Club magazine I have though
Well, I had had a quick trip on her with Phil at the wheel to see what she can do – decided standing up was the best way to travel after the fuel gauge made it rather uncomfy. Cheers for asking Martin, hopefully should be a great weekend (just hope the weather holds out), do you know how many other Austers are supposed to come down, and if the Mk III is back from Bodmin yet? Says ‘change of details in process’ on the CAA site, as well as a new photo of her. Will try and get a logbook sometime soon, anyone know where I can get one from?
Cheers, Rob
Blimey got the worst sunburn ever at Leicester and the Brunty on the 8th – that’s why I look so shiny on TT’s pic, i’ve been plastered in suncream ever since! Doesn’t half sting when it gets into my eyes though…
Where abouts were you? Turns out I walked past TT about twice (didn’t meet him till last saturday) but met Andy Bonsell (320psi), think I recognised a couple of other people as well but wasn’t sure
Blimey, that was the worst thing i’ve ever drove! Great fun riding along on though, until it went over a bump. Yep i’m going down to Eggesford on the 5th/6th August for a bit of Auster-ing, can’t wait! Did you find out if i’d be able to get a flight in G-AREI Martin? Be happy enough just getting the chance to see her. It’s good to get involved in historic aviation, as well as giving me something to do on a weekend when all my mates are working also get the chance to meet interesting people and get some hands on experience with interesting planes.
It’s a Cessna T50, known as the Bobcat to the Canadians and the Crane to Cessna. Also nicknamed the Bamboo Bomber because it’s made entirely out of wood (not bamboo though, and it’s not a bomber!) as well as several other nicknames. It was used as a light transport aircraft, and also by the Canadians as a training aircraft for conversion from single to twin engine aircraft by the CATP (Canadian Air Training Programme)
Won’t be seeing the Vixen at Brunty running for a loooong time, it wasn’t safe when it did run, the condition of the engine was in doubt and it didn’t have any brakes as well as some other worrying problems with it – Andy Bonsell (320psi) knows more. That said, there were some people working on it last Saturday at the Lightning QRA Day
