very nice pics of Belvaderes there.. a fantastic looking machine.. i have always thought the Royal Navys mk-5 Wessex’s looked the best.. is that famous one from the Falkland campaign still around..

If you mean the one that saved lives on Sir Galahad, she’s on loan at East Midlands Aeropark, accompanying two other Wessex’s, more info on her here http://www.museum-explorer.org.uk/show.php?page=exhibit&c=24&m=64&y=138&q=&e=3547&t=1

The Whirlwind is my favourite, particularly the longer nosed HAR9 and HAR10 versions, the Belvedere is very nice as well

Cheers, i’ve heard of the Tamiya mistake, hoping to convert an Airfix F.3 to an F.1. I’ve e-mailed the RAFM about the F.9/40 hopefully they’ll let me know, if it is incorrect I doubt they’ll repaint it though, i’ve got a colour profile of DG206/G, the F.9/40 that was written off, in grey/green with yellow undersides.

Still have no idea about the rear view mirror bubble though, of the photos i’ve seen of Meteor F.1’s and F.9/40’s, seems like a 50/50 split but still don’t know why

Well, the first pic is ‘S for Sugar’, now on display at the RAF Museum, Hendon, no clues on the second one, but judging by the B17 in the background, maybe it’s S for Sugar again? http://www.raf.mod.uk/rafwaddington/r5868.html

If it’s any use any more, the only two Lancaster’s with jet engines at Bruntingthorpe were Lancaster II LL735 which was operated by Power Jets, and Lancaster III ND784/G operated by Armstrong Siddeley – Power Jets didn’t arrive until September ’44, and Armstrong Siddeley started their testing programme in June ’45 – as well as those two, there was also a Halifax VII RG817 operated there for a short while by Power Jets, apart from two Wellingtons used by Power Jets that’s all of the testbeds for the jet engines (unless you count the four Meteor’s)

Was thinking when looking at it on Wednesday, does the large white bit at the front come off/down/across? Of course they still have to get the Belfast, Hastings etc into that end, and they’d have a hard job getting them up the other end and then through the building past the V Bombers etc – also, anyone know what the lighting will be like in there? Hopefully it’ll be good as the other hangars at Cosford

She is, and the ‘ghastly red bull colour scheme’ is the thing that’s keeping her in the air, where she belongs, instead of being another static Sea Vixen

East Midlands Airport was opened over 40 years ago on the site of the Castle Donnington airfield and even today people up there refer to EM as Castle Donnington, certainly my old man used to and so does my brother.

Which is now known as Nottingham East Midlands Airport, despite the fact it’s in Leicestershire!

Cheers for the pics, great to see pics from museums, especially ones i’m not likely to visit for a while. Good to hear they have an entrance building, last time I was there the toilet, shop, entrance etc were housed in a shipping container

They were Thompson refuellers, Shuttleworth has the early type, the WW2 version can be seen at Hendon and Duxford, i’ve attached a pic of the one at Hendon – Brooklands recently got an early pre-war one as well, there’s a photo of an early one refuelling a Tiger Moth at Desford aerodrome in the book Leicestershire and Rutland airfields

Surely you’ve heard of the legendary Chinese Stirling before? Actually don’t think I know how the joke started off come to think of it, anyone?

Maybe it’s short for ‘flied lice’, aimed at the oriental market, who will no doubt be craving for food that combines both what they eat at home and traditional english food after bringing the Stirling back from China

Where would it go? It’d take up a lot of hangar space and in the existing hangars you probably wouldn’t be able to see much of it wherever they put it, so it would probably just go outside and rot

Found out today that a mate of my uncle was ground crew in the RAF and worked on Vulcans and is now working full time on 558, i’ll try and find out through him what’s going on, i’d imagine he’s pretty well informed
