It needs to be open by 0600 local because those aircraft already in the air depend on bothrunways being open to accept arriving aircraft from 0600 to 0700. If only one runway was open after 0600 then the inbound delay would rapidly climb past 30 minutes which would lead to cancellations and diversions out.

I loked at the prints in the tower just now and they are all from Hunting Aerofilms. Looking at Wikipedia it seems to suggest that the archive of aerial shots of Britain is available at the National Monuments Record in Swindon.

There is a series of five aerial photos in the tower atrium from various dates between 1949-1998, so the photos exist somewhere.

09R is straight ahead to 3000ft.
09L is climb to 3000ft, and turn left to track 040 on passing 1500ft (or threshold, whichever is later),
27R is climb to 3000ft, and turn right to track 310 on passing 1500ft (or the threshold……….),

27L is climb to 2000ft, turn left to track 150 on passing 1000ft (or the threshold…….).

When TOGA is applied, many types have problems not climbing past 2000ft.

Don’t know to be honest what other airfields have as their GA rate, I’d imagine Gatwick would have a similar circa 1% GA rate.

what do the ATC/Airline crews think about it?

I’m not what you’re asking here really, we (Heathrow ATC) don’t think there’s anything particularly special about it. At any airfield you are always going to have non-nominal events, and yes I guess somewhere which is capacity constrained you’re probably more likely to encounter such events.

The only think I’ve ever heard flight crews talk about regarding go arounds at LHR is the fact that the 27L standard missed approach procedure can be interesting to fly!

We tend to have between 30-40 go arounds per month on average. Probably 80 to 90% of those will be ATC initiated.

…..and you don’t actually need A-Levels to become an ATCO.

Would be interesting to find out where they got that salary from.

AFAIK only one Spanish ATCO got that much. There is a lot of disinformation flying about on this subject.

The vast majority of them get nowhere near that amount.. Yes, they compare favourably to the rest of Europe, but I certainly wouldn’t like to be in their shoes now with only three or four days off a month and split shifts (doing 2200-0700 night shift, then back in at 1400 that same day until 2200).

Hopefully this current situation will result in legal working time limits such as we have for ATCOs in this country.

    Oh dear me.

EGPH do you have any idea what working in a safety critical industry is actually about?

    1L,

If you pull up to a T junction to turn left, where you need to ‘give way to’ traffic, and there’s a car doing 30mph 500m to your right, do you stay where you are and wait, or do you judge that you can pull out and accelerate to normal speed without causing any hazard to the approaching car because it’s so far away?

Or crossing oncoming traffic to turn right?….Do you wait until you cannot see any oncoming cars at all, even though you have good visibility ahead? Yes, you must ‘give way to’ oncoming traffic, but that means you make a judgement as to when it’s safe to cross and go, not just wait for every car to pass you no matter how far away it is.

This issue has been debated at, I would imagine, every busy airport control tower in the country.

The concern is that ‘give way to’ could be interpreted to mean: “If you think you have enough room to pull out in front of the other aircraft, go ahead” as it does on the road.

Yes, I was in the tower at the time, I’d just transferred the UAE4 to Air Departures. Flight crew informed us of a security issue; they took it seriously, we took it seriously, and we attempted to ensure as good an outcome as possible for the greatest number of people.

    I didn’t slag anyone off.

Please do let me know what any one of you would do if you were an air traffic controller and a pilot of an aircraft carrying 300 passengers tells you that there’s someone down the back who is threatening the safety of the aircraft…..

Yeah, I’m sure you’d all sit back, put your feet up and assume it was a hoax. 😎

The goon squads justifying their existence …

Yet again someone who wasn’t there basing assumptions on news reports.

Thankfully those of us involved took it seriously.

    Where’s the report?

A lot of assumptions here, and “it’s reported that……”
