Thanks for the update, Runway06. I was also tempted to make the journey from Wales but drank too much with Sunday lunch and had to abandon my car on the mean streets of LLandaff, so no stupidly early start. Hopefully Old Sarum will be better. Only a fortnight to wait.
Thanks Terry, PM sent.
That’s a challenge, Smirky. It looks right so far, but there is a lot hidden behind stuff! Are the side panel outside edges straight, or contoured to the fuselage? There’s no beating testing it out in cardboard first. Saves so much trouble later. I wonder how many Brigand control yokes are around? It’s an impressive lump.
They look great together. Well worth the investment. The panel looks immaculate!
Seahawk rig
Work is progressing on the Seahawk rig, with a little more kitchen being lost to a side console extension for fuel controls. The seat now has a headrest and apron. I’d like to get the gun sight lit up, could anyone advise on sourcing bulb types (there are none fitted), and which pins do what on the plug? I’ve raided my aunt’s collection of vintage bike cables to attempt range control between throttle grip and sight. A pleasing return after years of her disassembling aircraft parts for use on her bikes.
As aeronut says, spinny thing from the back of a tractor.
A quick upside down peer at the Seahawk stick shows it’s an AC 10664 casting, although a bit indistinct. Certainly looks the same. I did the same with a Canberra ‘fighter’ grip and bought a bare yoke to stick it to. It came covered with a thick protective surface which even boiling couldn’t remove. On the Canberra front, this was worth an early drive to the Newark jumble:
Very nice stuff! Your B50 yoke really is a treat, Swifter. The personal connection makes the Herc yoke, Martyn. I must find my Air Cadet log book, just in case the Andover I had a go in with the ATC is the one I flew with cider at Glastonbury!
The triggerless grip could be a back seater/instructor. I’ve got a pair of Mig21 UMs, one triggered, one not. I’ll check my Seahawk grip for cast numbers tomorrow when the light is better.
On the acquisitions front, here’s a very agricultural spade grip from a Polikarpov R5. It needs a good soak in Deox C, but is still sound. Next, an Eastern European column which was a long term mystery until Martyn i.d it as from a Polish Iryda trainer. Also a couple of mystery helicopter cyclics. One is Bell 206/Jetranger but unlike anything in photos and dated 1967.
Click on the Cheffins link in post #6 then the ibidder link on the left. Interesting reading!
Yes please TwinOtter, I’ll be on stall 46 with my back to the Gnat. The joystick is already spoken for but the rest, and more, will be available. This is almost a virtual jumble. A pity you can’t make it Bill, hopefully you can be reintroduced to your Seahawk bits at the Fest.
On the disposals front, this is some of Saturday’s Newark Jumble stall, caught whilst it was still light this evening. Lots of nearlies and duplicates from Sabre and Cobra panels, a US Navy autopilot joystick and gyropilot control from a DC3/ Electra/ Hudson etc.
The side consoles are from a Super Sabre and could include a throttle box for the right swap!
Looking forward to Saturday already…
It’s similar to a blast tube from one of the wing guns, although I think they are heavier grade stainless steel.
Steps are a good start. How will you get higher up without them!
A bit more progress on the Cobra panel, with knobs and switches on the made up weapons panels and a selection of eyebrow and pillar lights. The artificial horizon helpfully has the aircraft type (Bell 209) marked. Next is a stand for the gunner’s panel.
It should be a good one, Tony. Looking forward to the Disney display! I’m hoping to bring the Sea Hawk assemblage and some sticks and panels. There could also be a Vietnam theme.
In the second batch of photos, I think the first item is a corner of the radio racking. The round profile is the base of the spring. The numbering on the first piece looks like nothing I’ve seen on a Spit. Intriguing!
Googling shows the first piece to be the tuning dial from the radio. http://spitfirespares.co.uk/radio.html
