Now that really is lovely! I had a much mankier AC10300 but caved in, sanded it down and resprayed it. Came out all right and it wasn’t exactly touching up the Mona Lisa. (or should that be re touching:))
That really is a special thing Biggles, a lovely assemblage! The Tuck signature does it no harm at all either. The American Eagle looks very streamlined for 1928, another one I’ve never heard of. Nice Wyvern stick Rob, the beauty of the ‘standard’ types is that it could be from whichever you fancy.Have you ever seen a column to go with it?
🙂
Yes, GR3 Tony. They were fitting them at St Athan when I took a school party. Had to ask what was happening to the old stick tops after they had been replaced but none came my way, unsurprisingly. There are a couple of lumps of Jag still decorating my classroom though including a big titanium shield they very kindly passed on.
I bought this grip as Jag, the vendor saying he worked on them. He later sold me the column which he claimed it came with. The overall shape, and particularly the knuckle don’t look Jag at all and in a previous post here it was decided as Mirage III. Slightly disappointing but does mean my ‘Falklands’ collection is coming together.
I feel your pain Tony, my ebay watched history is a catalogue of things which could have been. That said, I can eat, pay the mortgage and haven’t been thrown into debtor’s prison so it was probably for the best. Did a swap to get this Jag grip which cheers me. interesting ergonomics, lots of buttons and now, regrettably, ‘historic’.
I’ve also got no idea with your second grip, Martyn. Your F4D stick was a surprise, the handle looking long even without being extended. Douglas really boxed it in in the cockpit. I can see why you were confused!
The F4D cockpit shot shows the same trim hat as my Maybad Electric grip, hence I hoped it might be. It’s a bit of a guess but sufficient to start on my Airfix Skyray to sit next to it. Keep them coming!
Interesting that one Lanc wheel is for a second pilot. Can’t be many of them around.
PM sent!
Nice photos there, thanks for posting. The extra leverage stick must have been a Douglas patent or was it used elsewhere? No doubt about the id of yours Martyn, very nice! Well done for starting the new thread Tony, look forward to seeing it fill up.
A top idea Tony, a stick grip pic thread! I’m a learner but enjoying finding my way through. Have a Skyraider/Skyray query to kick it off.
Got this Maybad Electric grip a while ago as from a Skyraider. I’ve not found a pic of the odd trim switch on a Skyraider, but have found one photo online in a Skyray. Might have to take a walk to Ian Allan to flick through their library. Can’t see any part numbers, any ideas?
Here’s a pic from from the Osprey ‘production line to frontline’ series. An early RAF Mustang with some British equipment and an odd looking spade grip, I think it’s been discussed before. Later P51s certainly had B3 grips as the field where many were scrapped has the odd piece still lying around.
Same here Tony!
Sounds a nice selection of grippy bits Tony. Clearly worth the trip!
Now that’s clever! There is a site (mentioned here?) with ‘then and now’ bomb damage ghosted together. Very effective way of bringing back history.
Here’s a then and now of RAF Llandow, around 1947. A sad sight. The lump is Albermarle, although I couldn’t see any in the photo.
It was a direct copy of the British version, I think only the label being different. Unfortunately I sold one a year or so ago for a lot less than I’d hoped and certainly less than this. http://aviation-antiques.com/store/item_view.asp?estore_itemid=1001107
Will still look the part mounted in front of your armoured glass. Some FAA Corsairs came with US gun sights so I would imagine Tarpons did also.
